  1. Right, I just phoned the 'help line' in the UK, all was going well until she asked me for a 'document number' that I was supposed to have from Trendy, beginning with a 2 apparantly...but I have no such thing, all I have is a document receipt that I show when I go to collect my PP, this receipt also had small white piece of paper attached with a DHL tracking number, but definitely no doc number?? When I told her I had no such thing she said that the 'progress team' would/should be able to help me by just giving them my name and DOB etc, she tried to transfer me but they were busy so I will call back later.

She told me the turn around time was 6 weeks at present, which maks me due around now, but seeing as delboy has been waiting since 9th May, I'm not that confident.

  2. Fella from the UK runs it. Has a bright yellow sign outside with a Union Jack also, flapping in the wind. It is opposite where the new driving range is going to be, near Greenfield Villas 3. He touts it as an 'English style' restaurant, English breaksfast, fish and chips, etc. He has been there for around a year now and don't think he is doing very well at all, the place is usually empty. The inside is actually refurb very nicely, but let down by no air con.

He has a female Thai chef in there who I believe is his 'partner' and she is a very good cook. I have been in there 3 times and it has always been very nice, like home made. Downside is he is well overpriced, particuarly for the darkside, as an example bangers and mash or a cottage pie costs around Bt230.00

If you don't mind paying a bit extra for decent quality the place is worth a shot. word of warning though, the fella can talk the hind legs off a donkey, and I'm not joking. He is closed on Tuesdays.

Not a review as such, just ptutting it out there as he really does need a few new punters dropping by.

  3. Thanks for the responses, almost all of them have been positive, which have made me feel good about the move.

I/we will be up there next weekend, can anyone recommend an individual or a company to contact that can show me a few houses? Thai or Farang is ok. Khon kaen homes and ddproperty seem to be the big 2 up there..

    Cheers.

  4. I agree with nearly all the comments here. To make big money, you need to be rich before you start. (That is why banks dominate the markets.)

But if you DO have say 100k to throw away (in other words, the stock market is like a casino...you have to be prepared to LOSE and not worry about the money you have just lost), you can make money.

One aspect of trading might make you money on a regular basis: choose a bank or oil or gold company and follow its trading pattern for a few months. You need to find a company whose shares trade in the millions (very liquid therefore) and in a volatile situation (oil and gold, for x). Also choose a company that pays a dividend of about 5/6%, so that if your trade gets frozen at too high a price, you can still pick up a dividend until the price comes back up.

So, say Citi Bank's shares are $100 and you have $100k. So, at 9.30 am (ET) you buy 1000 shares of Citi Bank at $100. By 11am the shares have gone up to $101 or 1%. You sell your 1000 shares at $101 and now have made a profit of $1000 in a few short hours. Hard work.

But if Citi B has gone down to say $95, you can still hold on, confident that you will at the very least be able to pick up a dividend payment of $5000 per annum. As I say, this will not make you rich, but at least you are minimising your losses.

But note, you are not going to get super rich that way. If you can make that trade just once a week, you would make about $50,000, which is not at all rich in NY, but would be super duper rich in Thailand......

Bt1.6 mil a year is super duper rich?? Ha ha ha.

  5. I can assure you there is no scheduled van service at the airport here in Ubon.

Perhaps you read an old report of somebody getting one arranged with the casino when they were doing that.

Ok, I'm quite sure you are right.

I just did a search and see that the Ploy Palace hotel will pick you up from the airport, assuming you stay there of course, for 350 baht. so maybe I will do that and stay the night there as I would mantain that you won't get to the consult by 10.30 if flying out of bkk at 6am, even more so if there are no vans at the airport.

    Thanks for your help.

  6. I think you confused Udon Thani with Ubon Ratchaithani, There are vans from the Udon airport to the bridge in Nong Kai.

I would not try to fly into Ubon and try and make it in time to get the visa application submitted.

Only you only need the original of your marriage certificate and signed and dated copies of your wife's house book and ID card.

You name cannot be in a blue house book..

No, not confused. I read on here that someone got a flight to Ubon then got a van service from the airport to Mukdahan (spelt wrong no doubt) and he said it took around 2 hours.

I really can't see how I can be in Savanakhet (spelt wrong I'm sure) by 10.30 latest if I leave bkk same day?

  7. Thanks Joe, that's a bit more messing it around than I thought then The reason I mentioned to tae a van from the airport to the border is because somebody on here said that you can do that and even said that the last bus leaves at 7pm?

As I understand you have to be at the consult by 11am latest, so if I'm coming from bkk how can I realistically be at the consult by say 10.30? even a 6am flight from bkk may not get you there in time?

Just to confirm ref the docs, the only original they require is the marriage cert, my name won't be on my wifes blue house book, but they wouldn't expect it to, correct?

    Thanks.

  8. I wll be going to Savannakhet soon to get a NON 'O' based on marriage.

    A few questions as usual...

i think I'm clear on paperwork required, that seems straight forward enough. I am currently on a double entry toursist visa, I am on my second entry with takes me up to the end of July, with a 30 day extension this will take me up to the end of August, with this in mind does it matter when I go to apply for the visa, would anytime in August be ok?

