  1. What I did not know is that CMU has a website which links a number of old black and white Chiang Mai images.

    They are downloadable.

I will take time to go through all of them, and here is a sampling of 5 which might strike your fancy:

    BS-CM-WF006b.jpg

This is, of course, Miss Universe, 1965.

    picbig-121022150044.jpg

Here you have your typical hard studying CMU students, and smart too. No Date But I guess 1974

    BS-CM-WF001b.jpg

    1965 Winter Fair Beauty Contest

    BS-CM-SK007b.jpg

Here 1953, and Songkran in Chiang Mai. This one is interesting.

Most are not really interesting to put on a wall and stare at.

That is what I am looking for.

I am sure I will find what I am looking for with your help.

Probably someone at the University knows just where to look, in fact.

I guess most people are so obsessed with the future, and the Nexus 7.2, that they don't have time for these old shots?

    Not necessarily.

I want a Nexus 7.2, with its higher resolution,

So that I can load and view images like these, only better ones.

    Happy Viewing.

    And please contribute.

    Thanks.

  2. you can use : reason, logic or samplitude. it is a bit of an overkill i have to admit. or or simply go to your control panel and use the sound/propery/soundcheck option.biggrin.png

    1. The sound check option does not show a problem, although there is a problem.

    2. If MAGIX Samplitude can detect and diagnose speaker problems or other things that cause improper sound output, then I do not care if it is overkill. I will try it if I can download it on a trial basis.

    Thanks.

  3. Oldchina; you paint a lovely picture of where you are now….infact it reminded me of this “If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you're already dead!” (Gladiator 2000)

We have all been trying to find Elysium in Chiang Mai and you have found it pretty fast…care to share?...or you are dead already?

Not an expert on photography by any means, but to get high resolution old photos before the advent of the digital era to me sounds impossible. The old pin hole/box brownie camera photo rated at 1 pixel, with the future on the horizon…the sodium flashbulb surely cannot reproduce as you would wish.

I would think however that many of the graphic/sign design shops have the cd with photoshop images of every conceivable subject and already in high resolution. Many would be free, but you can also try the internet like “shutterstock” they sell high resolution images for you to reproduce yourself.

You can do a search for the subject material, and see if the price is royalty free or a fee to pay and then simply transfer them to a memory stick and take them to a printer to print out on whatever material you prefer, photo paper, vinyl, glass.

Personally though, whilst black and white is quite an authentic medium to present, I would just try to see them in sepia as they would add a further dimension and warmth to a room.

    good luck with the search.

While I always thank you for any of your good comments directed my way, you would be very much mistaken if you believed that there were no high resolution imagery before the digital age. I cannot say about your thinking that I might be dead already because I do not think we have reached a consensus regarding this minor point. Yes, it is true that I happened upon a beautiful spot, and it was only a matter of luck. I am very fortunate, I know.

One of the best black and white imagery collections of the past is surely Frank Hurley's many beautiful crystal clear high resolution Endurance images using glass plates before WW2. I will post one here so that you can see just how fine it truly is. There is a whole collection of Hurley images, and you sometimes need to pay to see them.

The Chiang Mai photos I am looking for do not need to be this high resolution or done in such a professional manner. Sometimes the ones that are not planned or are not without their faults are more interesting. Many of the older photos actually can be enlarged quite a bit. Thank you, too, for all the information regarding imagery and photography. (I would not be a bit surprised if you already know of Frank Hurley's work. I just like this chance to see it again and share it with you, so that people can see what amazing images were possible in the 1930s.)

    Happy viewing:

  4. Hi,

I moved into a very nice place about 2 months ago. I cannot think of another accommodation which might suit me more. It's beautiful and not big and it has jungle and is quiet and has nice people and is close to where I need to go and the food is good in the vicinity and there are no longer any jetliners flying 1000 feet overhead and so far no loud super low frequency bass penetrating my walls like they were transparent to sound, which they are to very low frequency bass.

The only problem I have now is that the walls are bare.

Where can I get some images to blow up of Chiang Mai in the 20s onward? (1920 through 1985 OR 2473 through 2538)

I want Black and White, no color.

Anything really interesting showing the landscape and the buildings, the houses and the people.

Rice field I will take if they are where Chiang Mai is now, and I don't know if anyone ever grew rice here in the first place.

They must be fairly high resolution because I want to make prints which are suitable for hanging.

I suppose I would enlarge the image to a print the size of maximum one meter, but more likely 0,5 meters square, or something.

Also, where do you go in Chiang Mai to do high quality scanning of old photos?

Where do I make prints in Chiang Mai at the most competitive price?

To me, the old black and white images of cities and neighborhoods showing people, and sometimes important events are both fascinating and beautiful.

I just want to put them on my wall so I can stare at them sometimes.

I never stare at my walls though,

When I have TVF always here by me.

  5. Me tinks you have a dragon fruit fetish no?

I've never tried it but I shall keep it in mind. As long as it's not like durian that is. Yuk.

