Drunk Russian topples statue of Phuket abbot, bungles lorry theft

PHUKET: -- A Russian tourist has blamed overindulgence in alcohol for a spree in which he pushed over a statue honoring a temple abbot in Karon late Tuesday night.

Oleg Fomenko, 31, was arrested at 9pm and taken to Karon Police Station for questioning on Thursday night after officers identified him through CCTV footage at Wat Karon (map here).

The video showed a man dressed in black pushing over a statue of Luang Por Kongdet, the resident abbot at Wat Karon, at 12:46am on Wednesday.

On seeing the footage, Mr Fomenko admitted that he was the man captured on screen, but said he could not remember anything about his antics that night.

“He claimed he was drunk and could not control himself, and that he couldn’t remember what he did,” Karon Police Superintendent Weerawat Jantarawichit told the Phuket Gazette.

Police believe Mr Fomenko was also responsible for using a crowbar to smash the window of a six-wheeled truck parked nearby.

“We think he is the same person who attempted to hotwire and steal the truck,” Col Weerawat said.

Officers located Mr Fomenko after scouring the neighborhood for a man matching the description in the video.

“Police questioned people in the area and learned that a man matching the description was believed to be staying in Soi Patak 18,” Col Weerawat said.

Officers moved in and arrested Mr Fomenko after he was spotted.

“Mr Oleg was charged with 'attempted theft at night' and with damaging private property,” Col Weerawat said.

Didn't the driver notice someone boarding the bus with an axe? Seems like it would be quite difficult to conceal in one's pocket. These assaults seem to be more and more frequent these days. It's a good thing I prefer driving myself and don't take busses or taxis anymore! All busses should require quality dash-cams and taxis should be required to have one too. This would help reducing these horrible acts since people are less likely to commit crimes and assaults when they know they're being watched.

How not to conduct yourself when you are behind bars here in Pattaya.

A bizarre story now from the Police Cells at the main Pattaya Police Station located on the corner of Soi 9 off of Pattaya Beach Road. The story begins at the Tops Supermarket in Central Pattaya when Mr. Barrett aged 50 from England was accused of assaulting somebody inside the Supermarket. He was arrested and taken to Pattaya Police Station where he remained in a calm state until he was sent to the first floor prison cell which is when he became extremely agitated, he began to shout profanities at other prisoners and tried to break out of the cell. He was also seen throwing things out of the cell. Police Sergeant Major Somsee who is responsible for inmates had enough and entered the cell block and attempted to calm Mr. Barrett down. The Sergeant Major decided to handcuff Mr. Barrett even though he was safely behind bars and this did the trick. He was later released after paying a small fine. We suggest to you that if you ever find yourself in a similar situation; remain calm as this sort of crazed behavior could hamper your chances of a quick release.

I've lived in Thailand since 1984 and hold a Thai ID card.

My father was Embassy staff, trust me all the things I mention are the things Thai's hate the most about the farang who come as tourists but a really immigrating.

Next time you correct a typo look at the message "not an attack" behind it.
