  1. They will most probably do what True did:

1- massive marketing campaign extolling the virtues of 4G

2- deploy it initially in Malls and major 'cities' i.e. BKK only for the first 6 months, where you don't need it because wifi is there

3- increase the package rates to match the nouveau craze; they will initially start you with a low tempting offer then ease you into the more expensive tariff

4- throttle down the speed to under 2G after they discover they have not or can't afford to buy more equipments needed to maintain the speed for the million stupid subscribers who do not know any better

5- by the time they iron few wrinkles out of hundreds existing ones, start working on 5G advertising campaign and the cycle would recommence.

  2. How would you rate this one?

I went away for a week and was greeted by this one one my return.

Note the triangular head! We learned at school back when we were kids that oval head are harmless and triangular head are poisonous! I don't know if that holds true here!

  3. First let me apologise if this is the wrong forum to post my inquiry to, I couldn't find a specific/appropriate one.

I will be moving shortly from my present accommodation to a temporary one , awaiting the readiness of the more permanent one.

I would like to go to the local post office and rent a postbox and ask them to divert my mail to that box where I can pick it at my own convenience.

Is this viable in Thailand? Can experienced members suggest an alternative method if what I intend to do is not viable?

  4. Thank you for your effort. much appreciated. It has solved the financial side, and you are right they all are similar as far as pricing is concerned.

My target is a net sim for ipad. I am trying to gauge member's experience with the three major providers, such as:

    - Are they similar in service. I recognise that it would depend on the area one lives in to a great extent. I live in the provincial city of chonburi, half way between pattaya and bkk and make the occasional trip to either. I quarterly go on an extended weekends to major cities in thailand.

    - which of them has the more extensive network with a good wifi fall back; does it function decently, or is it a waste of money.

    - I also read on the forum that TOT offers 3g SIM card and should not be discounted. Perhaps members who use it could share their experience.

  5. I am trying to cull some information to make a comparison table between the three major providers through their respective website with no luck. Their use of images instead of text to explain their offerings, makes it impossible for google translate to be of any use. And most of their english language buttons are there for decoration only.

Perhaps members, who use a net sim could share their experience?

  6. Been to the local Chonburi Samsung center.

After a stroke inducing attemps at explaining the following, to the assistant technician (the senior one has a meeting, probably with a female in a boudoir)

    "My smarthub is in thai"

"I requite it in english like the model i saw on your desk"

"Please help me or tell me what to do"

Not a word of english, and my thai is less than mediocre if I want to be optimistic. Finally after a fair amount of gesticulations and double dutch blabbering, on both side, the cleaning woman, bless her heart, advised the assistant to go and see the problem for himself.

Women of all races, amazes me, they are never short of practical sense,!

I loaded him on the motorbike, it is just a kawazaki ksr slightly modified to fit some of my height, proved a bit too high for the lad and i had to practically carry him and seating him behind me. I might add that I made sure the shopping bag i carried was firmly and securely wedged between that area of body contact...just in case....!

Arrived home, showed him the tv . fiddled a bit with it, discovered what I was trying to explain about the thai and the region setting and decided that he has no clue, but promised to alert The Senior Engineer on Monday.

    Hope springs eternal!

I will keep you posted guys.

  7. I finally succumbed and bought a Smart Tv.

Samsung 55" that was at an attractive discounted price (no doubt clearing the stock for a more advanced, probably curved ones soon). it came with a handy new generation remote.

The Smart Hub is cool, but I suspect it register accounts based on location and subject the subscriber to the contents of his location, which, as far as Thailand is concerned, have some of the very recent movies and blockbusters....except, it is dubbed in Thai.

Has anyone come come across, this situation? Is there a way around it, meaning getting to register with a Hong Kong or australan server for english language? Assuming Samsung has a similar Smart Hub service in their territories!

I suppose I can watch my stash of torrents TVShows and Movies through Plex, pity XMBC does not exist for Samsung or so I believe.

The nice thing about XMBC is I can do away with Mac mini and re-attach its hard drive to the TV through its USB 3 port.

XMBC has a torrent client and downloads to the attached drive directly, and makes A/V available to the tv.

Of course, a jailbroken APPLE TV (has to be 1 or 2 gen) can offer all that and probably more, but that defeat the purpose of the Smart TV and its HUB.

Has anyone found a novel way of dealing with such situation?

  8. I am moving from True post-paid ฿599 to DTAC ฿199 as it seems to fit my need and usage.

My billing cycle ends on 9 of November and I am hoping DTAC will effect the switch or 'port' before the 9th.

On my last visit to DTAC they told me it will take a lot of time to do it, (they initially promised 1 week) and I am worried True will charge another ฿599 plus tax for the billing cycle.

Is there a way to terminate or at worst minimise the next bill cycle, without loosing my number, should DTAC takes its sweet time to do the switch?

  9. Based on you advice, I have purchased a prepaid DTAC SIM card for ฿149 that includes a week worth of data on 3g, enough for gauging.

After a bit of a muddle, the girl was able to give me the appropriate card that finally put me on Trinet.

I live in in Muaeng Chonburi and off the beaten track. The reception is full bar and seemed to switch flawlessly from dtac to DTAC to TH-DTAC as I moved around from home, to work, to mall and to market.

The data was quite fast compared to my existing True 3g. I still have to test it on my weekly visits to bkk, possibly in a couple of days, but I expect it to be equally if not better, as bkk coverage is superior.

The package of ฿199 seems to fit my needs and usage, as I outlined in my initial post. I shall wait till my billing cycle is over and migrate from True to DTAC and hopefully, start saving on my tel bill.

Thank you all for you advice and contribution.

  10. I think you will find the 5gb are for 3g after which, you will be confine to Edge, which is much slower, and that is the Thai way of saying unlimited.

Try and go to a branch frequented by international customers, where English is decently spoken and understood. Paragon in Siam square comes to mind, if you live in Bangkok or a surrounding area or province.

But before you do go to the major providers' sites i.e. DTAC, TRUE, AIS and compare prices. Other threads on this forum talk extensively about the quality and coverage, if you care to search and red through. You will find your requirements might fall in the ฿900-1300 bracket.

Warning! Don't expect quality internet if you are outside a major city or off the beaten track, no matter how much the provider promises, and whatever package you end up with.

    Hope

  11. What is "hernia-inducing" speed? Is your phone particularly heavy? If that's bad, then suspect you have problems with your plan or configuration?

It is just an iPhone 4s with a battery backpack cover.

The hernia is caused when I try to suppress my frustration over the 3G speed and containing my aggression when I try to call CallCentre to complain about the speed. It is all figurative speech.

Of course after living in Thailand for 5 years and being enlightened by ThaiVisa fora I came to the conclusion that it is all pointless:)

DTAC seems to be offering a starter kit that suits my usage requirements:

I would add a wifi package from True, since they have the highest number of hotspots, for 100baht.

Has anyone had a positive or otherwise experience with DTAC trinet?