    I was truly a fool,

Not to try Gao Mung Gawn the minute I stepped off the plane in Chiang Mai!

Think of all the days wasted.

I think the only thing I would change about this fruit is to make it slightly harder, or firmer, when you bite into it.

The seeds should be just a hair crunchier.

And I would choose a bit more tartness.

It is just juicy enough without being too juicy.

And I like it deep red which reminds me of some things I've seen since I lost my virginity.

Then, of course, you cannot really eat a Gao Mung Gawn without thinking of the beautiful women and girls of 20 around here,

Who are just as luscious and brainy as this Gao Mung Gawn is beautiful and seductive.

Recall that Rousseau liked his Tahiti, and now I know what it was that he liked.

The fruit, the jungle, the beautiful women, that all seem to flow together and overcome the senses until we old guys are swooning from over stimulation.

I would I were another painter or something so that I could have a groupie following and just paint beautiful things with and without their civilizing skins.

To me, the biting into a red Gao Mung Gawn is the same as the anticipation I feel when tasting the taste I see everywhere everyday.

Yes, I was a fool not to arrive here much sooner when I could have done far more tasting, and much more drooling.

  6. The thing I want to know SinglePot,

Why do you keep getting in so late at night when arriving in BeiJing?

I don't think it is as bad as you say, unless you go out of your way to ride with goons.

Maybe you were interviewing one of them when the interview suddenly went sour?

If you speak Chinese though, then usually you can get a pretty good idea what people are like when in Beijing,

And I never ride with thugs there, or in the Bronx.

How do you choose your taxis?

Do you choose the ones who rush up begging for you to ride in their cars?

I know how to choose a taxi in China, and so I have not had many difficulties after a few bad rides 35 years ago before I knew better.

Taxi drivers, honestly, are usually very friendly to me because I sincerely do enjoy listening to them talk about whatever it is that they like to talk about.

Sometime in the past, I would stop halfway home and ask them to join me for a beer, or a meal of noodles.

I have become friends with a few and I still carry their cards after quite a few years.

Maybe they do not like foreigners who treat them like crap, or ones who don't much like them.

    This is my surmise,

    In your case.

  7. Perhaps the Chinese don't have the recent experience of political upheaval that the Russian Empire had. So long as the emperor is far away, I don't think they care whether he wears a denim shirt or a silk robe.

    SC

Putin never wears a shirt when astride his white stallion.

    Every woman adores a Fascist,

The boot in the face, the brute

Brute heart of a brute like you.

― Sylvia Plath, Ariel: The Restored Edition

The man of literature, OCH, will probably know that Sylvia was married to Poet Laureate Ted Hughes, and committed suicide.

Have not read his poetry, but with his lovers dropping like flies, he must have been much like Putin in many ways.

    Putin is a poet, too.

All Russians have poetry, its in their blood.

I am not, though, a man of letters.

  8. Old China hand if you want to talk about it get it right. The GI bar scene was much more like the Ayutthaya bar scene and governed by a set of rule and regulations where both parties had rights and obligations. No go go bars then.

You are talking about the Euro trash bar scene with go go bars that was started after the GI's left post 1975.

    Well maybe, if you insist.

But, also, were you here in the late 60s, and very early 70s?

  9. Thailand always had the bar scene. Check the location of the brothels when the capital was Ayutthaya. It was always a part of Thai culture.

PS Saigon tried to get rid of the gambling and working girls and they ended up loosing the war. Are Kings Cross and Soho that bad? I like Vegas and Reno.

Cheap entertainment and diversion for the proles, is Vegas and Reno.

Thailand has not always had the bar scene, but was introduced to it in the 60s by GIs, and the crowd of misfits who catered to them.

GIs don't know what to do for a good time usually, so they just follow their swinging ones, as usual.

"The brothels of Ayutthaya and the women who worked in them are not topics that usually appear in history books describing the ancient capital of Siam. But noted anthropologist Srisakara Vallibhotama feels their presence and interaction in the communities more than 400 years ago says much about the people and the way of life in the old capital."

    http://www.nationmultimedia.com/home/Leisure-The-ladies-of-Ayutthaya-20001108.html

No not the 1960's but don't feel bad you only missed it by 400 years.

I know the history of the bar scene in Thailand having read about it, and also seen it once or twice in the distant past during the time it was new to Thailand.

The bar scene I refer to is that which marked a significant Thai cultural addition and change beginning in the 60s, with the influx of US GIs, and which continued on after the GIs left.

We do not, and Thailand does not, need the GIs' cultural remnants hanging on here any longer.

Thailand was not known as a sex tourism destination until just around the time the GIs left.

Foreign workers from the US and Europe came in to fill the void left by the GIs, as well.

None of it helps the economy or the social order or the culture here.

The economic growth that the sex tourism provides can be easily replaced in other better ways.

  11. After thinking it over while out in the desert for 40 days and 40 nights,

Now I wish to say that yesterday I did some walking around looking for a good hose,

Longer and not quite so stiff.

