  1. I've heard anecdotes of case where you are although in in the right, like motorcycle coming down the street on the 'wrong' way and you happened to kill him, police would sometime charge you with manslaughter(to be dropped later),

and often will put down official report of both you and the dead/injured idiot as being equally at fault out of the sympathy for the injured idiot/ surviving family members since your insurance will not pay for hospital bills/funeral cost should the report finds you blameless.

So, when a find an idiot heading towards me in a 'chicken game' I often have an urge to darwin the fvcker by removing him from the gene pool but I remember the above anecdote and the time and paperwork and the run-around is not worth it.

  2. The problem is where they have enforcement of this law, there's no bin to be seen for Kilometres up and down the street, Silom Road opposite Patpong is notorious for this, they usually nab the Thai commuters going to work in the offices around there.

The funny thing is that these boys in brown/green is supposed to only enforce city ordinance yet many of them have guns holstered on their belt. Maybe getting in fight with Somtam vendors can get heated.

  3. This old gentleman in Bangkok was a bicycle racer, he has a workshop just making steel(chro-moly) bicycles and usually tailor-made-to-measure frame and even runs course for people to make their own bikes (link in Thai)

I've seen tandem bicycles in this shop before,

If he can't do it himself, he might be able to get you in touch with many of his apprentice who had leant the craft and has now set up shop around Thailand

  4. Superstar with Cheese from Carl's Jnr.

Portobello Mushroom Burger there is quite good, the price makes it hotel-worthy but that's made up by the view out on the balcony.

For burgers treat, Burger King and the defunct Mos Burger used to do it for me but now it's Carl's Junior everytime. (Heard good things about the Marriott too, but seems like too much of an occasion to go there for a burger)

  5. The quality and freshness at Nang Nual Seafood on walkin street has gone down a bit, but their western style cooking is a guilty pleasure for me, not sophisticated, but the way they au-gratin every dish from Scallops to Lobster/Crayfish with butter, cream and cheap cheese is something you can't get at 'Thai' seafood joint that might have fresher stuff like Preecha in Bang Saray.

By the way, can any of you recommend other Walking street seafood joint that can do 'western' style seafood with sauces and stuff?

I can't take too much chillies, and I especially can't get used to the Thai seafood sauce, often when I go to the seafood restaurants with other people I'm reduced to eating the plain grilled seafood, which although I can taste the freshness, can be bland, the stir fry stuff with Nap Prik Pao is fine, but the grilled stuff that you're supposed to dip with the green chilly dipping sauce thing is beyond me.

  6. If the signal degrades during rain, it could means that your installer hasn't point the dish correctly, they might have pointed it at the general direction and it is good enough in sunny days,

but you could get better signal if they aim the dish properly with a signal meter, or at least one guy checking the level from the set top box and yelling at the guy on the roof

Failing that, bigger dish will improve signals

  7. Whenever something new is trialled on this intersection, the barriers gets removed by the local and normal arrangement resumed by lunchtime

like closing the right turn into and out of Central road from Sukhumvit, in effect, closing the whole intersection and making the whole thing a big roundabout forcing the traffic from the north to make a u-turn at McDonald's,

which seems decent in idea, meaning the queue can be longer without disrupting the traffic flow,

only problem with this arrangement is that it makes the two right lanes on Sukhumvit a slow/waiting lane(Already is) which is counter-intuitive for out-of towners who'd get stuck in right-turn/u-turn traffic, easily solved with clear signposting on the footbridge or a gantry

At least with closed intersection the boys in brown can't mess up the traffic light sequence,

However u-turn traffic have to merge at the mercy of northbound traffic. But thing could get messy as the traffic that's just made a u-turn now have to cut across to the left lane to enter central road.

So to solve that mess, either make a horse-shoe bridge to make a u-turn somewhere between central and south intersection, or why not just make a bridge that right-turn in and out of Central road, probably cheaper than an underpass,

but I'm sure even after the bridge has been completed, the motorcycle horde would make an illegal-u-turn after they have crossed the bridge to come back against the traffic flow to get into the sois opposite central road again.

  8. Posted by Thai at Heart:

@Thai at Heart - I hear companies outside Thailand are falling over themselves to hire people from these universities......

I disagree. Chula, Thamasat, Mahidol are some of the better one in this country. They are one of the top universities in Thailand, including AIT and even ABAC and we have at our office many with degrees from those universities. Would appreciate if you can mention some of those companies.

    "falling over themselves"

I don't think it means what you think it means

    reading comprehension much?

  9. Now is as probably as good a time as any to post this,

    http://www.adecco.co.th/Uploads/Knowledge-Center-Thought-Leadership/Thailand-Salary-Guide/Adecco-Thailand-Salary-Guide-2012.pdf

To the poster who doesnt believe tradesmen earn 3,000 baht per day, take a hike just down the road to you to the O&G industruy, Thais there are earning salaries some farang would envy.

Dont believe me, head to Swampy and see what some of the maintenance staff are on.

For those who can read Thai, salaries for BGs advertised starting from 12/15 k per month.

