  1. I am thoroughly unsurprised that US banks would not transfer money this way as international bill pay payees! Too easy!

Remember, SWIFT transfers are big in the news as a prime way Homeland Security is checking on international money transfers. If anything, I expect US restrictions to get even tighter and more difficult in the coming years. More American related info can be found here:

    http://www.retireaway.com/forum

I have another comment. I think Americans planning on retiring in Thailand should consider that it is rather likely that they will have to fly back to the US more than they want to deal with these kinds of problems. You can make the best made plans of mice and men, and then the rules change on you. You kind of have to add these costs when estimating your expat budget.

I have a vision that someday some major national American bank will see the potential of the American expat market and customize their products, services, and marketing for this market. For now, we are too few and out of sight, out of mind. Compare us the expat friendly culture of the UK.

  2. I do think he is a huge suicide risk. He clearly believes the crazy things he says and the world might be bursting his crazy bubble. There will be lots of money made on his story, whether he is savvy enough to get a chunk of it is another matter. That's entertainment.

The only betting I do is in the stock market!

  3. LOL ... yah he'll get jail time!

Protected? Not likely at all! Dahlmer was in PC when he died. The cons won't care that he didn't actually kill JBR they'll kill him based upon what they know about him. Rich? not likely at all!

We shall see. I bet he gets small jail time, doesn't get murdered, and gets rich (I heard there is already a movie deal in the works). There is no law to stop him from profiting from the JB case because he did not commit that crime.

It is a proven fact Americans will pay good money to watch train wrecks.

  4. You are so emotional about this.

He might get some time in jail in Cali, probably likely.

He also will be protected from murder quite well, they have special programs for high profile prisoners.

    And he will get rich.

You see, your method has made him a rich and famous man, which is what he wanted.

My way, you would have never heard of him, and yes, Thailand would most likely have deported him anyway.

I think the way it was done was silly, and I also very much resent the unfair coverage of Thailand resulting from this circus, something you don't seem to care about.

  5. I editted my post ... above

If he is not convicted then fine ... yet again you minimize a year in county jail. and again flight from prosecution almost invariably means you get the max when convicted!

So you are a lawyer from California then? I doubt it. Otherwise, you are only speculating.

I read those items before and as I said before, the THAI officials should have been contacted about that, and it was up to the Thai officials to decide how to deal with a farang in Thailand. There was never any reason to deport Carr on the JB charge; they could have easily got any kind of DNA sample they wanted. In fact, they already had one which tested negative.

If you asking me if he should have been fired from any teaching job? YES, of course. He is mad. But apparantly he is not a murderer and still no hard evidence of actual sex act crimes in his entire life.

  6. You are NOW legally in the same boat in regards to the JB murder.

He made false confessions which put him under suspicion, but he is no longer under suspicion, SAME as you.

You are very emotional about this and would make a horrible juror, I am only citing the California law he is subject to, and what I have read is the usual slap on the wrist consequences in California for such charges. Why does he deserve anything but the usual consequences?

His trial in Cali has NOTHING to do with the JB murder, get it now?

There is also a chance he might not be convicted of these charges, but he clearly will be convicted of the flight charge.

Not sure about the exact legalities, but he was kicked out of Thailand and forced to board that plane udner guard. Call that not being dragged, it is what it is. I suspect if that happened to you, you would call it being moved against your will.

  7. Explain to me how he was "charged" when they are not pursuing prosecution?

True, he was not found innocent, but has the presumption of innocence just the same as you do for that murder.

Legally, both Karr and you are in the exact same boat in regards to the JB murder.

Do you still think he has something to do with that murder?

Of course, he was dragged back to the states. What else would you call an involuntary deportation and being in the custody of cops?

Again, his flight charge is legally a minor charge, no matter how many exclamation points you use. If you don't like California law, move to California, and get active in changing the legislature there.

I don't know if this will be a jury trial matter or not for Mr. Karr, but if it is, I am sure the defense will do all it can to eliminate witch hunt mentality jurors like Mr. JD. He should be treated like any other defendant, period.

  8. If you are going to sell timeshare, you are going to have to accept that being considered a SLEAZEBALL is a fringe benefit of the trade. Don't ask why. Own it. You will feel better.

I took a sleazeball "job" once, selling precious metals to senile US Midwesterners. It took me about 2 days to realize the place was a criminal boiler room only interested in separating suckers from their money. I was only 23 at the time and thankfully didn't have the stomach for it.

My personal opinion is that timeshare deals vary, but overall they are an atrocious "investment" always sold with hard ball sales tactics.