I note that this is a 2 night stop over asuming I get to the consult first thing, would it make sense to spend both nights in Savannaket rather than 1 night in Mukdahan then changing hotels and having 1 night in Laos? Is this casino hotel Thai or Laos side?

Does anyone know if the new consult is open yet?

Finally, I will be using Ubon airport for this trip as that seems the best way in my mind, how or where do I pick the van up from in Mukdahan to take me back to the airport in the afternnon?

    Thanks.

  9. It would be less hassle for her to keep her own name, but it is not a major hassle if she changes her name. Let's not forget, most Thais do it on marriage, whether it is to a foreigner or Thai, so the system is geared up to make it relatively straightforward.

Keep the change of name cert safely stored and scan it to your hard disk - you will need it when it comes to visa applications etc

Yep, good point about Thais doing it anyway.

At what point would they receive a change of name cert?

  10. I am getting married soon and have been thinking about this myself. Is there an arguement that it's a lot less hassle just for your wife just to retain her own surname, after all a lot of woman keep their surnames now when gettng married?

When people say it's easy to do and it's just 10 minute trip to the amphur, but surely it can't be that simple? They have to change their passport, ID card, name in blue house book, bank accounts, insurance docs, etc...that seems likea big hassle to me!?

  11. Pat, thanks for that. I've just had an e-mail asking me to do exactly what they said yesterday, unplug router, plug back in, and restart computer. I'll tell them I've done it and still have a problem. See what happens. Agree with you, the UKTV platform is much better.

Incredible technical advise isn't it. Just keep on to them until you get it fixed. To be fair, I think thecustomer service is good in the respect that always they reply quickly and are always polite etc, but as said earlier they seem to be very reluctant to actually accept it may be a problem at their end.

  12. Still having problems and they're trying to blame it on my network and ISP. They even sent me a link to install Thai Expat TV as I have the UKTV platform and the subscription doesn't end until December. The Thai Expat link didn't work as every time I click on a channel, the program closes and it returns to the desktop! Waiting for a reply, though they'll probably still blame it on the network. Had no problems until the World Cup started....coincidence ?

I've had problems with the UKTV platform too the last few days.

They always play that card, ie blaming it on your network, PC, etc, the guy even suggested to me to uninstall my anti virus?? I just laughed that one of and had to bite my lip with that one, if it has always worked fine before ow how can it possibly be that the anti virus in now a problem? very strange logic, it can neve be there fault of course. I was also advised to download the new software too but told them I didn't want to do this and wanted to keep the old one as eveyone knows it is better.

By the way, if you do endup switching over it doesn't matter if you are paid up until December as they will honour that even if you switch over.

  13. IMHO KK is too far from Bkk, traffic too bad, and in general not that good to live in. It might be better to be in the BKK outskirts like Nontaburi or perhaps Pakchong between Saraburi and Korat.

Of course different strokes for different folks. I have lived several places in Thailand over the last 25 years and now I would never consider anything more than +/-2 hrs out of Bkk.

I really couldn't think of anything worse living in those places suggested. 30 mins flight to bkk from KK, 9 flights a day, but realistically with all the fluffing around 2 hours door to door.

  14. Hi Pat

I made the same journey you are about to make--about 7 years ago, after 6 years of the Pattaya Madness...... if you just go a little further north then KK to Udon Thani, I think you will like the town better, it is a very farang Friendly town --I do not mean to say that K.K. isn't, its just that Udon has a long history with Farangs, a lot of young Americans etc here in the 60s & 70s they married young Thai girls went back to the USA after the Viet conflict, & now a lot of them are returning for their retirement days. Because its quite near to the border there are other advantages (Lao Girls just being one of them)-- A lot of water front land just north, as it meets with the Mekong, & several other advantages that now I have sat down to write --I cant even think of...wub.png .......although K.K is slightly larger (population wise) the facilities in UT far exceed the ones in KK...IMO....(hope I don't upset anyone with that) K.K has one main shopping city mall--Udon has has 4. UT has 4 cinema complexes 24 cinema's (as well as a multi plex,) water parks, the Airport is the gateway to Lao, so you do get a lot of tourist coming through -- I like that, some may not. but it does mean that flights in & out of there to all over Thailand exceed anywhere else in the region ( over 20 flights a day to BKK & return alone with 5 airlines ) South You are just over an hour away from KK which has some great hospital, Udon has all the main Hospitals (the BKK / Pattaya group..etc) but KK probably has some of the best Hospitals in Thailand, because that's where some of the main teaching is. North-Your 45 minutes away from the border & the old town of Nong Kai, (old in that it has a lot of history & character)

Well that seems like a real good write up on UT---I should forward it to TOT--- but you can PM me if you are coming up, I'll show you around--I think we both originally come from the same little village on the Thames , although I left it half a century ago for a wander round & only got back for visits.

    Hi Sanuk,

Thanks for your post. I have been UT on several occassions and it is fine, but I (we) want to live in KK, not UT. Cheers.
