  1. there are dozens and dozens of paper shops all over C.M. many are to be found in the vicinity of the universities and are much, much cheaper than some of the big names mentioned - by 30% or thereabouts. some that look like holes in the wall have incredible stocks piled high to the ceiling. one of my favorites is down the street from the train station on the R side. another is in Chang Phueak near Thannin market. i would suggest you pick yourself up some kind of guide to C.M. as it seems you often are asking where to find this and that. it's not a criticism so please don't take it that way, but it would make your life much easier.

    thanks for the info.

is there a guide you'd recommend?

also, i already found a listing for the stationary shop near thanin market you mentioned, including an address and GPS location on google maps, but still couldn't find it yesterday. perhaps the shopfront was closed up for some reason. can you describe it and its location in detail?

  2. Anyone know of a decent stationary shop? Looking for selection that goes beyond printer paper and standard envelopes.

Also looking for packaging, for shipping small items such as jewellery. Do they have this at the post offices around town?

  3. Its all Limestone around here, Not sure if you really want to be doing trad in that. . but that is your personal call.

There are hundreds of clean pristine sport routes here

    http://www.mountainproject.com/v/crazy-horse-general-area/106579963

and another hundred unlisted and chossed up at up around Chaing Dao and some in Lampang..

Im out of the area for a few months, but you can find partners by asking around at the climbing wall here https://www.facebook.com/ClimbNoGravity

or at the CMRCA gym in the old city. http://www.thailandclimbing.com/bouldering-wall/ (they have a gear shop there too)

if you really are set on doing trad in limestone, then, there are some awesome untouched multi pitch lines waiting for a FA up around soopong, if you are on a mission

drop a PM and I will tell you where to look.

    Outstanding, thanks mate.

  4. i'm struggling to buy a copy of Office (i'd settle for PowerPoint) online here, since i get routed to a thai-language version of the microsoft store. if i try the UK version of the store i seem to need a UK billing address.

i'd be happy to buy a copy from a shop here, legitimate or otherwise.

    any suggestiongs?

  5. I'd suggest walking up and down Soi 5, 7, 9 and 11 and have a look at all the places. My favorites are on Soi 11 (Beer Republic and Why Not Mediterranean restaurant.)

Soi 5 has a higher end Japanese restaurant one full block east of Nimmen (can't remember the name) but every block has something.

It's a small area so walking around these sois will not take long.

    cheers, good info

  6. We too, buy our sheets from Central. They are very high-quality 600 thread count 100% cotton. The last set we bought are beautiful - made in Japan. We got them at the "70% sale". Marked down from 6900 THB to about 2,000 THB. The 2 sets we had before that (also from Central) lasted almost 5 years. The set we bought at the Thai shop in Kad Luang for the guest bedroom lasted about a year before they disintegrated.

Cheers, sounds worth checking out, although we're only staying for about a year so as long as they feel nice (are cotton) we'd probably go for the cheap versions--unless there's a similar sale to the one you mentioned above. In any case, Central's not hard to get to and worth a browse for other things as well.

  7. Pinging this again just in case anyone has some feedback about how to actually find a cleaner. Twice a week would be OK as well if that's what it takes.

Sort of made friends with a local shop owner recently. Maybe he could put the word out in our neighborhood as well.

  8. Have you bought flat sheets there? I heard Central mentioned but no-one was being very specific...

I saw some in Bangkok for the same as what you'd pay in the west (which is Ok if that's the only option). Is that what you find at central?

  9. "Tampons contain two things that are potentially harmful: Rayon (for absorbency),and dioxin (a chemical used in bleaching the products)."

    Source

So your source is some space cadet folk singer?

Glad one of us went there.

I considered describing in detail what life without tampons is like for my wife but good judgement prevailed.

  10. Get serious - you must have searched carefully. Local 7-11 has 7 varieties. In stock. Today.

weird. we tried one 7-11 so far--only panty liners or whatever you call them. tried 3 small pharmacies in various locations and the nearest tesco. have you seen them in more than one 7-11?

  11. Hehe... we just unpacked ours to discover they're synthetic, not cotton. Oops--we didn't even think to check. Do you remember what part of the 2nd floor your shop was on? Was it near anything I'd recognize there? Might be worth going back for a cotton set and using these as the standbys when we're doing the wash. Otherwise we'll bite the bullet and order stuff from the west online.

In terms of how long things last: I llive in Thailand, am part of an Asian shopping demographic now and have the appropriate expectations where price and durability are concerned ;)

  12. odd question, but for some reason we can't find any in the pharmacies we've checked, nor in Tesco on the superhighway close to where we live. do we need to go to some big farang-style shopping mall pharmacy or something?

  13. I had a pleasant couple of hours exploring around Warawot market, and my landlady suggested I try the 2nd floor.

People there were very helpful in spite of my almost total lack of Thai. I explained that I was looking for King size sheets, fitted and flat, light summer weight cotton.

Within seconds I had a packet of flat sheet and two pillow cases and a packet of fitted sheet and another two pillow cases.

Asking price was 1500baht the lot. I thought I'd get a second quote before deciding, and the price was dropped to 1000baht!

Done. They're now washed and on the line, looks just the job. Material made in the USA says the box, a cotton / polyester mix. They'll dry quickly in the wet season. Snug, Egyptian cotton flannelette sheets will be used again when it turns cold...

Thanks for the advice and help everyone.

thanks to you for the post, masuk. we just got back ourselves with very similar cargo and are happy to finally have what we want. in matching colours, no less. took a bit of looking and asking but there were two (probaly more) vendors that had a few to choose from of various sizes. random bonus: best mango sticky rice we ever had half a block down on the way home.

  14. Flats are not part of the local bedding vocabulary. The place near the Chinese temple at Warorot will make some for you in a couple of days.

    Where's warorot? Google coordinates?

  15. What type of activities are you interested in? There are running, biking, and hiking groups, as well as others.

She's mainly a jeweller but also photography/visual arts. We're both pretty outdoorsy, though she's less into hiking. We'd be up for softball and the like if the group is fun and not too serious about it--we've never swung a bat in our lives. I'm into rock climbing, martial arts and I write in my spare time. Pretty much up for anything.