  9. He may be innocent of the murder of JonBenet Ramsey, but he still faces charges in California.

Non felony charge in Calif.Max 1 yr.,he already served 5 months prior waiting for bail. Will probably get time served.Hard way to get a free flight to the states. He is weird. :o:D

I read in one of the news accounts that the penalty is one year and $2,500 for each count for which he is convicted.

He is facing 5 separate charges of kiddie porn and the additional unlawful flight to avoid prosecution charge. After all the publicity, I don't think he is going to be on the streets in 6 months.

Pardon my naivete, but excuuuuuuuuuse me, can someone explain the LOGIC of subjecting this man to a more severe than usual penalty just because of his fame? After all, he was not only found innocent of the only reason he was dragged back to the states, but was never even charged. It is absurd to imagine he did this to get a free flight home, even considering his madness. Free flight home to what? Jail? BTW, the Cali officials have made it quite clear they would have NEVER extradited a person with those minor charges from overseas.

Sounds like a witch hunt mentality to me, as that witch guy mentioned before.

  10. I have commonly encountered situations where the printed e-ticket itinerary was demanded (such as at a security station). One time I had a hard time finding it and asked if this is really required. They said it was. I also have heard if you are bumped off a plane for whatever reason (airline goes bust) having a retro paper ticket puts you at an advantage. Still, I really like e-tickets because you don't have to worry about losing it. If you did lose the printout, you can always print another one from the website.

  11. Time served would NOT be a typical sentence of someone that fled prosecution. In fact, consecutive sentences would be!

Well, you're the expert I suppose. The media which I also don't trust is reporting that fleeing misdemeanor charges is also just a misdemeanor. Meaning not serious consequences. I just don't think he should get special treatment, good or bad, for being famous.

  12. well TQ ... I don't think 1 year in jail and a significant fine FOR EACH OF THE 5 COUNTS is minimal. Sadly this happened prior to the Ferderal Amber Alert law :o which could have assured much more severe penalties!

If you say so, not really aware of the all the implications of that legislation.

I just think he should be treated like any other person facing those charges, and getting the full sentence for each charge would be highly unusual. That kind of overcharging is usually just a prosecution strategy for negotiation, a starting point, as it were. It is much more likely he will get time served or under a year total.

I have read that would be typical for a case of this kind in California (time served, he already was in the clink for 5 months).

Also, if under the law, they can mandate psychiatric help, clearly that would be a good thing.

    Amen.

Meaning what? Are you violent or something? Of course, just thinking about it is OK.

Interesting that people who are always talking about God are the most violent.

  14. to be sneering and taunting the authorities with cries of "i told you so" for falling for his delusions is surely missing the point. this country is better off without him .

as for him making vast amounts of money out of this , well even i would credit the American media with more sense than to promote the story of a pornography addicted paedophile who has also confessed to the murder of a child.

I personally was talking about the US MEDIA, namely FOX and CNN.

They have been thoroughly embarassed by this rush to judgement and they deserve to be reviled for their shameless folly. These are truly not news outlets, but rather delivers of propoganda and infotainment.

As far as crediting the American media with anything, you have really got to be kidding. This guy will write at least one book or have a ghostwriter write it, and the world will eat it up. I would bet the house that within 2 years this guy will either be filthy rich or dead because I also think he is a serious suicide risk. He badly needs a very good psychiatrist and also probably a wealth management advisor.

Why do you keep defending Karr? He is a sick pervert who has wasted a lot of peoples time and played with the emotions of the childs family. I hope he goes to prison for a long time.

You don't know if it was the child's family who actually murdered her, do you?

The truth is the chances this cold case will ever be solved are basically nil, and that means the parents will always be under a shadow of doubt.

I am not really defending Karr. He is what he is.

What I am criticizing is the Boulder DA and the American media, especially their disgusting and false characterizations of Thailand.

This all could have and SHOULD have been dealt with quietly in Thailand by obtaining whatever DNA sample they needed in Thailand. They could have also determined there was no evidence he was in Boulder at the date of the crime. As far as the authorities fears that Karr was a danger to children, the Thai authorities could have dealt with him as they do other other farang sex crims in Thailand. Trouble is, it appears he never actually committed a sex crime in Thailand, unless you believe having twisted mental fantasies and writing emails is a sex act.

The law at least in the US does not call thought a crime, though I respect that Thailand may have a different standard.

You say you hope he goes to prison for a long time. That is valid. I hope you are consistent about this though. Does that mean you also hope that all people convicted of misdemeanors in California should go to prison for a long time, or just him because he is some kind of scapegoat to you? And, he is still under the law, an innocent man, as he hasn't been convicted yet even of those misdemeanors. He has a defense for those charges and he deserves his day in court.

