I just sent a letter(containing only two sheets) from the U.S. to Pattaya on February 2nd.

Interesting that you mailed the letter on 2nd February but your comment was not posted until 16th February.  I send letters and small packages from Toronto, Canada and they usually take no longer than 10 days maximum to Bangkok.

  2. From the comments, it would appear that many of the writers are not familiar with Latin and put their own interpretation on the language.  The expression used by Rooster, "Annus Horribilis", has nothing to do with any part of the body, human or not.  In fact, it is translated into English as "The year is horrible", and both Queen Elizabeth and Rooster where correct when using that expression.

No women allowed in this store in 4" spiked heals please. They'll sink into the cheap tiles and leave many divets.

I will probably be castigated for my comment but I hope you are not teaching the English language because there are three errors in your comment, i.e. heels not heals, divots not divets, and a divot is a piece of turf cut out by a club when making a stroke.  Maybe you do not play golf though so would not know that.

  4. Two people handling food even though they have skin without gloves, two people handling food while wearing gloves, none wearing a mask is something the Minister of Health should be told about this because he wants us to be forced to leave if not wearing a mask.  Also, in his rant, he mentioned that he has many farang friends and likes them.  That is a throwback to, "I have many black, Jewish, Chinese, German, etc., friends".

In conclusion, if there is any food left over why is it not turned into compost, or is that not done by Thais.

  5. There was an article a while back in which Thai Airways said that the seats in Business Class on their new aircraft, sorry, but cannot remember which plane they were talking about, were reduced in size over previous Business Class seats.  Therefore, all the staff had to do was show the regulation and then there would be no further need for the passengers to argue or complain.

To answer the question by other poster concerning how the three females arrived in Thailand, I have to inform you that you are all wrong.  They had hired the Antonov An-225 which is the world`s heaviest aircraft and has a maximum takeoff weight greater than 640 tons.  There's only one of them.

who's paying for the hospital treatment for all the confirmed and potential coronavirus patients from China who have been staying in various private and public Thai hospitals for treatment and testing?

Throughout this entire process, thus far, I haven't seen one peep about the financials for all of their treatment, and all those who will require it in the future.

Maybe it is the responsibility of the Thai government now that Non Immigrant O-A Visa holders from western countries must have insurance so if they get hurt and get treatment at a hospital they cannot not make payment.  Remember, supposedly, we are the people responsible for the outstanding burden of debt that has made Thai hospitals flounder in debt.  Also, we owed the money to hospitals because we would get treatment and leave the country without making payment.  (That was a bunch of untruths, in the main, anyway, as far as I know, although it did happen and was usually performed by short time tourists from many countries.)  How does that fare for the Chinese with this virus?

  7. They quoted numbers of food trucks in Thailand but after all of my time in the country I never saw one but there were a large number of food stalls.  Do they count?  In fact, I have a better idea.  Why not have this display at one of the airports in BKK so that passengers leaving and or entering the country can  get a food package to eat while waiting for their plane or to eat in the taxi/bus as they go to their residence?

Thaivisa notes that online information suggests that TB is not all that easy to catch and infected people must be "clinically active" to pass it on.

John Henry "Doc" Holliday, associate/friend to Wyatt Earp, had TB before he became a dentist and he died in a TB sanitarium.  Wonder if he would fit into that category due to the primitive state of the technology, public and personal hygiene of bygone days?  They didn't wear masks unless they were "outlaws" holding up bank, stage coaches, and trains and what they wore, if anything, was a neckerchief full of dust and sweat, etc.

Try telling those who died and were not "clinically active" that TB is/was not easy to catch and very often the information on Thaivisa is incorrect.

Why doesn't this Thai character become a time traveller in order to find out what it used to be like in the past, or maybe do some in-depth research before opening his mouth to spew his saliva all over the people around him because those paper masks do absolutely nothing to defend against the transmission of disease(s) or even filter out pollution especially at the levels or types in Thailand.

