  1. Lunch there today for the first time.. the place was empty despite the rave reviews from posers here. The 200 grams of NZ rib eye beef, with cheddar, English bacon and fried egg was superb. The side of fries, 30 baht extra were good but very small portion. No beer sold but available at Rimping a few doors down. The burger costs 300 baht - not inexpensive but worth it if you have a craving for an amazing burger.

I would rather have 3x upsized KFC complete meals (inc jumbo fries and jumbo pepsi).

Your 300bht was just for the burger, what was the total for 1 meal inc drinks?

Burger with all the toppings: 300 baht

    Home fries: 30 baht

    Water: 15 baht

Tip: 100 baht (they were very nice)

    Total: 445 baht

This is the most expensive burger on the menu but it is made with ground NZ rib eye... the next one down is 130 grams of Thai beef - can't remember price... and that's it for beef burgers... the others are chicken or veggie options.

  3. CHIANG MAI, 23 January 2014 (NNT) – The intense high pressure cell covering upper Thailand has caused frost to return in many areas of the North and Northeast, where temperatures have dropped to near zero.

The mercury hit 0 degrees Celsius on Doi Inthanon peak in Chiang Mai on Wednesday morning. The temperature right above the ground reached an annual low of minus 4 degrees Celsius, triggering widespread frost that fascinated the tourists who visited the peak on Wednesday. Wednesday's frost on Doi In thanon was reportedly the most intense in years.

  4. Oh please, not another on-line article on this subject! Yes, we all agree -- you CAN live here on $500 a month. But SHOULD you be here if your ONLY source of income is $500 a month and you have no savings or backup plan? Absolutely Not! Especially if you're retired. Yet these articles target the elderly -- the very people who should stay in their home countries where they have access to social services to assist elderly low-income folks. The programs here to assist elderly low income barely exist for Thai people and are non-existent for elderly low income foreigners.

Yet these people still keep a-coming. No-No-No. Sigh -- I'm off to write yet another strongly worded email to Kathleen Peddicord, the author of this article. She makes her living selling books, newsletters and seminars to eager low-income wanna-be retirees. I wish I could contact her the next time a 84-year old resident foreigner turns up at Suan Dok hospital with a broken hip, unable to pay for the care, totally disoriented because of dementia. Maybe she'd like to come and help the poor guy get his life back on track. After all he came here because he read one of her books about how great it is to retire in Chiang Mai!

Nancy, comments like yours are hopefully read by those who begin their search based on articles like this one. More information and personal feedback can help those contemplating a move here or other foreign destinations.

  6. I was there last week and its amazing how different my experience was. I got the girl with the short hair.

Show up at 13:00 and showed her my paperwork. She then said I had to return the following day at 7:00am. The place was half empty and I asked if something could be done that day. NO !

Returned the following day at 6:45am, in line for 45 minutes then handed a laminated card with number 49 on it. Waited for 40 minutes for my number to be called and then the girl at the information desk looked at my papers and stapled number 245 on it and told me to return after 13:30.

Back again and waited, finally number called, paperwork processed and waited another 45 minutes for my passport and receipt.

Its not as efficient as others who have been luckier claim to be. Just saying.

  7. Air quality report on Chiang Mai from US State Department:

In Chiang Mai and other areas of northern Thailand, poor air quality might pose a health threat during the dry season, from March until June. Smoke and particulate matter from agricultural burning can irritate eyes and respiratory systems and worsen heart and respiratory diseases.

During this period, you should be aware of the local Air Quality Index (AQI) and take appropriate measures to minimize the impact on your health. The Thai government’s Pollution Control Department calculates the AQI daily and posts measurements online. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains AQI on its website, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends what to do during periods of poor air quality.
