  1. Wonder what will happen to all those foreigners that are married, have children, but don't have enough money to get a Non-Imm visa based on marriage.

Will Immigration start splitting up families?

You only need 40K/month for a visa based on marriage or a kid. Even an English teacher makes that.

the number's now 65K/month or 800K in the bank or any combo equating to that. Starting English teachers *might* get half that, but then they'd already have a WP ...wouldn't they!!

    Ah Thailand, Land of Perplexities

its 400,000 for those married to a thai

Yes, I fall into the category above. Married with a son but earn a little less than 40,000. Teachers are covered by the Work Permit. If I had huge savings I could get a non immigration o visa based on that, and retire :-) wouldn't that be nice! Working visa it is then!

  2. Can anyone tell me when they are going to stop giving 60 day tourist visas at embassies outside of Thailand.

Will these be replaced with 30 day tourist visas?

Don't be ridiculous. They will not change the actual 60-days tourist visa.

All that just because someone made a report that some officer, in a lost small border office, may have said that...

    Be serious please.

He did say the order came from Bangkok Immigration, can you link me to anything to the contrary?

No. I read again and what I find is:

"have been ordered by the Immigration Bureau in Bangkok to deny entry to foreigners holding 60-days Tourist visas."

He didn't talk about "stop giving 60 days tourist visa" or "replaced with 30 day tourist visas"

He also said "Tourists" stay for a maximum of 30 days and not 60 days, which implies that they want to reduce the visa length (if that comment has been passed down by anyone in authority).

We'll just have to wait and see, it's anyone's guess at the moment.

  4. This doesn't effect me but I'm intrigued by all the uncertainty. Can anyone tell me when they are going to stop giving 60 day tourist visas at embassies outside of Thailand. Will these be replaced with 30 day tourist visas? If so, surely it's better just to get a free 30 day stamp instead of going through the hassle of getting a proper visa, providing you aren't a "visa runner", which I assume means back to back entries? And, what is the grace period for back to back entries to be deemed acceptable.

I I am not judging the move, they are just moving with the times. Allowing back to back Visa runs with stamps as a way to remain is archaic. This has seriously not been thought out well at all though.

They shouldn't have mentioned the idea before thinking about it first and providing proper information.

Added: I've never done a visa run before as I've gone for the 60 day tourist visa and had it converted to non-I'm b at Bangkok. When my visa expires next May I will need 30 more days here so, ironically, it's now looking like a visa run is my best option, if the 1,000 baht Tourist Visa is shortened to 30 days and requires 2-3 days out of the Country to obtain. Funny world.

  5. Yes, absolutely. I avoid the older expats now as all the ones I've met just sit in a farang bar with other farangs getting drunk most days and then start to argue and fight with their friends as the night comes to an end whilst their Thai wives scream and try to break it up. Seen it many times when passing in the car or stopping for food. Probably the same people who come on here and get really bitter on every post about Thai people or attack the OP and say "why are you here then?" Or "Thailand is not for you" 555!

  6. I brought one for 1700 baht 2nd floor Pantip Plaza. Hard to bargain

On eBay in America probably the same type for 750 delivered to address in America included.

Well I wonder what a Thai student will pay?

was it genuine or copy? How is the battery life so far?

Thinking of buying this one instead from back home http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180885997419&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:GB:1123 as its marginally cheaper including postage (and I can always put a few of my belongings in with it). It's not a genuine one though.

I see that True Sports 3 is only available on th Platinum package or higher. They could've at least put it on the 999 baht per month Super Sports package, tight gets. Plenty of streaming sites out there.

  8. . Salaries are not competitive (out in the sticks in Phrae province, I make 30ish K Baht, and live comfortably, but near any city or tourist center it would be difficult to live on.

I live in Phrae also. Were you part of the group at the Red Head Cafe last Thursday?

This is my second year and the final year that I can have the teachers licence waiver. I'll be returning home next year to do the PGCE

  9. I just spent 15 minutes multi-quotes for it to crash with a website error. Frustrating.

I'll just say to that one person who thinks that parents always pay for their son's/daughters education, you are wrong. That is rarely ever the case. Times have changed since your day and they have student loans and career development bank loans these days that the graduate must pay back with interest. And I think most owners of law firms are scumbags, but not the solicitors themselves. Most owners are very corrupt and do steal from their Clients. I worked for a firm that got involved with fraud and money laundering, I left when I found out and came here.

And to the other person who has not heard a lawyer use the word "dude" before, you should see what goes down on a friday night. Some have even been known to drink a beer or three ;)

To the person who thinks teaching children in Phrae is worthless, if you are going to spend the rest of your retirement here in Thailandat least try and have respect for the Thai people.

Thanks all for your help, I feel so much better now. I know that all I can really do - due to the lengthy and expensive court procedure and tendency for the Police to look out for their own first of all - is bend over and take it. I completely lost the plot with anger when I did the OP, I'm still angry but I've got it under control.

    Cheers thumbsup.gif

  10. Lol I'm not dead, yet....just working.

Firstly I better put those minds at ease who are upset about the lack of paragraphs, the browser on my phone deleted the paragraphs when I posted to this site and it may have done it again this time around. But yeah, the area is in decline for sure, but this has more to do with cuts and reforms rather than a young broke guy wanting to retaliate for being callously ripped off.

Thanks all, there really doesn't seem like much I can do and she knows that. Thailand is pretty lawless in comparison to the UK.

