  1. An average of 66 people a day die on Thailand's roads. That's six football teams wiped out. Every day.

70% of these are motorbike riders. To reduce these world class numbers all categories of motorbike rider need proper instruction, training, testing and licensing. Road Traffic Laws must be enforced. And common causes of accidents, especially overtaking on the inside, must be discouraged through education.

  2. Thailand seems increasingly determined to make tourists and foreign residents unwelcome.

Tourists pick up on this instantly and share the vibe via social media and word of mouth.

Tourist arrivals figures prove the point, even though TAT are in denial.

Foreign residents experience it daily amid the tyranny of TM30, 90 day reports, mandatory health insurance (impossible over a certain age), arbitrary alcohol laws, premium charges in parks and elsewhere, anarchy on the roads, seasonal burning, pollution and an erosion of democracy.

A word in their ear before the collapse of tourism and a general exodus?

  3. My Bianchi Vertigo road bike has been on its stand for the past few months following my ceramic double hip replacement to go with my titanium knee. I dare not tempt fate any further and so I want to sell it. It lives with me in Chiang Mai, has done very few miles and is in very good nick. Comes with bike stand, large standing pump and smaller bike pump. I can't upload an image for some reason.

  4. The bottom line is education. Import existing road safety tv commercials from ROSPA, the Royal Society for prevention of accidents, in the UK. Overdub the soundtrack in the Thai language and broadcast ad infinitum. Pick your topic: turning right; signalling; cutting corners; traffic lights; pedestrian crossings; courtesy; speed limits; riding a motorcycle; motorways; box junctions; seat belts, and so on. They all exist. They are all free. They are all shot driving on the left side of the road. They are ready to go. Sponsor? Probably Shell or Esso or an astute car manufacturer.

  5. I have tried but tvaddons.ag did not work for me, and expattelevision.com is just too complicated, involving dowloading Explorer which just seemed to complicate things. I am looking for the nearest equivalent to ExpatTV, UK channels with catch up if possible. I would like to hire someone to do this for me, who knows how to do it and has experience. Either a local professional or an amateur. Any takers? I'm in Chiang Mai.

  6. Since the demise of Thai Expat TV I am trying to find and install an alternative English language TV service provider. I would rather not return to True Visions. Is there anybody in Chiang Mai who can help with advice on the selection, and oversee the download and installation, of a new TV service provider in my home in Nong Hoi? Or who can recommend a professional IT guru who can do this? I am more than a little out of date with the technology and jargon.

  7. A young couple living in Singapore will visit me at the end of January for 3 or 4 days. They like "to get under the skin of places and want to see the true side of Chiang Mai, not just the touristy bits". Please suggest sights and destinations in and around Chiang Mai or slightly further afield, they might enjoy. All ideas gratefully received with thanks.
