I would like to see a balance sheet of what have been the pluses and minuses of three years of military dictatorship. It is apparent that there is much more public order but what else?
-
It seems that both sides of politics need to sit down and talk to devise a plan for governance with which they both agree, while still maintaining their differences of opinion, that can be sold to the Thai public as a viable alternative to the military dictatorship.

I am living solely on the Australian pension with no work permit. I had no trouble opening an account with Bangkok Bank which works just fine. I get my pension paid into my NAB (Australia) bank account and when I want to draw from it I simply take my passport and Aust. Visa debit card into my BB branch. I could withdraw from their ATM using the NAB debit card but they charge Bt 220, whereas there is no charge if cashing at the counter. I was doing on-line transfers from NAB to BB but found that (a) the fees were higher, (b) there was an overnight delay, or longer on weekends and holidays, whereas cash was immediate if going into the branch.

The Ministry of Commerce operates the "Department of Business Development" or DBD. There you register the name you want as well as two alternative substitutes. They check if the name is registered or not, if not then you can have it and must register it officially within 45 days - otherwise the name will be freed again. The whole thing goes at a nominal fee and can be done by yourself.
This is about registering a name and not the business (Co., Ltd. or Limited Partnership); that procedure is different and also costs fees according to the registered capital of the business.
If you're in Pattaya, the office is at GPS: 12.99747 100.92824, take ID along and some patience. More information on phone 1570 - or browse through their website at: http://www.dbd.go.th/dbdweb_en/main.php?filename=index
Thank you for this. It answers everything.

The question here is how to apply for a 'business name' as opposed to applying to register a business.

I would also like to know this

It's comforting to see America, the Leaders of the Free World, continuing their unswerving support for the great democracies - Saudi Arabia, Israel, Turkey, Egypt, to name a few.
-
All the government needs to do is pass a law that says the populace is obliged to 'like' (and not just accept) whatever Big Brother decrees but mustn't like other things or they risk going in the slammer. I am sure there is already a precedent for this.
-
The police and military should not be 'urged' to stop parading suspects. They should be 'ordered' to stop the practice or else.

You have missed the whole point of the article, those 'breaking the silence ' group of activists are
not PAL supporters but they're Israelis people who slander and rubbish the
sate of Israel and it's army while enjoying the protection of the democracy in Israel,
who would Germany will like it is Netanyahu will got to Germany and meet up with
Neo Nazis? would the German movement be ok with it?...
I would make two points (1) 'Democracy in Israel' is an Oxymoron.
(2) Netanhayu meets with his Neo Nazi associates on a daily basis in Israel - he doesn't need to go to Germany.

I have never heard of so many high dives from condos anywhere in the world as there are in Thailand. They are a regular occurrence. In Australia a balcony fall would be front page news for a week while here it is ho-hum. What is the explanation? Are they really suicides or are they assisted deaths?

Have you done any flips?
You are obviously experienced whereas most respondents on Thai Visa are inexperienced on any subject they comment on, so don't be put off by them. There is always a pool of Farangs here who have never operated a business in their life (or didn't do it right) who can't wait to shoot down any entrepreneurial ideas. But I would advise you to live here for a year or so and do your own research before jumping in off the deep end.

I am not looking to make any financial gain from this. I am just considering it as some insurance against being dudded by a Thai partner in whose name the business would be.

The farang could own the IP (intellectual property) of the trading name in another country and licence the name to the Thai to use here, for a fee. You' need the name to be registered in the other country and find a reason why the name couldn't just be registered here.
Look into international trademark laws.
Apple has an entity in Ireland that owns all its IP, that entity licences the use of the IP to Apple Corp in the US so they can legally transfer the bulk of their money to Ireland and pay less tax.
I'm structuring my company along similar lines.
Thanks for that but why couldn't I just register it in Thailand?
-
I feel sure all right minded readers would agree that this country needs less law and more order
-
Is it required or usual to register a Trading Name in Thailand (as opposed to just registering a business)? Could a Thai own the business but a Farang own the trading name?