  9. I will probably get slammed for this but instead of requesting information as you did, why not try going to a dietitian or nutritionist?  Incidentally, many of the suggested foods are not the best for weight reduction.  White rice has no nutrition as it is processed to remove all things beneficial to our diets as is white flour.  Brown rice and whole grain products are far superior and eat smaller amounts.  Get professional help not that from amateurs as generally they have no idea what they are talking about as they do not have the knowledge and have not conducted any research.  Keep away from diets of every kind except those recommended by professionals.  Even doctors are not the best to give advice.

  10. The masks that are usually sold at 7/11, drug stores, etc., are not for N95.  For that level of protection something like a Cambridge - either 95 or preferably 100 level masks - is required.  Many people believe the so called surgical masks are satisfactory and will suffice.  They will not as they do not have the correct materials to remove particulates at the 95 and above levels, nor indeed for lower levels, as they tend to be made out of paper.  Surgeons wear masks mainly to prevent sweat, saliva, and mucus (nasal dri(o)ppings) from dropping into where they are performing surgery.  Don't skimp buy the best possible not 100 cheapies

Make no mistake. Thailand are super good at "numbers". So good that the virus can simply not spread here. And also you underestimate the power of amulets.

Also, didn't whats his face recently say that Thailand is safe from coronavirus, and that directly before the number of reportedly infected people was announced.  That was about the time he reported that there was no major pollution problem.  I agreed with that because he live, works, and travels in an air-conditioned environment.

  12. It would seem that my experiences of lending money to Thais contradicts the stories portrayed in the comments section.  Having befriended many Thais, a few have asked me in private if I could loan them funds for various reasons.  Each time, the person seeking the loan and myself have sat down and discussed the reason(s) and the situation(s) for the request.  When a loan has been given there has never been any paperwork, only a handshake.  Always, the money has been repaid without any attempt to make excuses why it has not been, or could not be repaid.  Would I make a loan again?  Yes, but only after due discussion and deliberation.  Some of my loans have been in the several thousands of Baht.  No problem.

  13. The use of gel has become a popular replacement for using soap and water.  According to many research studies, the gels should not be employed as they can enter the body through the skin and do not remove as many bacteria strains as do soap and water.  In Canada, although still used, a lot of medical facilities are abandoning their use for that reason.  Also, the masks worn by the IO in the photograph are ineffective.  All they may do is prevent sweat and nasal and mouth liquids from falling onto people.  They do not prevent a person from breathing in airborne materials such as a virus and only have minimal use for preventing the person from breathing in the contents of the polluted air.  That requires a very different type of mask which filters the air to prevent contamination by air particulates.  Found out both sets of information when in the Royal Navy.

    Until the no-fail policies endure

Is there a slight problem within this section of your sentence?  Possible it should read, "Until the no-fail policies fail, or are removed..."

Contradictory to numerous comments, I have met and know a lot of Thais who speak English better than a lot of the so-called native English speaking "teachers" who often have no other qualification(s) than they have a degree and are "native " speakers of English.  With regard to the issue of accents and dialects, etc., take somebody from one part of England and drop that person into a part of the country they are not familiar with and see how they fare using the language, often shabbily.

  15. One of the best on the market, although a bit pricey is the Cambridge Mask from England.  They make both the PM 99 and PM 95 masks for the public for which the face must be measured so that the correct fit is made, but they also produce for military around the world.  They have an agent in Thailand (web site - BreatheThai.com).  Both sell for 1070 Thb from them, plus shipping. Unfortunately, at the moment they are sold out.  Can be checked through Google.  The regular "masks" sold in places like 7-11 and drug stores are not worth the money as they only assist in preventing the spread of coughs and sneezes but are no protection from airborne problems due to there not having any real substance except maybe a thin layer of cotton to stop a person from breathing in the air although they may stop some of the dust.  Remember, though, the particles currently being experienced enter the lungs and can get into the bloodstream.
