  1. New: Man Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain, you should find ok.

1995 movie, acc. to IMDB - this is "new"?

    Black Books

    ended in 2004

    Father Ted

    ended in 1998

    >>>>

Is it really what this sampling of the "great" British TV has come down to? Checking out ten year old shows that couldn't last past three season of six episodes?

  2. Shit, I downloaded the US version, season 1.

Though I do appreaciate the idea, it's...., well, a generic form of entertainment, nothing special, they've got crap like this on UBC series 24/7. Maybe the UK version was wittier, but there has been only two short season seven years ago.

Actually I think BuyMore featured in "Chuck" was just hilarious in the first season, before they run out of jokes to fit the characters.

    Watching Tudors now. Boring,

  3. Maybe even maintain the constitution and arrest those who committed high treason by overthrowing a democratically elected government by military force.

    Maintain what consitution?

Under current constitution Thaksin's can't come back and run in elections, even after the amendments.

So you need a revolution, even a simple coup won't be enough.

And that was precisely my point - the price for the possibility of bringing Thaksin back will be nothing short of civil war, and Khmer Rouge/Great Leap Forward like purges to clean the country of "elites" and their influence.

Unfortunately people like Koo don't even try to comprehend the consequences of their actions, but it would be politically incorrect to say that Thaksin supporters is one of the dumbest species knows to men.

  4. you obvioulsy haven't seen many 'samples'.....or just didn't pay attention when you did.

Just how many samples do I have to see to find something I'd truly enjoy?

For now I'll watch the Office and The Tudors. Will check Animatic's suggestions, but the Uk TV has already failed the ultimate test - none of these shows made any impact outside the UK. Americans, on the other hand, came up with several very successful shows that are appreaciated everywhere. From Sex and the City and Friends and Simpsons to 24 and Prison Break. Ok, Simpsons are not popular in Thailand, but it's still a fuc_king good laugh, and so is South Park. I got kids hooked up on it already (even if they don't understand that Stan's father was jerking off all over the computer and what it meant, or what a "quiff" was).

  5. Networking samba from GUI using smb4k

    ..

virtualbox hosting of winxppro and win7

    ..

Everything else goes to auto mounted data drives ntfs formatted to support the file shares to winbox

These are exactly the things that refused to work in my PClos, and in the end I just installed Ubuntu over it and everything just works, after a little tweaking. Haven't tried virtualbox yet, but what I need works in wine already, which wasn't working in PClos either.

Having said that, on another, older machine, Ubuntu doesn't have video drivers to support visual effects while in PClos Compiz worked perfectly fine.

I liked OpenSuse at one time, and it had KDE4, and support on their forums came faster than anywhere else. Unfortunately it didn't have solutions for some of mine hardware problems, so I let it go, alas.

  6. The problems of developing countries going nuclear is not limited to Thailand. I recon earlier I said there are more than thirty applying for licenses now. Pakistan and Inda have nuclear bombs, and comparing to them Thai culture is much more responsible and punctual.

And no, Thaland doesn't have enough electricity for the next 20 years. They have studied possible solution for years, came up with an answer, and now internet experts show off their knowledge and try to convince us that commission was stuffed with morons. Ok, maybe those consultants weren't up to the western standards, but that was the best Thailand could produce. I'm reasonably sure they were educated in the west and worked in energy sector for decades and know all the numbers by heart and keep abreast with recent developments in solar techonology, and they made their decision.

It's a bit presumptious to say "I know better", don't you think?

  7. 'shows' should be judged on merits of entertainment and information, not on nationalistic bearings.

Just watched the first episode of The Tudors, here are two memorable lines:

Advice from French and Italians: "It would do England no good to get involved in our European squabbles. Far better she stands above them."

And then Henry himself decides to abandon his upcoming war with French in revenge for killing his uncle, and goes for lofty ideas to establish "principles of collective security and universal peace" in the rest of Europe - and these are exact quotes.

Do you realise how incredibly patronising it sounds?

Also, don't you know that it is Americans who save the world and establish democracy and freedom and peace? That position is taken.

Otherwise, the show is top notch, I must admit, apart form the bullshit that always comes when a country decides to educate the public on history via television dramas, though it's not as bad as "300" - "We are the Spartans!!!", remember?

Still, the only reason I might continue watching it is that there's nothing else on. No offence, but I just haven't been caught up with the plot yet.

Also I think if they gave Henry a mobile phone, made him stare at it intently for a minute while occasionally poking his thumbs at the keys, and them flash a wide smile of satisfaction when SMS finally goes foo, as if neanderthal learning his first tool - he'd be perfect James Bond - the lad looks and acts so contemporary dumb, with all the mannerisms, and complete lack of class.

  8. Oh, no, we better give these guys what they want, quick. That's the only way to stop the killings. It's them silly stupid Thais who don't understand - the only way to stop murderers is to give them full autonomy and back away with deep respect and never ending apologies.

    >>>

Who serioulsy thinks that moderate muslims will do better job securing the region than Thai army? Where is the line when the murderers will think "that's enough, justice has been served, we'll turn to tilling the land instead"? Will the young bloke who was sawing off someone's head off yesterday with a blunt kitchen knife become a hero of their new, democratically approved history books? What will happen to those who disagree with him?

