  1. Tramadol is a powerful painkiller. I was taking it in lower amounts after an operation and it blocked out any pain I was feeling. Pure relief from pain.

In my case ibuprofen provided no relief.

I mentioned this thread to a pharmacist friend and they suggested the OP be very careful of addiction to Tramadol due to the amounts they are taking.

In fact they were very surprised how much the OP was taking. :o

  2. You got the conversion right Crossy.

These big engines are great when carrying the usual overweight loads I see on the highways. I still wonder why the bottom layers of watermelons aren't squashed.

I drive the new ford ranger at work and the power from the new engine is noticeable over my previous 3 year old model ranger. On occasions i've towed loads nearly 3 times the towing limit of 800 KG and I only thing i notice is braking needs some careful planning. I will add I'm not driving on public roads.

  3. This says that 85% of the people tested in Patong are HIV+ !! This tells me two things:

    1. The testing method isn't accurate (highly likely)

    2. It's a bigger problem then imagined

As mentioned in my earlier post these figures will be high as the mobile clinics are used by high risk people who have family members or partners who are already HIV positive. The figures don’t give an accurate overall population percentage due to the type of patients these clinics target.

My source works for the health department in a different province and deals with mobile clinics and hospital statistics amongst other matters so I trust their advice.

    Edit spelling

  4. I have just googled as the OP suggested.

See no such reference to a Phuket Gazette

    article.

All the sick puppies are not in the sois.

    post-26562-1168964319.jpg

    From google search

"80% of mobile clinic users test HIV-positive

    Phuket Gazette, Thailand - Dec 28, 2006

PHUKET: Phuket Governor Niran Kalayanamit has ordered all government agencies to step up the battle against the spread of HIV, after some 80% of people who ..."

I have been told by someone in the health ministry that these figures are to be expected for mobile clinics. These mobile clinics are used by people with relatives who are already HIV positive.

  5. I asked a couple of the stall holders along Sukhumvit about them the other day. They all said they didn't know what the stickers meant but saw farangs placing the stickers.

My guess is a group of guys from Brisbane airport got hold of a few stickers and started tagging places around the globe.

  6. I’ve just stayed at Avana Hotel in Bangna. It’s a 20 minute, 70 Baht public taxi ride from the airport.

Rooms are about 1,000-1,500 Baht a night and clean. Free Pot Noodles, coffee, ovaltine and snacks provided in the rooms.

The hotel has a laundry, mini mart, coffee shop, traditional massage at 250B for an hour (400 for 2 hours) and a nice swimming pool.

Secon Square for shopping is 20 minutes taxi ride and On Nut BTS is about 30 minutes taxi ride.

The hotel has a minivan service to the airport for 150 Baht.

  7. hastings how can a issan farm girl get a position in a top bangkok university?and to get a job in a top hotel chain in bangkok they need a degree and speak english very well, did she tell you this,i suspect she learned her english from being a bar girl.

i am not having a go but not many issarn familys can afford or get a position in a top university.

Nev you may be interested to know that poor Issan farm girls can and do go to the top universities. They continue on to top jobs as well.

They get scholarships into Chula. I know a few who have been through this route including one who went on to a further scholarship in Australia.

  8. Fakes do appear in Thailand.

The drug companies are on to them and issue warning notices to the pharmacies as soon as fakes are identified.

If the pharmacy deals directly with the manufacturer or a reputable wholesaler they will never recieve fakes.

I currently have a warning notice for Myda-B antifungal and anti inflammatory cream.

  9. I’ve had all my wisdom teeth pulled.

The first 3 were done years ago by some heavy handed military butchers. They held me down and made me feel as if I was being decapitated. They managed to smash the teeth and it took a number of return visits for the chips to be removed. :D

My last wisdom tooth was pulled a year ago here in Thailand. It was a dentist friend of my wife at her clinic out near din dang.

The injections felt like my gums were being touched with a cotton bud, the extraction was so easy. She gently pried it and I felt no pain. :o

Best of all she charged me 200Baht to cover the injections. :D

  10. Sorry Frog I disagree

I've lived and worked in the middle east for near on 20 years and Greer's post is very accurate. I've been forced to witness some of the chops, my children when they were youngsters have been forced to the front to watch punishment being handed out.

It's the way of life out there. Changes in attitudes are happening albeit slowly and they will never match what we in the west think is correct.

  11. Jamie

America was one of the largest importers of Durian. Take a look in the Thai or Chinese grocery shops if you're in the US and you may find the fruit.

  12. There was a report on the TV just before midnight saying the fire had been burning for 3 hours and they were having trouble with access due top the small sois. They were expecting the building to collapse and people were trapped in an adjoining building.

  13. From phuket Gazette questions and answers

    Q. Can I drive abroad on a Thai license?

Is a Thai driving license accepted in the UK and other European countries, when hiring a car on holiday? If not, is it possible to get an international driving license in Thailand?

Friday, May 23, 2003 John Dalley

    A. “Thailand has an agreement with some countries, including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the US, that allows people to drive in those countries using Thai driving licenses.

Another option is to exchange your Thai driving license for one issued in the country where you want to drive. For full details of what options are available, you should contact the relevant embassy in Thailand.

Finally, many people who want to drive in a foreign country should obtain an Interntational Driving Permit before travelling. This permit, which is valid for one year, allows the holder to drive in any of at least 168 countries that signed the Convention on International Road Traffic of September 19, 1949.

International Driving Permits issued in Thailand are issued by the Department of Land Transportation (DLT). For more information, contact the DLT Bangkok office at 1032 Phaholyothin Rd, Lad Yao, Chatujak, BKK 10900. Tel/Fax: 02-272 3614-6. Website: http://dlt.motc.go.th”

From the Europcar.co.uk website terms and conditions for United Kingdom.

    Required Rental Qualifications

    Driver(s) personal qualification

Each driver must present a driving licence (both parts in the case of a 2 part UK driving licence) in her/his name valid in the country (driving licences in characters not readable in the country of rental must be accompanied by an International Driving Licence) held for a minimum period of time depending on local legislation or conditions; s(he) must also meet the age requirements in force in that country for the vehicle category considered.

    I hope this helps