Hi. Let's dispel some of this for the benefit of the unknowing and naive.. She didn't have a "job" today in reality, so tomorrow was always in doubt..If there are "many times more" girls looking for work in bars, how do you explain the appearance of many in same? I mean and ask, who is looking at them and doing the background checks, the drug test, the medical checks?..If she should "reimburse the bar" for lost profits, well we ask that old question, why do you need the bar in the first place? Can't she just "reimburse" you without the "bar"?...Making the "employees" responsible for the profits is "sound business" in what world? God Bless you Mate. Nice, but ti's all been said and said and said before. Not grounds for dismissal of the charges. Thank you again to the forum for allowing this concept to be brought to the surface and put in clear clean air for all to make their own decisions. Back to the OP and concept of taking real risks with your trusted partner.
She can 'reimburse' me without the bar but she won't find me without the bar, hence the bar has some rights.

I have a business plan .
But T-shirts for 100 Baht, sell them for 150 Baht
Sell 50 T-shrts everday and making 2500 per day profit
Thats 75 000 Baht per month , take away 15 000 Baht for rent
And you are left with 60 000 Baht per month profit
Open up three shops and you will be making 180 000 profit per month
The big weakness in your plan is will you be able to sell 50 per day? That's a lot unless you are in a prime location.

On the subject of buying a small business for a girlfriend it seems to me to be the lesser of two evils, provided a girl is worthy of your trust. The outlay can be minimal and can give her a sense of pride and purpose. The alternative is to be constantly shelling out money to meet her needs and those of her family, and her living an idle life with all the risks that that involves. Thai women are not afraid to put in long hours and hard work but they lack a sense of planning and order, which is where you may be able to help. Her business might become so successful that it can comfortably support the both of you. Don't be put off by the Knockers, most of whom have only ever worked for wages so don't know what they are talking about.

You can make those silly analogies and claims to a judge holding a gavel with charges sitting in front of him/her. ten years to life....The barfine is by definition coercive because she "can't" leave without it being paid...Ramp it up, add in underage, you'll get there mate. You might also google "indentured servitude" for proper context. Again, give it a go if you think it's worth ten plus years in a third world prison. The TV team isn't going to let our discussion go on much longer so God Bless You and OO. I thank them for allowing it this long.
She can leave without it being paid but she won't have that job tomorrow. It should be kept in mind that there are many times more applicants than vacancies in bars. From the bar's point of view she is employed there in order to bring in business. If she is absent then all bets are off. If she chooses not to be there during some business hours then she should reimburse the bar for what profits could have been made during that period. This is not a rip-off - it is just sound business.

I am confused by the US constantly claiming that Iran is the world's biggest sponsor of terrorism as it is never backed up by any examples. While they might be on opposite sides of the conflicts in Syria and Yemen that hardly makes them sponsors of terrorism.

Dear Government
If you must have laws then for God's sake, enforce them. Otherwise you merely create inconvenience, confusion, and corruption. If it's a sensible law, ENFORCE it - if it's not then get rid of it.

In the Nimmanhaemin area, arguable Chiang Mai's most up-market shopping area, the footpaths have been taken over by antiquated non functioning telephone boxes, large empty advertising signs embedded into the concrete, dead trees, parked motor bikes, and of course food vendors who treat the footpaths as their restaurants. Walking on the road, risking injury from vehicular traffic is the only option. Although high quality condos, hotels, and retail showrooms are going up at a dizzy pace in this area the civic authorities are doing absolutely nothing about footpaths, drainage etc. Whether this is because of a shortage of money (unlikely), no accountability, or corruption, whoever is responsible for this unacceptable disgrace should be immediately sacked, never again to be given a job in the public service, and if appropriate should face charges.
How to register for a business name in Thailand?

Can I, as a foreigner residing here without a work permit, register a business 'name' but my fiance is the registered owner of the actual business. I am thinking of this as some security for myself in the event of a break-up.