This has gone way beyond any rational quest for freedom. No sacred goals can justify the crimes they have been commiting lately, and I bet "moderate muslims" are shit scared of the insurgents, too, and want protection of Thai state, never mind the occasional rogue elements. In fact it's the stronger Thai state that is guarantor of securilty there, no one else, so "moderate muslims" should get on board for their own sake.

  9. Black Books, Father Ted, Mock the Week, Not The Nine O'clock News, Yes (+P)Minister, To the Manor Born, Chef,

Britas Empire, Q, My Family, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin, Babes In The Woods, Are You Being Served,

The Young Ones, Bottom, Dad's Army, Morecambe and Wise, Flanders and Swan, Black Adder ( all), Mr. B.,

'Allo 'Allo! Billy Connely's World Tour of Scotland and Wales.

All things I've watched multiple times or have on DVD.

Let's not leave out; Hobson's Choice, Carry On, Kind Hearts And Coronets, Titfield Thunbderbolt, Goon Show,

Man Who Went Up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain, Brassed Off, most anything Ealing, Peter Greenaway's

The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover, Drowning by Numbers, A Zed and Two Noughts, .

Would be more helpful if you singled out two at most.

What should be the best introduction in your opinion? Something not too old and available on the net.

    >>

Actually I must confess - I never watch TV. I gave up following in the early 80s. Here in Thailand I watched Sex and the City because it was on HBO, and Friends because I had a DVD of some season.

Now, with the advent of the Internet, I turned my attention to TV series because vast majority of the moves are such crap. Some I think are just brilliant. Others are unbearable. Many are just not as good if watched once a week, as they are released. 24 mentioned earlier is one example.

There's just some kind of special anticipation when I sit down in front of TV knowing that I will have 10-20 hours of non-stop fun if I watch a whole season through.

  10. Good point.

The consensus will be that the country has to move forward without Thaksin, he is too divisive.

Then we shall see if any other structural disagreements are as bad as they are portrayed to be. I, personally, think that next issue will be people vs politicians rather than rural vs urban, though politicians will surely try to dress it that way by commandeering thousands of villagers to rally on thier behalf.

  11. The house dissolution was neither illegitimate nor for personal reasons at the time. With Chamlong Srimuang leaving Thaksin, and other important members of TRT beginning to side with PAD (Sanoh Tienthong, for example, was soon seen regularly behind PAD stages), calling for new elections was not just legitimate, but necessary.

There was no crisis of confidence in parliament of any kind.

Chamlong Srimuang wasn't even an MP and had no control over any members of TRT or parliament, Snoh's fraction was too small to make any difference.

TRT still had control of some 75% of the House.

Thaksin needed new electoral mandate to make his Shin sale crisis go away, not to assert his party control over the House. It was never threatened, the parliament and the government were as stable as ever.

On the other hand, Shin sale, Thaksin's personal matter, was heavily critisisd, and you don't settle tax cases by running elections. That's abuse of democratic system to your own ends.

The House was scheduled to debate Shin sale before it was dissolved, and you must have a really thick face to say that Shin sale, Thaksin's personal matter, wasn't a reason for House dissolution.

  12. if Khun Thaksin can come back now to run an election, he will be Prime Minister

And that will be victory, huh?

You ever pause to think what changes must be made to give him the possibility to run in the elections? What changes must be made to judicial system and the laws? What changes to the constitution? What kind of opposition to these overwrites?

Realistically, bringing Thaksin back to power will mean the end of Thai state as we know it, and it would mean brutally crashing all those trying to defend it.

    Yeah, SIngapore will be jealous.

  13. good quality educational programming like Discovery or Animal Planet or BBC specials

    You must be kidding???

People turn the TV on to watch some bitchslapping and soapy drama and connom folks winning a fortune, not to watch hybernating frogs thaw.

The question is - Is Thai entertainment any trashier than foreign one? Are Thai game shows less exciting, less educational? Is Thai romance sillier than American?

If they are, by how much? Is it someting to be really upset about?

Also don't forget that whoever wrote that article "Too much trash on That TV" wasn't comparing it to BBC.

    >>>

Bonobo, thanks for the intro to The Office, I got Tudors already, just no time to watch yet. Will try Office, too.

  14. Sure, the boycott, or non-participation and campaigning for No vote, was a loophole to derail TRT attempt to stay in power. It was based on technicalities - that in some provinces TRT wouldn't be able to get 20% of votes, and that led TRT to manufacturing fake parties and tampering with official EC database, and that led to TRT eventual dissolution.

BUT as OMR said, elections were annulled for different reasons, fake party fraud had nothing to do with it.

Assuming that the boycott led to all these troubles, or that it was the starting point of weakening of Thai democracy, is hypocritical. Boycott was the answer to illegitimate House dissolution, and that attempt to use elections for personal ends and not for benefit of the country, was a far greater offence to the democracy and it shouldn't have been acceptable to any "democracy lover".

