If you haven't fudging noticed, this whole forum is dedicated to Samui, so it's really irrelevant to start complaining about Samui being a shit hole, because then you might as well start posting it in EVERY darn thread here, so you can remind people about it.

It is expensive, yes, partly because it's an island, so everything must be transported from the mainland.

But for us who likes to live here on Samui, price is not that of a major issue. Of course don't we all would like prices to be lower? But we do make enough money for it to be worthwhile to stay here.

It means "go up" and people usually never say just these 2 words, but in some kind of context.

Exactly when do you hear this? In TV or when people speak? Or speak about what? Do they just say that 2 words? Surely they must be saying more than that... By context I mean in what situation do you hear them say that word??

Yeah, lots of Chinese investing and opening things here alright. But many of them, their mentality and attitude stinks.

I had a Chinese/Australian couple staying at a house here and within 3 months, they've managed to piss off the house owner by paying late rent and not keeping up with their words. They were promised special 3 month price, but paid only for 1 month, by dividing that price by 3. Also when I notified them about the late payment, this was our chat long.

When they finally moved out, the owner called me and told me she has never ever been this happy that somebody moved out of her property.

Even the contractors they hired to do renovation work on their business in Chaweng for them despises them. Always paid late, and if they didn't nag about the payments, they wouldn't get paid.

But sooner or later, they'll get bitten and realize that it's not that easy to make good money here on Samui. It's a small island where most families know or are related to each other, so definitely not a good start to make everybody and their brother hate you. They're gonna suck you dry of your money, then spit out your bones off the island with your tails between your legs.

There may be some good money to be made during high season, but that's only December-March + August.

The rest of the year, Chaweng is like a graveyard. Most businesses won't ever make enough to even pay for the rent.

That sentence นี้คือนรกใช่ไหม means "This is hell, right?"

In English, "what the hell" doesn't actually mean "hell" as in where the devil lives.

Your remarks would be almost like cursing them to go to hell.

So you can't translate it word by word into Thai, because in Thai language it doesn't work that way, so when you use the Thai word for "hell" นรก it will always means that place where sinners go after death.

In Thai language this word is very negative.

The reason why nobody else has ever had any "problems" with you when you've said it before is that they don't care and also you're a stranger, so obviously they're not gonna start lecturing you or something. They're just thinking, "stupid farang, cannot speak Thai properly...", or "WHTF is wrong with this farang".

If you want the meaning of "What the hell is this?" in Thai, it'll have to be something like "นี่มันอะไรอีกแล้วเนี่ย" or "นี่มันอะไรเนี่ย" or just "อะไรวะ", this will be like a sarcastic remark. Or if you're among very close friends, one can even use a bit profanity and say "นี่มันเหี้ยอะไรเนี่ย" or "เหี้ยอะไรวะเนี่ย". DO NOT use those 2 last sentenced with your family or strangers! It's meaning in English will be something like "What the phukk is this?"

I can recommend that you don't tattoo such thing on your body. In Thai culture, we don't usually tattoo phrases or words on our body like people do in The West. You'll look like those farangs with those stupid Chinese character tattoos.

If you want to get something genuinely Thai tattoo, get a so called "yantra tattoo". A tattoo master will recommend a suitable design which will be able to enhance your luck or personality in some ways.

If you really like those words that much, just tattoo them in English. Translated into Thai, those words won't have exactly the same meaning or impact. It'll just look goofy with those words tattoo on you.

In Thai language, one single word often can have a slightly different meaning depending on context, so by writing just single words like that it'll just look confusing.

For example "independence" and "freedom" involves with the Thai word อิสระ. But this depends on exactly what you mean with "independence" because if you mean like independent country, it can be เอกราช or อิสรภาพ. But if you mean more like personal independence, then it can be for example เป็นตัวของตัวเอง

"Self reliance" can also be translated to various words depending on exactly what you mean. Is it mentally self-reliance ไว้ใจตัวเอง, or physically like you're some kind of "MacGyver" พึ่งตัวเอง.

As for "freedom", it can be เสรี which may mean more like liberty and อิสระ means like independent.

If you get those words tattooed, a typical Thai would think you're some kind of freedom fighter political lunatic or something like that.

The owners of Sound Club (The Poolsawats) are in need of cash, so they are looking to sell the property. Actually it was their plan all along when they started developing that plot of land, so that they can sell everything off.

Good riddance they finally managed to sell it and close down that Sound Hotel. I had a friend staying there for 1 night and he said it was very mismanaged and run down. Things in the room weren't working and not clean.

Makes me wonder if it's like this on all of the Poolsawat's portfolio.

Yes, I know a DJ who works at Sound Club and a few months ago they were in negotiation with Hard Rock Cafe to sell of their land, looks like the deal went through.

Lamai to Chaweng with taxi, at least 400 one way. It's about 10 km.

Let's hope they'll finish paving it all the way from Chaweng to Nathon. This route has been long overdue for an upgrade.

After coming back from Phuket, these are my thoughts:

Phuket is much bigger and more developed than Samui. Patong reminds me of Pattaya. What a dump. Even Chaweng is like a small village compared to communities in Phuket. In Phuket there are a lot of areas where farangs are virtually non existent, while on Samui, farangs are pretty much spread out all over the island. Prices of things such as food are cheaper in Phuket. Lot more shopping malls. Here in Samui, one has to get off the island to do some serious shopping such as clothes or computer accessories, etc. Samui is much more rustic and laid back. The interior of Samui has unspoilt jungle and one can hike, bike or motorbike on trails or roads in the jungle and hills. Pretty much every beach on Samui has beach front properties, while in Phuket, most properties beside the beach are public land, so no buildings can be erected.

I suggest you ask it this way instead so they may understand you better.
