  1. You can find the ones made from 1095 steel or jeep truck springs if you travel from Chiang Mai out towards Bo Sang. There is a cart set up on the south side of the road with a large selection. Or, if you stay in town and go down Chang Moi road, about 500 meters down on the left side of the street there is a shop selling lots of farming hand tools, parang included, also made from 1095 steel. Or... straight on into Warrarote market and you can find several shops that sell them, one being right on Chiang Moi, facing the river on the left side. Expect to pay at least $3-$5

My old radar says 500 meters down Chang Moi road would be in the river or on the other side. Do you perhaps mean about 50 meters where in the past there was, last time I needed a chopper, a nice shop of your description?thumbsup.gif

Measuring with GoogleMap, I see that the distance from the Moat to the river is about 950 meters, but my 500m estimation was waaay off too. The shop I had in mind was less that 75m from the Moat, on the left side. Prolly the same one you are thinking of. They have some well made, heavy-duty work tools at very good prices.

    http://goo.gl/maps/Bl2Rt for a street view.

Thanks, that is the shop, I need to try to recalibrate the old unreliable radar.

Thanks, guys. I'll pay the shop a visit. By the way, FolkGuitar, do you mean expect to pay at least US$3 to US$5 or US$30 to US$50?

  2. I met a guy in the street one time, near the Kasem store near Chinatown. He had a fine selection of parang type blades, and heavier choppers. He had a chunk of galvanized pipe that he whacked into to show how good his knives were. If I knew how good they were I'd have bought the whole lot. They were MUCH better than anything I've seen in the shops or at the roadside. Polished all over to a dull sheen, great edge, very heavy duty. Anybody know the ones I mean? They were all stamped "OTOP".

Sound like maybe his knives were made in Aranyik Village. Their OTOP product is knife.

  3. I'm not backing Suthep. Thai people need to learn to follow the democratic procedure. It seems that all they have to do is protest and then they get their way. What's the point of having a parliament?

If Yingluck survive a no-confident vote, then stick with it. If every country's government operate like Thailand, then the whole world will be in chaos.

  4. I live in Chiangmai. I need to find a rechargeable MP3 recorder that either comes with a mic (prefer a mic with a clip-on) or has a mic input. I need it by tomorrow (else I would buy online) for an event on Wednesday. The purpose of the mic is so that the speaker doesn't have to hold the recorder.

I tried Pantip Plaza. The only one I found does not have a mic input.

Does anyone know where I can find one in Chiangmai?

  5. What I would like to find is a source for extension cord wire. (2.5mm x3) with the nice flexible sheath. I had a place that carried it and I should have bought all they had, because now it's gone and they don't even know what I am talking about.

I also would like to get the same cable. Let me know if you ever find the source.

    Thanks.

  6. I went to Rimping at the Airport and bought a Silverside cut which was around 650 - 750 per kilo (many cuts available) went home and let it go in the oven for hours until it was falling apart - lovely bit of beef.

I am sure you will get a decent cut there to cook your roast

I am looking for roast beef that's already cooked. Ready to use.

    Thanks.

  7. I did search the ThaiVisa first before posting. Many posts were at least 1 to 2 years old. I just thought that there might be new markets/stores that offer better prices and quality since then.

    Thank you for your input.

  8. I love meat, especially roast beef. Recently I went to the newly opened Central Festival Plaza to check out their roast beef price. I was shocked to see that it was sold at more than 1500 Bahts per kilo. Can anyone recommend a better market to buy roast beef?

  9. Can anyone recommend a USB WiFi for Ubuntu? Where can I buy it? Also, which service is better: True, AIS, 3BB, dTac? I live in Chiang Mai (near Chiang Mai university).

  10. Ignore the above post!!

Yes, you can use 120vac extension cords to carry 220vac. They are just that, extension cords. They have a plug on one end and a socket on the other. There is no power supply in an 'extension cord" so it doesn't matter, it's just a wire between the plug and the outlet.

But don't plug your 110vac appliance into a 220vac socket unless you first check that it's power supply will accept a 220vac input, otherwise a big puff of smoke! Many power supplies are universal and will accept anything between 100vac and 240vac, 50/60hz.

By the way, have you make your own extension cord in Thailand? What type of cable do you suggest? Is it cost effective to make it yourself?
