  2. Between us, my wife and I have 2 iphones and an ipad. I've been doing prepaid top-ups on AIS sims but the 3G is getting a bit pricey. I've heard there are great monthly prices for unlimited data.

I'm guessing I need to I hunt down a shop somewhere to sign up and show paperwork. I'm in Chang Phueak--any recommendations on where to go?

  3. ^^ Sure, if you don't know what you're doing, but what a load of old b****x! Done well over 100k and I'm much happier on a bike. Also owned a car here which is all about stress.

I'd simply buy a new one, op, and negotiate with dealer for a buy-back. Don't worry about maintenance, these things run and run and where the newer CVT (twist 'n gos) are concerned, they'll just need the oil changing ever six months or so... anywhere (Honda or Yamaha) will easily sort that for 200 notes, just sit back and have a coffee.

Hadn't considered this. What kind of buy back could I expect after one or two years?

  4. Looks like the bike my landlord wants to sell me is less road-worthy than we thought. What kind of prices can I expect for daily/monthly rental, and do the shops come and fix it if it breaks down? I know nothing about them and I'd need a fully automatic since I'm sharing with my wife. Cheap and weak... About half a CC would be fine.

Buying new/used isn't out of the question either--we're here at least a year--but I like the idea of someone else looking after it.

Anyone know a good place in Chang Phueak to go?

  5. Pickles is open and thier smoked beef tongue sandwiches are the best in CM! There's also a good salad restaurant around the corner. Tanin Market has lots of stuff and thier to go food is real good but the food court in back is not esp. good. Hillkoff is real good, if you brew drip coffee at home try thier City blend (also called Mocha but it's not mocha)

Agree with good food at this market. We also get food to take home from the market. Just recently, we took home some very good soups- tam yum gai and yam gin gai from a vendor at the back. There is a vendor in the middle where we get some very good dishes - phat phet pladuk, various veggie some with meat, etc. We also buy miang kham packs there. If you haven't had these, it is worth a try... To eat, you take a leaf put the sauce, coconut flakes, peanut, lime, chili, dried shrimp, shallot in the middle, wrap everything up and put it in your mouth. Delicious burst of flavor and it is great. We normally add the pickled garlic slices. We think it goes well with a dry martini (gin, stirred).

Wow, miang kham sounds incredible. Anywhere noobs can go where they serve it? Or is that not a thing...

  6. i just had an eye problem sorted out at Ram hospital--our first medical experience in Chiang Mai--and am now officially in love with private Thai health care. i'm not sure what to do for ongoing coverage, however. if anything serious happens--including, possibly, having a kid here with my fellow expat wife--i can see expenses mounting very quickly.

do people maintain foreign health insurance as "traveller's insurance" while they're staying here? are there any reasonable local medical insurance plans available to expacts without residency visas? we should be on educational visas by the end of next month.

  7. if its just mail checking, web browsing, facebook etc tot is okay. im staying in chang phueak area as well.

however if you are looking for decent latency in gaming, (even in SEA servers) tot is totally messed up. if you trade forex, stocks etc online, you are gonna face some problems. the upload speed of tot is just erratic, you will find problems opening a new order even on a basic mt4 platform. it is near impossible to do scalp trades

i had been on tot, 3bb and true, both 3bb and true are okay, im on 3bb fttx now, no complains on gaming, tradings. torrent speed wise, im nt too sure about that

went to the True Online shop near Chiang Mai Uni today and sadly, there isn't fibre available for my particular area of Chang Phueak. ended up taking a typical ADSL package (10mb) for 600 baht a month including installation and modem/router. they seem pretty organized--sent me a text telling me when the tech would arrive to install it 10 minutes after i left. he's coming over in 2 days. had to sign a 12-month contract, but somehow i'm not too worried. i suppose i could have gone to a 3bb shop as well and asked there, but i'm assuming the providers all use the same fibre trunks.

  8. We also ended up with a home owned and maintained by a retired American guy who's attention to detail and standards of upkeep are incredible. I can tell he's going to be a great landlord and is already going out of his way to help us enjoy the area.

Foreign CONTROLLED rentals (foreigners can't own houses by the way) are usually the most expensive types.

But Thai owned rentals are cheaper as the landlord normally repairs nothing, you have to DIY (usually repairs are very cheap).

yep, his wife is thai and both their names are on the lease.

if all you vets promise not to laugh at me, i'll invite you to my over-priced home for coffee and you can teach me how to say "sucker" in Thai. i'm betting it's "farang"...

thanks man, that's really helpful. is 3bb fttx adsl-based?

as long as torrents work, slower speeds are fine. video skype is our benchmark--if that's good, we're happy.

  10. If the agent is so good ..... why not tell us what you got and how much it cost?

Usually agents are twice as expensive as finding a place yourself.

