  1. How is the camera? Google was touting it at first, then backed off. I've read mixed reviews, mostly negative. That's why I haven't bought one. What's your experience?

It's garbage. Nothing more to say about it.

Here is a picture taken with a Nexus 5:

  2. Power Buy in Central Festival sells it for 16 900 THB. Also saw it in one of the smaller shops on the opposite side (dont remember the name, think it was next to Asia books) for 15 400 THB

Thanks for the info I'll go have a look! Could it be that one was the 16 GB and the other the 32 GB model? that would explain the price difference...

  3. I've saw it or the Thai LG version at the phone shop on the ground floor of Tuk Com next to the S&P cafe. Can't remember the price...maybe 16k or thereabouts.

Wow that's $150 US more than the US price!

Would it be cheaper to order it online and pay for the international shipping to Thailand? Has anyone tried it?

    Thanks again!

  4. Do you even understand what you wrote and what I said?

    Sent from a Nuclear Submarine.

Turning off internet access to help increase battery efficiency is like turning off the phone completely in order to save its battery: you can't use the main purpose of a smartphone without permanent internet access anymore. You could also switch to a 400-baht-feature-phone with a 3-weeks battery life instead, it's pretty much the same.

I didn't intend to be mean as I was honestly shocked by such suggestion, but after all maybe you should get out of your nuclear submarine and go to the open air a little...

  5. Hello

keep the wifi and data off unless you need them

    what?

keep the wifi and data off

    are you sure?

    unless you need them

if I wouldn't need wifi or mobile data, why would I have a smartphone?

keep the wifi and data off unless you need them

shock1.gifblink.png it just doesn't make any sense to say that when talking about a smartphone... What's the point of having a smartphone if you have NO INTERNET ACCESS??!

  6. Thanks all for all your great replies!

This is all good info. I will not use any porter or guide, I will go with a map and compass like I'm used to do in Europe cool.png And will carry the baby, food and water myself as well cowboy.gif (maybe even the wife too if she's tired shock1.gif just kidding), but no seriously, me and the mountains we need some privacy happy.png

I really want to avoid touristic areas as much as possible. From what I've read Everest is probably the most popular mountain and more generally all the Nepal area... in which case I think it'll be best to avoid for me and go for a less known part of the Himalaya... I'm really looking for silence, pure nature, stunning views, no people, no crowds, no guide, just silence and oxygen.

  7. Hello

I want to go for a 10 days holiday from April 10 to April 20 and I'm considering every option around Thailand. I want to go to somewhere extraordinary, not touristic, far from the population, and what's best than go hiking in the world's highest mountain?

I need some advice however... I don't need advice about hiking, but on the destination itself. I've never been there, the only mountains that I know are the Alpines and Pyrenees mountains.

Looks like it's extending through many countries and I have a lot of options: Nepal, India, China, etc.

What would be the best destination for a non-touristic but yet easy trip? I will travel with my wife and baby, and I'm not afraid of 8+ hours of walking/day. Again I don't need advice on hiking (I'm experimented), I'm really looking for information about the Himalayan mountains and easiest/cheapest approach from Thailand...

Thanks all for any kind answer!

  8. If anyone knows, I'll be happy to hear about it.

I tried to order it online from the truecorp website, but at the payment they refused my Kasikorn visa card. When I contacted them they said to contact Kasikorn, and when I contacted Kasikorn they said to contact TrueCorp, so after spending hours on the phone I just gave up and I'll give my money to somebody else! Why can't they just accept Paypal in thailand? online shopping is always so complicated/cumbersome/broken in this country!

  9. I've been with TOT for over 5 years now and up until recently have had a fairly good service ...but I have now changed/upgrade from a land line connect to a antenna connection with TOT ..it cost ฿1000 to buy , fitted and setup.I am now getting a 13 m for ฿690 and it has run for the last month without a hiccup ......you can get up to 20 m which is ฿1200.

Just go to the TOT office in Sattahip and ask for internet by antenna they'll know what you mean .But there is one girl who speaks very good English

just done a speed test it's now pinging at 12.83 m download and 1.06 upload.

    Hi,

I live in a Jomtien condo and internet sucks big time, I am interested in this "antenna" (wimax) solution, you say it costs 1000 bahts installation fee and then 690 bahts per month? is this with a 1-year contract or can you actually pay monthly and stop whenever you want?

    Thanks for the reply!

Also, any idea if it'd be available for a condo facing the sea? Thanks! Any link to their site much appreciated as I couldn't find this offer on their website.

How is the ping by the way? reliable enough for Skype calls?

  10. Hello,

I need to choose a simcard for my new tablet and I was hesitating between AIS (One-2-Call) and TrueMove H, are there any others?

I'm looking for a prepaid data plan, 3G or 4G (if available), it will be for a Nexus 7 4G LTE.

I'm posting in the Pattaya forum because it's very specific to Pattaya and Jomtien, I know that AIS has better coverage in Isaan but I'll use it mainly in Pattaya and Jomtien so I need a local advise.

I've visited both websites of AIS and TrueMoveH and compared their offers, but they don't seem to list all the available prepaid packages, maybe there are some more interesting ones that you wouldn't mind to share? Thanks!

  11. My Golden Retriever and I would miss our soi dogs because we say hello to them on our daily walks.
I don’t take taxis but would miss driving these wonderful northern roads.
I would miss the good workmanship on our house and the lack of garbage in our neighborhood.
I would miss that the only real bureaucracy I deal with is my yearly visa renewal, with that process being quite painless.
No comment on IT cafes because I have internet at home in the rice field and keep in touch with my iPhone when I am out and about.
Since I am not going anywhere after living here for 36 years, I don't spend much time thinking about such things.

"I would miss that the only real bureaucracy I deal with is my yearly visa renewal, with that process being quite painless."

Did you forget the 90 days report? or did you find a way to avoid it?

  12. There's also Bang Saray, about 15Km from Jomtien heading south, it's really nice but not so cheap.

I tried once to rent in a far away location, and I felt really lonely. I didn't mind to be isolated (I actually love nature and peaceful environments), but I didn't had any friends and was the only foreigner, making me feel really lonely. I couldn't bear it so I came back to Pattaya (i.e. Farangland) in a sec!!!

  13. Moved out of Park Lane a couple of months ago I could see what was going to happen my car was always covered in dust, and bought in Bang Chang on the beach no one can build my view out and the prices are far below Pattaya and Jontien prices a very quite and peaceful place to live without the crazy seasonal traffic and 30 mins to Rayong for the big shops

wow that's quite a big move!

don't you feel too lonely? are there any other foreigners where you live?

  14. Why buy in Pattaya? 3 months later somebody makes a new development for cheaper and the other places dont even have a decent occupancy level.

    Try somewhere new.

Hmmmm that makes sense but.... if that was true, how come rents aren't getting cheaper, and condos are full almost everywhere?

  15. I think the smallest are 60sqm 1-bed units. I looked at one that size a few weeks ago and they were talking about 30K/month but that seemed to be open to negotiation.

Who would pay that for 60sqm 1BR? I understand the view can be spectacular but still!
