  1. hi!

    sawadi ka

    l've lived in Roi-et for a month.

But l literally don't have anybody else to talk to.(except my husband)

Also I have nothing to do at all..

I really need some friends, otherwise i'm goning to mad... :o

    please!!! help me...

    Hi there.

I am not a woman but I/we visit Roi Et every year on our way to the village.

A couple of places that I know of are,

    White Elephant resturant and bar,

not far from Roi Et City Hotel ( across the road and around the corner a little ).

Run by a nice German guy and his wife and gets a lot of Farang people

The food is VERY good as well.

The other is 101 Pizza on the oposite side of the lake from the main shops,

I heard that the Farang husband died last year but the Thai lady that runs / r an it speaks good english and makes good food.

When we were there last year, some of the local Farang including a teacher or two met every afternoon.

    Nice peaceful place.

Good luck and all the best.

  2. I am a "roll your own " smoker and when in Thailand I have smoked plenty of that.

When I was there last it was only 3 baht and I got the medium strength stuff.

I used papers that I had bought from home because the Thai ones dont have glue on them and I also used filters.

I found that it made me feel a bit sick in the morning and asked the wife if they put any drugs in it.

    She said no.

I pondered on the sprays that they may use but have been told that tobacco doesnt need spray.

I took a large bag of it back home but it dried out very fast ( no humidity ) and became very harsh.

So I would say, get the Drum,

    All the best.

    Greetings,

I will be visiting Ubon June 2nd thru June 23rd, been to Thailand 6 times now but never been to Ubon. Did alittle bit of research and decided to pay Ubon a visit. I did some research on hotels and am looking at Tohsang, Sri Isan and also Wrong Way.

I believe the owner of WW is Rich - I emailed him to see if he has any rooms available. I am from the USA, 23 year military veteran considering spending more time in Thailand in the near future. Been to Pattaya, Udon Thani and Nong Khai - all of them had their good and bad.

I hope to run into some expats while in Ubon and hopefully get some insight into the area. Well take care all and any replies will be answered. Thanks! Robert R.

I would also take a look at Nevada Grand and Laithong hotel. Nevada beeing my favourite is 1000 baht, and have several restaurants, night venues, etc. nearby.

Both Tohsang and Laithong are 1200 baht, but a little bit away from the action.

WrongWay (did'nt know the owner was rich :o ) is the main venue to meet expats, and there are OK rooms (aircon/hot water/cable tv) just behind for around 400 baht.

Another place to meet local expats in Ubon city is N'Joy, a small bar run by the wife of Loui (Aussie), and located at the end of same road as Tohsang Hotel, and thus a little off centre.

Richard & Ting in WrongWay, and Loui & Eet in N'Joy will provide you with valuable info about Ubon city and surroundings.

Have a nice stay - and maybe we'll catch up as well :D

    Hi Rob,

I just spent to long writing a reply to your post and got timed out so this time, I will just say that Ubon is really worth visiting.

Food for me was a problem eg. breakfast and lunch.

    Wrong Way has great food.

Was told that Laithong has good breakfasts ( and breakfasts are hard to find in Ubon if you like Farang food ).

    Close to Laos.

Has a beautifull river running through te middle of it and Mea Khong not far.

I will try to post a couple of pics of the rooms behind wrong Way.

Also you can search the posts on Thaivisa using the search box at the top of the page.

Try Ubon or Wrong Way. I have posted allready.

    All the best.

  4. I'm going to go and stay in Nangrong for a few weeks its not my first trip to stay with my Gf family , but i will be my longest, in the past i was pretty bored after the frist day . ive been reading this issan forum for a while now ,reading what you guys do to past the time .

this time i will have my own bikes so i can travel around a bit,im not really interested in temples, my GF is telling me a cant go fishing anymore near her house (police will lock me :o ??)

so can anyone give me some info on some thing i could do while in nangrong area, there was a post i read about canoeing on the mae Nam Mun river which don't look to far away from nangrong , or any other river ,do they have canoe's for hire at some places?

we went to "had-chom-tawan" a big lake , or river not sure ,that was ok for a day out ,but was too far away really.

    any info or input appreciated

    thanks

    jay

    Hi there,

I have the same problem when I visit " the village ".

It is quite a lot further north than Ubon ( dont really know where you are going but have been to the Mun river ).

Last time I was there I swore that it would be the last but time dulls the memory and we are going back up there this year.

This time I also have a motorbike of my own and have plans to do a good amount of exploring.

This is something that I do enjoy upcountry, there are so many little villages scattered around the place and it is a little like being an explorer. First white man and all that stuff.