Thaksin had legal rights to dissolve the House any time he wanted, so technically it was legal - another loophole, though someone could have sued him for not having valid reasons for doing it. Something about failing "The PM should execute his duties for the benefit of the people" principle. Could the PM dissolve the House because he was constipated that morning? Wouldn't it be an offence to democracy? Could the PM dissolve the House on a third day of working, just for the fun of it?

I understand that Thaksin's personal benefits and the benefit of the coutnry are one and the same for reds, so they don't see a confilct of interest. But what about those reds who love to talk about how they moved past Thaksin? Don't they see that the democratic system at that time failed to address this conflict of interest? Don't they see that it was used for Thaksin's personal benefits? At that point it was terminally ill already.

This is where the split for and against the coup generates. For the pro-coup argument - that kind of democracy was extremely dangerous for the country in the long run as it had installed completely wrong values, so it had to be put out of its misery. For the anti-coup argument - it could have recovered by itself and proven itself to be strong, and put itself above self-appointed moral guardians, the generals and PAD and Democrats.

Well, I didn't see it working out that way then, and now, THREE YEARS later, I still don't see that people realise the difference between Thaksin's personal interests and the country. What are the chances they would have realised that difference if TRT was allowed to have its elections and govern during these three years?

You know my answer - the coup was necessary to stop that nonsense, there was no other way.

  15. Silly to talk about support for drivers on Mac.

Can you go to any IT mall and order custom made Mac with any cheap or expensive parts you want? Any video card you fancy? Any audio, any motherboard, any processor, different kinds of ram?

Can you take your old computer to the same mall, upgrade all upgradable parts, and install Mac OS on it?

How many PC makers are out there? Can Mac OS run on any of their machines?

Windows can, Linux can, and that's why we have billions of personal computers in the world, millions of suppliers, all with aspirations and families and so on.

I can't even begin to imagine what the world would have been like without Windows.

    >>>>

For this debate people should look at the big picture, should realise that their personal stories are only one tiny, infinitesimal part of world's experience. You should start thinking averages.

  16. I just installed Ubuntu over Pclos. Most of my problems are gone. Last thing left to set is home workgroup.

Everything else I need just works.

As for .rpm, I tried installing my usenet client and there was no right click menu entry and double clicking on it didn't produce anything. I installed from terminal, in the end. Though that wasn't trouble free either - I got it finally working by downloading .deb and then converting it to .rpm as the original rpm refused to install.

Opera was in their repos, but it isn't in Ubuntu's. Installed from their website, .deb, works like a clock.

Now networking is tricky. Samba wasn't installed form liveCD, but some other network tool was, and now I can't find the way to change ubuntu's workgroup without installing Samba. Weird. Win7, on its own end, doesn't allow to browse all workgroups, so Samba, here I come.

  17. You are just confusing.

So Hilux can pass Euro brake test but Sportrider/Sportcruiser which has the same brakes as Hilux cannot???

    >>>

I've never heard of Sportriders being exported anywhere. I can't find any evidence that they have been.

    http://www.jim4x4.com/toyota-hilux-tiger.html

"In addition, Toyota manufactured several unique models in Thailand, including the Sport-Rider, among others. Sports Rider was a SUV built on Hilux platform."

I would give you a benefit of doubt, but not if you blindly insist on something and threaten with being rude if you don't get it your way.

    >>>

As far as this thread is concerned, if Sportrider has the same brakes, and weighs about as half loaded pickup truck it's based on, it should be enough.

  18. Funny how nobody has decided to recognize that the local constituency controlled by a party swapping influential is one of the big problems

Plenty of people know that, but no one asked them. It's the politicians fixing a system for their own use.

They might get enough public support in their own rural areas to push it through. In urban/Demo parts these amendments will have no chance of passing.

  19. I still prefer to compile certain packages

That's an example of where I heard compile. The actual commands, afaik, are configure, make, install. "Make" is not supported on a fresh install.

And if a new user needs to get it all working just to install a mouse theme - there is a reason to berate the developer.

Repos are a great way to install things, far better than MS, but not everything is in there.Opera, for example, is not in Ubuntu's repos, you have to download the .deb from their site, install via right click menu

And Pclos didn't have a menu entry to install .rpms, btw.

  20. Thai language boards, of course. Find someone interested enough to read a couple for you. Panthip.com would be a good place to start.

There has never been a 3,000 cc petrol engine in Sportriders, and they were never called vans. If you go to Australian used car websites, they don't have a "Sportrider" entry under Toyota models at all.

Sportrider/Sportcruiser brakes should be identical anyway. So was it Toyota made Hiluxes that failed Euro brake tests? That's the only thing that is really important. I googled it and saw some site mention 42m from 80km/h, but I didn't bookmark it.

Isuzu Trooper is very very fuel thirsty. Once we were considering it but were told not to buy it by the seller himself, it was a friendly advice, he was a collegue. Besides, I doubt it has enough actual power for the size, despite large displacement.

Another option in that category is Mitsu G-wagon. It had some nice reviews as an all-round package. There were also pickup based SUVs from Nissan and Isuxu but no one was raving about them.
