  1. It's been a while! I can't remember what service I used to use to find small-ads when I was in Thailand - was it Gumtree? Backpage? Locanto? I can't remember! Anyway I think Backpage got shut down, right?

What do people use these days?

    Thanks.

  2. Hi folks, OK, so... I have been here on SETV - 2 months plus 30 day extension.

Will all expire end of this month approx.

Need to leave Kingdom and go to another country and apply for a whole new visa.

Not same as old days with triple entry and border crossing.

So........... quick Q - best, nearest country to do that? British, 40. Passport does have a years worth of border crossing but from 2 or 3 years ago.

Only planned to be here 6 months in total but it might be longer due to year contract on condo so might have to do the SETV again and again.

    What's the latest?

    Thanks.

  3. So this other Thai guy that tried to rape a foreign girl, causing her to jump off a 45 meter cliff to escape, breaking her back, then having him slide down the rock-face after her so he could finish his two hour rape scenario, leaving her to die there, with snakes crawling on her in the dark.... he gets 10 years.

But our Aussie boy DJ here who had a few farging Es for sale to clubbers (who ** newsflash! ** like Es! ) gets two life sentences?

Nice one Thailand justice system - really got your farging head screwed on properly there.

Es ARE farging HARMLESS - forget about it!

  4. My wife purchased some gold chain from Chiang Mai's leading gold shop. When she tried to sell it in the US we took it to a gold shop in our local Chinatown where the owner convincingly demonstrated to me that it was heavy gold plate. He then proceeded to replate the chain in front of our eyes to make it look new again. The wife did eventually take the chain back to the original gold shop in Chiang Mai where they did buy it back at that day's listed price with no questions asked. I had a gold ring purchased from the same shop. When I took it to a jeweler in the US to get resized the jeweler refused based on past experiences with Thai gold rings not being the solid baat gold as claimed. So your mileage may vary. There may now be some reputable gold shops in Bangkok catering to the elite. But I would not trust your typical red and gold colored Chinese gold shop in Thailand as far as I can spit. The only redeeming feature is that once they have scammed you they are willing to buy back the piece. So even the fake Thai gold pieces do have some investment value if retained and sold in Thailand when the price of gold increases.

Some of the older Chinese gold shops in Chinatown have been there since 1880 - I doubt they would have lasted that long selling fake gold nor would they risk their reputation and success by beginning now!

  5. Hello...you seem to know a lot more about this topic than I...so I'll just make a comment to anyone reading this thread...when I first visited here, a few years ago, I bought a few items at MBK and some more at vendors in BKK...out of 7 pieces, only 1 proved to be genuine gold...the rest were plated, but sold as solid gold...so if you are just visiting and wish to take something home with you, I wouldn't...if you reside here, at least you can file a police report if you are cheated...

Obviously buying gold from MBK would be a mistake, it is a tourist trap.

  6. OK thanks guys - I will do as suggested and print out the photo - it does look like very fine work indeed - I fancy a dragon (my Chinese year) so this piece is appealing.

I also need some 1mm thick gold snake chain - in the UK I was looking at paying £415 per inch (approx 10 grams per inch) including the 20% VAT but it would also mean a further 10% commission to the jewelers at the end.

And that is for 18K gold, aka, only 75% pure!

So Thailand seems far more appealing with 23K gold.

And I bet the commission is lower - and they probably don't have VAT on gold (but I could be wrong there)

I shall try Hua Seng Heng and Tang To Kang in Chinatown.

    See what that turns up....

    Thanks.

  7. So.... I'm thinking - is the METV even worth it? With a single entry, I'd get 60 days, extendable by 30 if immigration OK it. That's 3 months. Then I could fly out to say Manila - stay for a few days, check it out, get another SETV, so another 60 days plus extension again by 30 days if need be. That's 6 months taken care of. I would have to leave Thailand and re-enter anyway with the METV so not much difference, and more than half the cost of the METV (not that that is an issue really)

But certainly easier up-front that trying to jump through all the retarded hoops for the METV

    What say ye?

