But are we responsible?, Is it significant?, and can we change anything even if we wanted?

Do I care if sea level rises 2cm every 10 years? Not really.

Does it matter if global temperature rises 2c in the next 100 years?, Can't see a problem myself.

What are the immediate consequences? Scaremongers using it to make money & manipulate fools IMHO.

Well i have done some work here after cyclone nargis killed 138000 or so people in Myanmar so I have seen some possible reason for concern. I think it does effect some people and especially where I live in Myanmar.  The intensity of natural disaster events has increased.

Remember the big hurricane is US texa and Puerto rico etc last year.

Thats an example here. So these many factors all taken together have a costly effect.

And without a lot of money for aid it turns very nasty indeed and all that aid has to come from somewhere.

  2. Forget attacking each other for a bit and lets see what information is correct or not and why.

Our opinions dont matter in the end  but the data that has been collected over the years and everything I see is pointing to man made climate change as the main reason.

Is ice melting, are oceans rising, is Co2 ppm going up, is global temperature rises occuring, and what are the immediate and foreseeable consequences.

Yes it is a complex system and yes there are uncertainties in predicting the future but we have used this method time and again to help us make the future better and not worse.  At this point in human civilisation I think we are reaching the limits of our biosphere and our effects are observable and recorded.

Plastics waste, fisheries collapse,  etc. these are measurable outcomes of civilisation and industrialisation.

Are there any Chinese scientists or Indian ones saying there is no such thing as climate change and no need to change anything?  People in Asia are seeing the effects in rain patterns droughts and floods.

As above some Chinese scientist is working on salt tolerant rice.  This is the sort of direction we need to be going in.

How many naysayers have any evidence to refute the graphs Nasa  has online?

    https://climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/sea-level/

    https://climate.nasa.gov/vital-signs/ice-sheets/

    etc mentioned above...

Even if it were true, 10 years to rise 1 inch isn't a worry for me, I don't own any beach side property 2" from the waterline.

And I'll probably be dead by then even if I did.

Funny thing is, 50 years ago I did live really close to the sea, the old house is still there, and the sea is still where it was 50 years back.

Yes but maybe you will be reborn as Buddhists believe in the future and will experience it then?

And the rate is accelerating. So what if it keeps accelerating at  this rate it will be doing 1 cm a year soon and then 15 cms in 10 years and 30 in the next and you see it quickly could go very bad and its not just sea levels affected its habitats and monsoons and rains and droughts and everything gets more extreme and the rates are beyond the rate that we and animals and the plants can adjust to and we kill off the worlds oceans of 95% of life and the land masses as well and cause a mass extinction because we can. And humans become extinct and then the whole cycle goes on again starting from that 5% of lifeforms that survive.

What if we could change all that and keep the place a bit healthier for the next generations that will be us then?

  4. "This means in effect that sea levels over all will rise with increasing annual rates and it is getting more and more serious.  Sea level is rising at .6 mm per year over the whole world but that rate is increasing."

All you guys arent paying attention.....I was wrong above...just testing you.

The antarctic component is adding .6mm per year which is an increasing rate....Overall I get 3.2mm per year from Nasa's website which has some nice graphs.

  5. Ok concerning towing an iceberg from antartica this was an Australian proposal. It was calculated that we could tow one to South Australia and then pump the fresh water into the interior of Australia to fill lake eyre. The main proponent in Australia was Dick smith.

You have to read these articles carefully and separate the different pieces of inputs that are effecting sea level rise.

The rate of the component that is coming from Antartica has tripled over recent years and is accelerating.

This means in effect that sea levels over all will rise with increasing annual rates and it is getting more and more serious.  Sea level is rising at .6 mm per year over the whole world but that rate is increasing.

    https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-44470208

The rate of change in world temperature is also increasing.

The rate of changes in so many things are increasing and this is an important point. It isnt a linear line change and it makes it harder and harder to see where it is going and all how far it is before it has spiralled out of control.

The effects mean that in the future crops especially rice growing will be effected. In Myanmar where I live we will have a rising water table which contains salt in the delta area which produces 25% of the rice in this area. Areas growing rice now will not be able to grow rice in the future and yields are reduced by soil salinity. So even though they are not going to go under water it has detrimental effects and humans will suffer the consequences.

  6. Yes so lets look at the intention of the rule to stop people living in Thailand for long periods with visa exempt entries.

My example doesnt qualify for that intended end. But it ticks boxes of land crossing more than 2 times in a calendar year. It shows it is not a mandatory regulation but the officers have discretion. You are flagged for their discretion.

People living a month or two in Thailand and then about to leave to cross to Myawaddy and then return are in a different group to me. The Thai immigration officer is going to warn you that if you check out of Thailand you wont be given visa exempt next time and you will have to go all the way to Yangon to get a visa.