I want to know why your GF says that you cant go fishing because that is something that I plan to do a lot of next trip.

Arent farangs allowed to go fishing in Thailand either?

    All the best

  5. Even if it were possible, I can only imagine that it would be extremely expensive to make such a retrofit. How much more does it add to form up and pour the columns. I heard the concrete structural work is some of the cheapest part of the construction.

Another idea is to build the ground floor with a roof on and then when you are ready to build the second floor, crane the roof off (or dismantle ), build the second storey and crane the roof b+ack on or reassemble.

Hey IGNIS, have you got any good recipes for " peri peri " or ' Piri piri " . Ih have been experimenting.

  6. Just checked,

Google john shield and then choose his personal site.

It is all around 2002 so a bit out of date but still interesting and some good pics.

Also searched the forum with Mahasarakham and came up with a lot.

Probably because of me most of them ( I wanted as much info as I could get before I went UP there ).

    Hotel Taksila is another one.

  7. Hi there,

try typing Mahasarakham into the the white search box at the top of the page because there have been a few people ask this question, including me.

The wife says that she checked out the Wasu Hotel and it looked good but had no email 3 years ago.

    Maybe different now.

There is another website by a bloke that lived and worked at the university there.

I will try to find it and post it here.

P.S. My wifes village is not far from this place.

    All the best.

  8. Been married to my Issan wife for two years with the majority of that time living in London where we had a nice clean apartment. Last month moved to wife's remote village in Isaan and i'm finding the standard of my wife's cleaning to be sub-standard. This is from the cooking area to general areas inside and outside too.

At present i'm finding this unacceptable and find myself constantly cleaning.

Do you think i'm being to picky?

I dont blame you at all for feeling this way.

When we visit my wifes village, all rubbish goes straight out the window.

What the chickens dont eat ( the plastic bits ) gets raked up every blue moon and burnt.

Tables and the like are there for hideing used plates for a few days and to give the armies of ants something to survive on until next time.

It just seems to be normal where we go. This is a remote village and probably different to larger centers.

    It really pisses me off.

They seem to have no idea about food safety and must have guts like dogs.

I am not a clean fanatic, far from it.

When we were upcountry last time ( March 07 ) I got a dose of the sh*ts for a full week and I was being carefull.

  9. Thank you SBK for taking the sensible option. I guess at the moment my luck is really down. I met a wonderful girl at the weekend. Seemed perfect. Everything you could want. Unfortunately she made off this morning with last nights takings. And she was not a bar girl, just a normal working girl. She would not even spend the night with me until we were married. Bad luck I left the takings in my clothes which she conveniently cleared up for me.My ex did take the funny side of it though and helped me track her down. of which we got 1,000 back. But still as the expat put it, people are not really interested in stuff like that ( although apparantly he makes his living writing things like that)

    Are you joking????????????????

    Not???????????????

How many bad cards can you draw from a pack????????????

  10. Hi Mac,

have been through this many years ago the difference being that , it was a farang lady in a farang land.

I took my son when he was 2 Y.O. and spent the next 17 years raising him.

He is a good person now and long gone from my care but never far from my thoughts.

I was in my late 30s when I took my son and it was very hard even though I had some help from my family.

The buck still stopped with me.( I still had to wipe his bum and change the sheets after he had pissed my bed).

In hindsight, and I dwell on this sometimes, I have no regrets BUT I really dont think that I would do it again.

Now I am free but I miss the lost years sometimes.

Please dont forget that the cute baby is not going to be a little gem forever.

All the best to you and we wish you the best of luck.

  11. Hi Ray,

I have enjoyed all of your posts on TV over the last few years.

You have allways told it straight.

Just wundering, why you came to Thailand. Hope you dont mind if I ask.

Also, what is Water Buffalo University and the AA approach?

    All the best.

    WELL ????????

  13. Hello Malt48,

    sorry if I offended.

Did you mean that you were going to spend 5 days in Thailand or 5 days upcountry?

The reason that I ask is because the first time that I went upcountry was a mix between adventure and culture shock.

5 days in a village is probably the maximum for me but 5 days in Thailand, is definately not enough.

Have thrown in a couple of pics of upcountry shops and one of a bit of a rice farm.

Can send more if you are interested.

    All the best.

  14. Hi guys,

you dont think that this post is just trying to spice up the forum and keep it alive do you?

Easy to do if you are in the know if you know what I mean so to speak.

  15. What is or has been most annoying "thing" what has happen to you on your time in LOS,,anywhere from Gov offices, to bank or in the local stores or people.