Did you say how long you plan to stay in Thailand? If it is for 6 months and you´re happy to apply for a second SETV in the area than I´d say that this is probably the easiest way of staying 6 months in the country. The advantage of the METV is that, if timed perfectly, you could almost stay for 9 months and whilst you still have to do the border runs with the METV it saves you time (if that is an issue) by not having to stay in another country whilst you apply and wait for another SETV to be issued.

But reading how "painful" the Embassy in London makes the process of applying for the METV I personally wouldn´t bother either and go for an SETV instead.

Right - have been granted the SETV from London which was so much easier than the METV - just fill in the form and they give it you the next day. No proof of anything else needed.

This gives me two months on arrival, then a month extension. At that point I can fly to Manila for example and have a look around, then apply there for another 60 day SETV and rinse and repeat.

Even with a METV, I would still have had to leave the country anyway, only difference is I could have come back without getting a new visa. Big deal. I'll just have a week long holiday somewhere.

    Sorted!

Just do your research before again, some places in the region don't give SETV's as easy as you got yours, requirements differ.

Not sure Manila is on the friendly list.

Ah OK - good point. Thanks.

  8. Chinatown is whete you need to start browsing.

Thanks - do you think they might have stuff of that quality? Of course, I can also try River City antiques - they may have some gold sellers there too.

Any other markets or regions of Thailand I am missing?

    Thanks.

  9. Hey

So I've been reading about gold jewelry in Thailand and it seems a great place to buy due to the purity of gold and the small commission.

I've heard Chinatown is the best place - but I'm wondering - is it just plain chains and rings down there or do they carry very fine, artistic works in gold?

I found this bracelet searching around Google - I would love to buy something as intricate and fine as this - does anyone know where I should begin my search?

    Thanks.

  11. ..so sad, so pathetic. and right in plain view.

why did it take so long?

Especially sad for sucker tourists...who believed this was a sacred, religious thing....a special place for animals and humans to coexist.

Instead....drugged tigers and a highly profitable trade of protected species on international markets.

With China being the main consumer.

What in the ell is the matter with Asian people. They still believe in goofy traditions about bear paws, tiger penis and such. Witchcraft?

    Evil? or just Dumb?

Just dumb and superstitious - despite the overwhelming proof of Western medicine some still don't "believe" in it.

But Westerners can be just as dumb - the tiger sanctuary in point, not to mention idiot women going off to Indian ashrams to receive "healing full body massages" from "gurus"... yeah right!

Paying some horny man to touch them up and call it a spiritual experience... call it what it is.

    Hi DUS

I think you're right - it's probably far easier. Yes, 6 months max this time for me, then I'm going to try out Manila, never been to the Phils before. However, I was planning to rent a condo for those 6 months in BKK - not sure how kindly Thai landlords will take to me only having a SETV - they might think I'm going to do a runner after 60 days - I can see it from their perspective.

    Hmm.....

  14. Me again! Been 2 years since I was last on here... now planning a trip back to LOS and all has changed!

So I got sent away from the London embassy for not having all the docs (even tough they weren't all mentioned on the slip you print off with the application form)

Anyway... I told her I've just finished my work contract and she said that wouldn't do, I need a letter saying I'll be going back to work in 6 months (anyone work for such a lenient employer? No? I didn't think so!)

So, scrap that plan. It just so happens I also do freelance work so have an SA form for 2014-15 and a request letter to do my return for 2015-16.

BUT... I am not a registered company - never needed to be.

So will my SA forms but no company reg suffice?

My bank statement looks wild and fluctuates crazily! But it just so happens that I came into a large-ish inheritance, hence the desire for medium-long term traveling.

I hope this works - that account is above £5,000 last year, then up higher, then down to zero, then huge lump sum, then chopped in half... looks insane!

She also told me...... I don't even need a ticket, just an "itinerary" whatever that means. ie, a print out saying I would "like" to fly with this airline on this date.

At least that's how she made it sound.

Good ol' Thailand... always bungling things up!

    :P

  15. Every Iranian I have ever met has been highly intelligent and highly cultured, way more than your typical Westerner. The Pentagon already has them on the list for invasion, after a few other countries are done first.

It's a real shame - they will paint anyone to be the bad guy (apart from themselves of course) if it suits their political and energy requirements.