We will see if they say anything to me when I check out in a couple of days to go back to Myanmar. I already have a multiple entry visa for Myanmar.

Also imagine the Single entry Tourist to Myanmar who comes back to Thailand from there. Myanmar officials don't give a toss if you can or can not enter Thailand. You will be stamped out. When you get to Thai side of the bridge and have already done two other land crossings (say I went to Laos and Cambodia or came from Malaysia overland earlier) what can they do?  If they refuse you entry you cant go back to Myanmar you are stuck on the bridge.

I average about 6 visa exempt entries to Thailand a year (mostly fly in and out). Each one is not more than 7 days. I live in Myanmar. Just this time I have needed to do a few overland in quick succession.

In looking that the visa requirements for Laos I could see they could turn you back because you can re-enter Laos on a visa on arrival. So each countries borders is going to have a different operational system in practise as far as I can see. (Some earlier posts were concerning expats living in Laos)

Thank you for your surprising and informative feedback.

Yes and to add the next segment to the story. We went to the Pagoda consecration this morning in Myawaddy. The organisers had got some special permission so we were able to take a hired bus from Mae Sot to Myawaddy and back without being stamped in or out and went straight across the bridge both ways. Nice touch. So that worked out pretty easy. So immigration is allowed individual discretion in the application of the laws according to the situation.

  8. Ok glad to report that I got my third visa exempt visa overlanding from Myawaddy to Mae Sot. Was not difficult. The immigration officer asked me where I was going in Thailand and I said just to Mae Sot and only here for 7 days at most. He asked me if I worked in Myanmar and I said no. My wife is burmese and I am retired there. The magic bang of the stamp and I am relieved.

I think the only stress was knowing that I might be refused. If I didnt know I would never have stressed about it.

So I am going to report it is a 99% certainty you will get it in my case.

  9. Ok I live mostly in Myanmar where I have a multiple entry visa. I went to Myawaddy Mae sot land border to re-register a  Myanmar registered motorcycle. Because of the way things worked out I had to cross to Mae Sot on a Saturday. Come back on Monday to sort out the registration during business hours and then cross back into Thailand for the water festival and then after that go back to Myanmar and ride to Yangon.  So I effectively did 2 land entries in a few days. Over a 10 day period.

Ok so I have used up my 2 crossings....but..... I need to do the same thing again. Have to go to Myawaddy cross to Mae sot Thailand come back to Myawaddy for a pagoda consecration 2 or 3 days later and then back to Mae Sot Thailand for a couple of nights then back to Myawaddy and onto Yangon. So I need to do another 2 land entries in a few days total of 5 days.

So whats my chances of getting stopped on entry into Thailand?  Anyone been stopped. I dont stay in Thailand for more than 7 days but this is pushing the literalness of the rules.  If they refuse me entry I will just stay in Myawaddy for the duration.

Anyone got experience of being stopped who is doing short trips like this. Whatever happens I will let you know here. But my example shows a variant which  is not really the reason for the rule but a consequence if they get literal.

And if I get a visa and do it I am still unable to get two trips on 7 days... So I am going to have to rely on the wisdom and mood of the border immigration officer.

  10. The figures need to show how many were not  wearing seatbelts and helmets.

I know many thais put in a fake belt clip to stop the car beeping.

I see thousands without helmets on.

I see plenty of people driving drunk too.

So the idea of safety which we have been taught in our own countries has not been taught here. It seems the opposite is taught. I dont wear a seatbelt or helmet because I am scared of a fine. I do it because I have seen the statistics and know it is safer for me but I seldom see a Thai who shows any concern in this respect.

  11. If you look at a ticket starting in thailand return to australia and then the same flights emanating return from australia to thailand you will see the prices are higher if you began in Aust. They have lower prices for thais that way.

Also their one way fares are almost the same as a return fare.  They are really overpriced.

But it is a strategy that works by you paying more to have more empty seats on board.

Someone did well by not routinely checking the CCTVs.

Strange how many are found not working after a robbery, murder, etc.

I bet there is no routine check of CCTVs at all. I bet once they put them in they never check, service or maintain them. They set and forget. If it breaks it is fixed when they find out which will also be too late.

  13. Yes I can confirm that the Burmese Chancery has moved around the corner to a new building.  It is not 132 anymore, but 110 one block further away from the BTS. This started from 4th of September 2017.

I have been going to the old address which has modified many times since 1980.

  14. Ok Thai Visa always has a solutionist. Here is mine. Immediately send a drone to the car to get some good shots and prove the bodies are in the car.

Then you need to start making a bamboo bridge out to the car. Send in a few burmese....

But I would not like to put other people in danger so a good drone survey would be the go. After that wait. No use spending a hundred thousand to extract this car.