Im sure that all of us has something what has sometimes "eaten" us, because it's not so easy to dealing in here with vasious issues.

Should we open the "pandoras" box?

    You know,

I try to go with the flow when I am in Thailand.

Just kick back and enjoy the heat, smell and everything else that comes with a Thai trip.

But the last time we were in Bangkok The Thai way almost tiped me.

All we wanted to do was to fly from BKK to Roi Et.

Only one airline does it and only once per day.

We phoned PB Air and they booked us three seats on the next flight, and tell us that it now leaves at 7.00 AM. from the new airport so we have to leave the hotel at 5.00 AM.

    Great ( not )

We ask PB Air if we can get the tickets at an agent to save us going half way across Bangkok in all that traffic.

We were told " no problem you can pick up from some travel agent down the road"

Go to the travel agent down the road and they tell us with a smile " sorry no seats on that flight"

BUT we have the booking number here it is. It is allready confirmed!

Sorry no seats. With a smile.

The smile was driving me crazy because it meant nothing.

We had to ( or the wife had to ) spend 2 hours in BKK ttaffic in a taxi going to the office of PB Air just to pick up the silly little bits of paper.

Thailand thrives on silly little bits of paper.

This is what drives me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    a 1lb burger

Next time I am at "THE VILLAGE" for a week of almost no food and way too much bia,

it will be a bee line to Surin for a sample.

Can I buy these things buy the slice?

Buy the way, how long does it take to get from Mahasarakham or Roi Et to Surin do you know?

Last time we went to Ubon ( 4 hours ) and flew to BKK from there.

  17. Martin

I know no details, but you'll have my concern and support.

    Don't worry - be happy! :o

    Me to,

F.C. is a wealth of information on this forum.

We have been hovering around north of Surin and havent been there yet, but , the only reason that we would visit Surin is to go to the F.C..

    All the best.

  18. I am now living in Issan and my crate of stuff, including my charcoal grill, has finally arrived. I made some inquiries about aromatic wood for grilling/smoking and was advised to try mango & makam. I've tried mango, but am not 100% pleased with it. (I would kill for a hickory tree)

I would like to know what else you all might use here.

As an aside, I have thought about having my brother send me some hickory nuts to plant here. This is a "long term" solution, obviously. Will deciduous trees, like hickory, grow here in Issan? What about mesquite?

    Thanks, Tagaa

Someone was asking questions about this very subject some time back and there is an excellent wood growing naturally upcountry.

Try a forum search at the top of the page.

  19. Another idea is to search the forum.

At the top of this page is a box with a search box next to it.

If you type in house builder or something like that it will search the forum.

Type in anything that takes your fancy and it will come up.

  20. hello all from New Zealand- Im am married to a Thai girl from Phetchabun who has a village shack house that her mother lives in just outside

of Phetchabun- I wish to build an ecomonical 3 bed room house on this site- Can anyone put me in touch with a good house builder-

    Many thanks- Phil- (stagboy)-Auckland- NZL

    Hello Phil,

    I am a Kiwi to.

Our stomping ground when upcountry is Mahasarakham area, pretty much straight east of Phetchabun and quite a way.

I have been impressed with some of the houses that have been built in my wifes village since I have been going there. The concrete floor houses with plastered brick and steel or tile roof type are simple and practicle and farang friendly.

I suppose it depends on how much you want to spend and what you want.

The wife says that the builders will travell.

Let me know if you are interested and I will get some more info for you.

    All the best.

  21. Hello,

does anybody know what a "isaan tattoo" is?

    Thanks for any feedback.

    Loung Maak.

Well, my wifes father has a real one right across his chest and so does his son.

Wife says that it is to protect from the ghosts

The father is a bit of a medicine man and has quite high standing in the village.

  22. Hi going here in 2 weeks Any recommendations..Thanks in advance..Bill

    Hello Bill,

there is some good info here about this subject.

At the top of this page is a white box with " search " next to it.

If you type in " Ubon Guesthouse " or anything that you want to check out and press the search button it will search the forum. There is a new guesthouse in Ubon and somewhere in this forum is info and even some pics from a member. I would try to find it but it is late where I live.

The rooms behind The Wrong Way Cafe are O.K...... but ............... there were clusters of cockroaches in the shower area when I was there ( the Thai ladies laughed when I wanted some spray and said something about farang ) and the hot water didnt work, not that that was a problem.

The room was very comfortable apart from that. Some pics in the forum somewhere.

Also food at Wrong Way is excellent.

Try the search and hope you enjoy Ubon. Great place!