These shops seem to be selling the same brand I have.

And since someone here said that I am spending too much time in cheap hotels, but not short time hotels,

What brand is suggested which will not do what this hose does to me every morning?

The Taiwan hoses are far better.

Never had any problem with the hoses there.

But why spend the effort to find a Taiwan hose in Thailand if I can just find a better Thailand hose?

    Any ideas?

  12. Get the gift ... ASAP.

Hmm.....she's away in the huff. MG is away to America for two months next weekend and I'll be in Scotland for a couple of months starting October 3rd. The ships have passed in the night, such is life.

I'm away to update the "Battle of my Life" thread.

Hope the manuscript has a good outcome.

  14. Does anyone recall last time they took one of those Stress Tab 600 mg Vitamin C and B complex vitamin supplements?

Sometimes they use a dye which turns your urine dark orange.

Where do that come from, the dye I mean?

I am thinking that whoever puts the dye on the stresstabs might also be using the same thing inside the dragonfruit.

I mean, it seems to turn your urine dark orange, or something.

    Maybe not.

Maybe it is just concentrated after dehydration from walking in Death Valley along not Thanoon Suthep, but along some other major highway trying to find the wrong gate at the University.

Now though, looking at this luscious fruit in red,

I have not much time to worry about Ps.

  15. SC....

I made 400% one night at Happy Valley

I have never once been to Happy Valley,

And this is something I regret, that I did not go in early 1980s.

Also, I thought they had moved it.

Everything else in HK, I tried more than once.

I prefer Shatin, though I was never so fortunate there. I am thinking of stopping off for a day at the races on my way back from Vienna

    Whitisthatsupposedtaemeen?

My apologies for the Off-Topic digression

    SC

I would far prefer to see the bar scene leave Thailand,

And just have the bars and horse racing come in.

I mean the high class bars and any class of horse racing, like they used to have in Ireland for example.

This way, if we had more horse racing, it would do wonders by bringing in the wealthy Chinese, and the British to see what other positive changes could be made to benefit Thailand.

Just keep the Thai culture the same is all I ask.

Think what a boost it would be to the Thailand economy if we got rid of the underbellies?

And the underbelly of Thailand's tour industry.

No doubt it would boost travel and tour related income because I am sure there is still much more quick growth that could be had if Thailand were to change its image from one of sex tourism to one of Thai Language Study and Family Time at The Beach.

Every time a city gets rid of gambling and those working girls, all are happy in the end, and the neighborhood improves quickly as the place rapidly gets richer.

  16. Yeah it's sort of like that, but the Chinese national isn't going to go to Afghanistan if it's not an approved destination...

I believe quite awhile ago a few Chinese pros were caught in Afghanistan. Google it.

Human trafficking is a bit different..

    Plenty are going,

To mine metals, and mop up after the Americans have left and things return to normal.

There is much wealth underground in Afghanistan, and the Chinese have plans there,

    And Africa.

They will not last long, the Government of China.

They will come tumbling down any day now, it is written.

Isn't it amazing how long the Government has been able to last? All those of the CCP type in power during and just after WW2 have fallen.

  17. And if there is no throwing of statues and pots allowed what precisely is on the agenda for a discussion about China in a restaurant in Chiang Mai?

    Ming Vases........

Those are a beauty and a marvel to watch and admire

Highly worthwhile time spent to behold those and other such sights.

I've been through many museums (and Buddhist temples) in parts of the PRC and never fail to be amazed or even stunned by some of the beauty of the work done so long ago.

The work of the communists and Marxists is always very ugly.

    Down with the commies.

    Up with the Mings.

    Long live BaiWeiWei,

If they stop hitting him over the head with telephone books.

  18. I love sex.

    So who does not?

It is a God given given that we should all love sex (all but those very rare individuals that do lack the drive)

But I love sex with SMART girls more than anything.

It is just more fun with a smart girl.

I can't stand sex without humor.

Not the ribald cheap humor you might be thinking about, but real dry,

Just like I like my girls real wet when the time is right.

    So, yes.

When I am with a smart girl,

Than the woodpecker is always either at attention thinking of this bird, or is taking a slow deep breath it seems.

Edited by Publicus, 55 minutes ago.

Iowa, USA, is a great town with many educated farmers, who also deal daily millions of dollars of important products in places like China.

The people there are probably less biased by their views than most.

They are open and friendly people.

I am sure that Iowa, UK is just the same,

But they do not deal in corn, except maybe the corn liquor?

And they do not export to Beijing as much as does Iowa USA.

You didn't get it first time round, so here it is again.

I don't come from Iowa, and I don't like Beijing called a liar.

    Freudian.

So wrap up the crap talk about ME.

    I can understand that.

But, as for me, I do not mind being called a liar, just a different point of view probably.

I think I get it though. You do not come from Iowa.

    Got it.

Iowa, USA is a state, not a town or a municipality; neither is it a county.

Iowa is one of the 50 states.

    QUICK!

Name the provinces of China, one after the other!

You can leave your hat on.
