  1. Dodgy if you don't qualify for a one year extension for instance, to pay for a stamp which might be false, or might be genuine. A number of years ago, almost all foreigners who resided permanently on a certain island, arranged their visa/entry stamp/extension through "Mr. T" or whatever he called himself. Till one day they were all notified they should go to the Immigration Office in Bangkok to collect their passports.

On the other hand, it can also be that if you qualify for a one year extension, the local immigration office is reluctant to accept applications if not channeled through a certain middleman, who will charge a hefty fee for this.

  2. 2 Years Bangkok, then 6 years Hua Hin, and since 15 years I live in semi rural Khao Lak.

I learned to appreciate the peace and quiet of living in a rural area, and wouldn't want to settle in a city anymore, though I am originally a big city person.

Sometimes I still miss city life though. Maybe the ideal solution would be living in a rural area, but not more than about 50 km from a big town with farang presence like Chiang Mai, Hua Hin, Pattaya or whatever. You have the advantages of living in the countryside, but when you get the urge you can go into the car and drive to town, take a guesthouse room for one night, and go back the next day.

I see that many people who have voted live in the Isaan, and yes, I think it is because they spend a lot of time online

  3. Some of the best travel memories I have, are about arriving somewhere at night, and then seeing how beautiful it was when getting up in the morning. Like after having made a lengthy train/bus journey the previous day, the last part of which, when it was dark already, was going uphill into the mountains.

Had this experience when going to Chiang Mai for the first time. I had arrived in the middle of the night, and the next morning when having breakfast at the flat roof restaurant of the 5 story high guesthouse I had the feeling I was starting a holiday in the Himalayas, seeing the hills all around.

  4. But how do you give them money if you don't know where he is and I don't speak Thai language.

If you learn which jail he is in, you find out who the jailer is, you hand him money. Then you get as much visitation time you want regardless of posted hours, you can bring him anything you want, even have "private" time with him.

If he is in the prison, sorry I don't know anything about that. Only heard that it is a special kind of hell from people who have been there.

What do you mean with "the jailer", is that a prison guard who has responsibility for a certain detainee?

Walk into the station, say "Jail?" to anyone in uniform. They will point you to a desk in the back left corner. The policeman who sits there or who will show up shortly is the jailer, or guard.

The OP stated his friend is in prison, not in a police station holding cell. Nevertheless good info, which I will hopefully never have to use.

  6. Guess they hope people can drink more when the alcohol percentage is brought down.

For me, it is OK. Always liked Chang the best, but at one moment stopped drinking it because of the high percentage, my sessions progressing too fast. Rejoined the Chang church when they brought it down to 6%, and my faith is strengthened now they even watered it down a bit more.

  7. I did altogether years of traveling in the seventies, eighties and nineties.

Changes are not always due to high tech stuff. Too easy now to move from one lonely planet recommended guesthouse to the other, where banana pancake with honey will be on the menu, the place possibly being run by a western ex traveler. The guesthouse selling tickets to the inevitable next destination, minivan picking you up at 07.30, and dropping you off at the doorstep of the next guesthouse.

On another note, a generation of travelers is coming who don't need guide books, taking all their information online. What beats a Whatsapp group of travelers who are in Hanoi right now, you can ask them if it is easy to find a room and which guesthouse is the place to go spot.

  8. Any tour counter in Phuket or Khao Lak will be able to book you on an all included 2 day/1 night tour. From Khao Lak it should cost you about 4300 Baht per person, from Phuket a few hundred Baht more.

Be aware Similan is world famous and thus extremely overcrowded, especially with Chinese. I suggest you look into the Surin Islands as an alternative.