C'mon, we all like a good laugh at the noobs.

    PS, after a quick browse

This property they advertise at 15k/month would normally rent privately in the 4-7k region.

lol... then I deffinitely won't tell you what we paid. I guess the bottom line for us was that Sandy found us something great within our budget and was very professional and easy to deal with. I can see how, if we're still living here after our first year is up and we're better connected with the local goings on, we might try and bypass the agents entirely. I can't see how we could have done that at this stage though, being complete CM virgins with no Thai language skills at all.

  11. Their web site is a hell of an improvement on old one...and many more properties listed. Many however did seem to be cut and paste photos from other sites (including forum sponsors).

Always found them a tad expensive compared to others for same properties, (and as a given travelling round and asking the odd person is always cheaper again)...but if they have solved you housing issues, and done a good job by you all power to them.

Any how...if nothing else, and in relation to the new updated web site being a work under progress I did get a little chuckle at this in the "Announcement" section :

    1.ChiangMaiHOUSE new version

Chiangmaihouse.com New Version is developing. Some sections will be finished in next coup...

One thing I really appreciated about their website was the ability to add a search filter that included "city or within the superhighway". Most other sites made it almost impossible to search for "very near the city".

Walking around and looking for signs and tips from people is definitely best, but we don't speak or read Thai and didn't find any farang who knew places. Apartments all cater to farang but we found houses much more difficult to find on our own.

  12. We're not in Chiang Mai per se, and have found getting a reliable service a bit difficult. Most companies BBB, TOT aren't available in our area. AIS had a plug in WiFi that went through sim cards in 2 days. I find tethering my cell to one of our computers works fine for most internet activities and works better in the rain than the True antenna we have for TV. Cell phone with unlimited internet and talk costs 350 baht and I know there are cheaper sources. I can watch movies and US TV shows but it takes a few minutes to get them going right, and it's faster than the AIS plug in

Wow, that's cheap 3G. Clearly I need to get off prepaid AIS topups and get onto a contract.

  13. Just recently signed a 12-month rental contract after a fair bit of online hunting around and a few visits in person. I contacted 10 different realtors directly by email and one stood out by far. After we visited her office she found us a great place in only one day.

Sandy at Chiang Mai House (http://www.chiangmaihouse.com, [email protected]).

Sandy's English is impeccable, she's very responsive and only recommended places that fit our specific needs. She's also a delightful person.

It's worth a visit to the office--there are new listings all the time that aren't yet on the website or are hard to find amidst the hundreds of properties and we found things happened quickly and easily once we were face to face.

  14. We don't live right there, but frequent the area. (Please look at the pinned topic "Google Map for Chiang Mai". )

    • Tannin Market = north of Hotel Mercure is a good local market where you can get produce/meat to cook as well as get cooked food to take home. There is a food court out the back and across the street, but I've only been there a couple of times and can't think of a recommendation.
    • Top Supermarket - is located next to the Hotel Mercure. I don't shop here much, but will shop at Top in an emergency.
    • I don't know if the Pickles Deli (not on the map) is still opened or not, but that was one place I wanted to try (just never in that area at the right time). People raved about the corned beef, etc.
    • Hillkoff Coffee (on Chang Phuek Soi 2 and main branch East) has roasted coffee beans (you can ask them to grind for you). They have various brewing equipment from espresso machines to French presses, etc. Also, they have coffee grinders as well as green beans if you are into roasting (there is more at the main branch).
    • Kitti Electronics (not on map) - it is on a corner and on Chiang Phuek right near the sign for the Lotus Hotel. Many electronic components, boxes, soldering irons, wires, some audio connectors.
    Have fun discovering stuff.

Thanks! I'll let you know about Pickles :)

  15. Good place across from the rail station in the grounds of (and owned by) boss hotel. I think prices most places are pretty similar from having looked around.

Another near PP condo not far from station too, and one a bit out beyond Nong Hoi/mahidol junction with a thai man and Brit wife-who fights too!, .

Do you know the names of any if these? Have you used any?

Been to them all to check out for my son, and chatted to owners, trainers and coaches. Why not just do the same ? The first two are easy to find, once you find the station and PP condo, the Nong Hoi one is behind the international school on Mahidol. Get close, then ask-no problem.

-Thai Boxing training centre, Bossotel, station :0870029806

    -Chay Yai, 30/17 Sunpaliang,Nong Hoi 0833011469

    Thanks mate

  16. have a look at this place http://lannamuaythai.com/ - not far from Phucome hotel.

my son did lessons there and had a very good teacher. one of the owners is a foreigner so language should not be a major issue

Most gyms I'm finding advertise themselves as camps and have training twice a day. I thought at first the lessons would be open/appropriate to more casual trainees but I'm guessing now this isn't the case.

Lana Muay Thai seems that way. Is that the case?