Last month I was in a hotel, there were 12 vacancies for staff, out and about there were adverts all over the place for staff, pay peanuts you get monkeys, the fish story sums it up.

Very true, even for low-skilled job, I have a young Thai friends who fresh out of university who managed to bag a job at swampy driving trucks filling planes with fuel, the salary was 30K and they are paying 7-9 months bonus on top of that even.

And for factories worker, the employers have have to entice them to work with private health insurance on top of the bonuses as well.

With unemployment lower than 1% jobs like retail/service at minimum wage is not attractive anymore

  10. If they want to keep the left lane 'free' they should put (back) the barriers to prevent traffic from Central road merging too soon, forcing the myriad motorcycles that want to cross to the dark side sois to cut across northbound traffic while the light on Sukhumvit is green to use the u-turn at Soi Siam Country club instead.

Which will proves so popular that the barrier will be taken away and the locals will knows to look out for traffic from Central road that basically want to treat the T-junction as a big-4 way intersection to soi Wat Boon, and the cycles repeats ad-infinitum until the city hall decides to implement an underpass, which is probably the answer that you're going to get, yes, we are aware of the problem, the underpass is coming when the next mayor gets voted in blah, blah blah.

By the way, what would be the best wording to describe the situation of the 'free left lane' for the left turn one taking cue from the American's 'Free left turn' seems appropriate, but for a T junction where the left most lane can ignore the red light, I have never seen this situation in western country? what should the sign say? Left lane ignore red light is probably confusing to put on a traffic sign.

  11. Yeah, but there's also girls who goes to vocational school and get a diploma (Por Vor Sor ป ว ส) and at these school they can stay an extra year and get a proper bachelor's degree. I have staff with these degrees and they ain't worth much, I'd rather hire someone fresh out of hight school (Mor 6)

If a girl from Chula were to lower herself to apply for the same job as the ones with degree from vocational school, they would get the same salary, granted most HR would recognize the prestige and probably not put the girl from Chula in such lowly jobs.

  12. She is lucky she can get a decent job at a respected company without having to pay for it. I know many people who have had to pay to get their jobs. From ฿1,000 for a cashier job at Tesco to ฿60,000 for a teaching job to ฿100,000 to work in a bank.

Sent from my i-mobile IQ 6 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app

That's a guarantee, should you do a runner, The cashier and the bank is understandable, but for a teacher?

  13. It looks like for machines that I've used, the maximum number of notes dispensed in a single transaction 20, if the machine is stocked with 1,000 notes, 20,000, sometimes when they are out of 1,000notes but still have 500baht notes only 20x 500=10,000 notes is given.

I haven't used the coveted machine at homeworks though, seems to be quite unique.

If you're in the area, MaxValue, a supermarket by AEON has just opened in SriRacha, they have plenty of AEON machine there too, just visited them last night

  14. Just avoid the paydays for the Thais (15th and 30/31st) and the queues will be fine, Aeon do loans for things like white goods and the Thais would be in a hurry to put their money on payday. As for the fumbling in front of the machine bits, I suspect the thais who need loans for their toaster or microwave or even mobile phones might be struggling with their reading, so keep that in mind.

  15. I don't think any online mapping service can pinpoint to the house address in Thailand yet

We must have different results, because the only info I got from this search is the following address:

    504/526 Moo 10, Soi 17, 2nd Road, Pattaya City
    Chonburi 20150
    Thailand

Which Google Maps (or even Bing Maps) seems totally incapable to find!

We could not find 504/526 Moo 10, Soi 17, 2nd Road, Pattaya City Chonburi 20150 Thailand
Make sure your search is spelled correctly.
Try adding a city, state, or zip code.

  16. I think some are confusing internet packages for your homes that might come with a router that allows you to use the internet while in you home via wifi with the wifi hotspots that's installed in public places that you can use if you have an account.

For true, look for @truewifi id, if you are lucky enough to live close to the hotspots, you could get by without getting wired connection to your home or a 3G cellular service.

Most 7-11 are now wired with True Wifi, so you could surf the internet while sipping down a few bottles of Leo on the stairs outside, It's no Starbucks, but it might work for you.

The True Wifi hotspot's connection is pretty fast, but can be unreliable depending on how many people're on it, and in my experience, if there's a fault, they are quite slow in getting it fixed, since it's not essential service, and even you phone them up persistently that the wifi hotspot in your street that you've been using for the past month's down they'll never send someone to fix it right away.

Other options for wifi hotspot are available though, there's 3bb which is available to Ais subscribers as well, DTAC has theirs too but only in malls like Central, Sophon does it around town too.

If you're really desperate for cheap internet, you can get a high-gain wifi adapters with huge antennas that will allow you to pull WiFi signals from far away, be it that 7-11 in front of the Soi, or use the unsecured routers of a neighbour's across the Mooban.

  17. The excessive ads on channels like Universal aren't CTH's fault though, if you get the same channels on other service like local cable, it'll be the same. even true do get some ads on some of the pan-asia channels like AXN, I remember some time back the law was that True can't show any ads since they charge customers already, so they have to blank out the foreign ads when it comes on, don't see that as much now.