I'm not sure why a couple of you say "learn from it", there's nothing to "learn" from and no way of avoiding someone steal your money. Also, not sure what you mean by saying I've been a year so I should learn about Thailand. You have no idea of what I know and do not know about the place. I can only assume from your lack of knowing me that you are referring to me wanting to strike back/get even/resolve this. That's not Thai but that's me, whether in Thailand or not. Sorry dude, that's not something that I can change, or something that I necessarily want too change.

If you think all lawyers are always law abiding out of hours, you're very very wrong. They are humans too.

Thanks again for the contributions, I'm going to keep the keys for 4 weeks and then give them back. I may as well limited her ability to rent it out if I'm paying for the month.

  11. Hello,

I am a 29 year old Teacher who moved into an apartment (Vee House) in Central Phrae with my Thai wife last month. We were told that we could stay the night for 450baht or 3500baht per month. We decided to unload our car that night as it was late at night and go with the option of staying for at least a month. Although she is far from fluent, the landlady understands English and she would have known our intentions.

She asked my partner how long I will be teaching at the school in this City, and she replied perhaps it would be around 12 months. She later written this onto the contract for the apartment without our consent.

We are approaching the end of our month now and the landlady has known for the last 2 weeks that we are will be moving into a house at the end of the month. Yesterday (3 says before expiration) she stated to my partner that she will keep my 3500 deposit as we haven't stayed for at least 3 months. This minimum term was never mentioned previously, and is not in the contract. However, she just keeps saying "rules are rules", and "it is the same everywhere in Thailand".

I told her that she has an obligation to tell people before signing the contract whether there is a minimum term. I also told her off for contracting three other "farang" teachers on minimum terms without even explaining the Thai written contract to them. Her answer was, I will do that now (1 month after they have signed it!), but she THINKS they will stay 6 months. "THINKS!!!" How ridiculous.

I've tried talking with her and told her that we are moving out into a house share to reduce our costs and I can't afford to give her 3,500 baht (either way I'm not that generous). She said she would forfeit the electricity bill (800 baht) and water charges, but wont refund my deposit as "rules are rules". She keeps phoning my heavily pregnant wife bothering her when I've told her not to, as this is my money and not her concern. She told my wife that if I call again she will withdraw her offer and ask for the bills to be paid.

What do you think I should do? I'm due to move out today.

I've had some horribly aggressive thoughts over the last week and it is really bothering me. More so, because I can see it is upsetting my pregnant wife and I'm worried about the impact it may have on our baby. An easy answer is to let it go, but the money would be useful after the wedding and before the birth. Also, if I let this slide she will just keep doing this to other people.

I've told her that I'm keeping the key until I get my money. As we are now living in the house instead (after today) I expect her to change the locks to the apartment. In this event I will probably break the lock as I want to get access to it at the very least if I am still paying for it. I've even had thoughts of just taking the 7,000 baht fridge freezer and 1,000 baht tv and just selling it to recover the deposit amount.

Alternatively, I have thought about sending her a "letter before claim" and issuing a claim. The annoying thing is that if this were in England this would be easy work for me as I was a lawyer back there. Over here I have no more of an idea about the legal framework than anyone else.

Advice needed (I did post something in the "Ask a lawyer" section, but I can see that not all of the posts get answered and also I can't post additional comments/updates on the situation).

    Thanks

  12. Thanks for your replies. Sorry should of given you more to work with. I'm a British citizen, spend 6 months a year in Thailand. Got a full UK driving licence and had for 15 years ish but unable to drive a motorbike in England as I'm not covered by the licence I got due to passed after a certain year I believe. Only thing concerns me I won't pass it if its just in Thai as not that confident yet. Thanks for the link ill get reading through that.

After you have filled in all the relevant forms, you will have a colour blindness test and an emergency braking reaction time test.

The test examination in Chiang Mai is in English and there are about 30 questions to it.

When I went for my test, there was no instructional video to watch before hand. The man in charge said, "you take test, you fail you take test again straight away". Obviously without any instruction I failed the test, fortunately at the end of the test the computer tells you the answers that you got wrong... so bring a pen and paper with you! I took the test again straight away and passed!

You will then go out on to their test track on your motorbike and ride around their simulated roadway system under the watchful eye of another examiner, if you pass the roadway part of the test then you will be issued with a licence.

All in all it took about 3 hrs to get my licence.

If you have a car licence then you can get a Thai car licence without taking test. Just fill out some forms and get a new photo taken.

    Thanks for this.

I'm looking at getting my one year licences (bike and car) before the rules change on 01/06/2014. I live in Phrae, and I think Chiang Mai is the nearest place to me where I can take the test.

I don't have my drivers licence card here in Thailand, just my certificate. It is not an international licence as required (according to the official website) but if I keep telling them it is they might believe me, or not care.

Do you know if the test office is closed at the weekend? What are the opening hours? Can someone please help me find a map or an address.

    Many thanks :)

  13. Phew! Close one for me. I was planning on doing my first run of this kind today across the Chiang Rai border as my Tourist Visa was due to expire today. Thankfully, I decided to extend in Thailand for another 30 days instead before the long holiday weekend kicked in. I feel bad for those stranded on the other side of the border who may not have enough cash to take them to the nearest embassy and get the visa now required.

Why couldn't this be mentioned earlier?