BTW, I support the ACLU in the US and don't appreciate ANY individual being railroaded or scapegoated by mob mentality. He should be treated like any other defendant in court. And what I am hearing is that in California the charges against him are not much serious than an auto infraction. In most other US states, that is not the case, but he faces the charges in California.

And if he makes big bucks out of this, he has every legal right to do so. He is most probably very insane, but his insanity was mirrored by the bungling of the Boulder DA and the rabid American media.

  15. Sex thought crimes are a controversial, emotional and marginal topic. Please try to keep things civil and sane (and preferably Thai-related), folks.

    Yes, I totally agree.

I have been trying to keep this Thai related, to continually mention the damage to the reputation of Thailand brought on by American yellow journalism related to this ridiculous case.

So, in what countries of the world is THINKING and FANTASIZING about a crime, actually a crime?

  16. I wonder what spin the Thai authorities will put on this, as they are just too quick to extradite people on flimsey evidence if any at all? Still Karr won't be coming back to Thailand even though he did nothing wrong here!

While the Thai spin will be interesting, I want to hear the US spin....... they had enough evidence to satisfy "Probable Cause" which obtained a warrant signed by a judge, this would also suffice for extradition. ALL that is required for extradition is a warrant from elsewhere, no evidence is taken nor required, UNLESS the extradition is contested, which Karr did not.

How did the prosecutor obtain a warrant?

What do you mean he did nothing wrong? He is a peadophile, isnt that wrong enough!!!

Did anyone stop to think that he confessed to Jon Benet's murder so he could get of a Thailand Jail, where he knows he will surely rot in hel_l..... so he can be moved to an american jail.. where they get treated better than an average citizen?

People often commit crimes in australia and America just to be put in jail becuase they get treated well... food, tv, a roof etc! beats iving on the street or paying out the ass in taxes!!

No, the only evidence yet presented is that he is pedo in FANTASY only (including his porn tastes).

In his entire life, there is still not one accusation against him that he has commited sex act crimes against children. He is clearly a pedo in his head, but there is still no evidence he is a pedo in real life.

Of course, he fits a profile of someone that either wants to or has done these crimes, but the devil is in the details, no evidence he actually has done these crimes.

In any case, he will never teach again. He likely won't ever be able to be near children again. So he will just have to wallow in his new riches and fantasy life. All in all, his madness was still a good career move. He acted the part, and the US press and Boulder DA played right along. Amazing America!

  17. OK, this brings up a question I was wondering about.

If your Thai bank would accept a US check and it eventually clears, would there be a code in your passbook that would indicate that these funds came in from abroad (for retirement visa qualification purposes)?

I know there is such a code that is clear for SWIFT wire transfers, but I wonder about out-of-Thailand checks.

Anyone have any experience with this detail?

  18. hate to say 'I told you so' but when I first heard of Karr, I told friends that 'giving detailad evidence of the crime was not difficult - if some nut so chose to do so. There has been at least one extremely detailed TV documentary about the Bennet case - even showing such video footage as where, exactly, an intruder's bootmarks were at a basement casement window. The documentary, by the way, gave strong evidence that exonerated the little girl's parents. I think all in all the Denver police could have done a better job from the get-go.

I thought Karr was being wanted by Thai police for something .... ? .... and what was he DOING in BKK anyway .... ? .... I suspect fessing up to a crime that he didn't commit in the US meant that he didn't have to pay a visit to the Bangkok Hilton.

    Virg.

Nope. He was under SUSPICION of POTENTIALLY molesting a specific girl. But there were no charges and presumably no crime. They were just afraid he would do it, which is understandable. You generally can't arrest someone for having the potential of doing a criminal act though. He wasn't under any danger of going to the Hilton.

  19. Will the government pay for his flight back to Thailand ? :o

Actually, not such a silly question.

If he wasn't classified as an undesirable person by Thailand, that would be a legitmate demand. But as things are, he will be in Cali for awhile.

So who should play him in the movie? Jim Carey?

  20. As a murderer. Now he's free to return back to Thailand, since it was false.

He was deported as an undesirable alien.

Now didnt he admit to this case or knew of it ? How is he going to be rich ? I think he would be killed before he became rich !

Perhaps by an very IGNORANT person who doesn't realize that a false "confession" from a madman doesn't mean guilt.

  21. As a murderer. Now he's free to return back to Thailand, since it was false.

I seriously doubt that. It seems likely he is blacklisted now. The fact that he skipped a criminal charge in the US would be good enough grounds. Imagine the continued bad publicity for Thailand if they did let him back. So they won't.

Just a thought, is Mr. Karr a Thaivisa member?
