  1. I put a couple of rigs in the water there several years ago. Just off Angola but had to transit from the Congo. The shittiest and most scary place I have ever been. When around 20 of us got demanned we took the boat back to shore only for the Heerema rep to tell us he only had 2 flights. Ended up in a resort for 2 weeks on full pay and just sign for everything which was a bonus.

The flight from port Noir was also a story in itself whistling.gif

  2. The best diving will be a liveaboard in the Similans or perhaps over towards Nicobar. But not sure a 7 year old would enjoy that. There's lots of diving opportunities in Phuket. So I wouldn't discount that so quickly. Koh Tao is another popular spot.

Let's let this run here a bit and then we can move it over to the diving forum for more help!

Why would any one with or without a family go to Koh Tao?

Its still a beautiful island with very good and affordable diving with lots for the kids to do as well. Not as hectic as Phuket. There are some nice resorts that are aimed at families.

Last month in London over one weekend 10 people were either stabbed or shot. That won't stop London being one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

Yes what happened on Koh tao was horrendous but this is a rarity there thankfully.

  3. I used to go to the Samui prison once a month and take some food, books and old DVD's. You just need a name of someone in there. I am sure there are charities that organise visits or try the embassy.

regardless of why they are inside it isn't very nice and any help is greatly appreciated by all.

Sometimes its nice to be nice as the wife says.thumbsup.gif

  4. The same and far worse happens every weekend in every town or city in the UK. Samui is no different and i would say if anything safer. I can only presume Australians don't get drunk and fight ever ?

You are correct, an assualt can happen anywhere in the world. The story is in the treatment of the victim and family after the crime had taken place. As for your sweeping generalzations about Australians and the UK, yes the guy was from Australia that does not mean he is a 'hard drinking Auzzy battler' be careful with sterotypes lest you become one.

The UK does have a major problem with drunken violence but has good policing and care for a victim. The lack sympathy on this site amazes me.

Could you point out the " sweeping generalization " about australians in my post please ? The statement about the UK is FACT not generalization. I also think that the letter to the samui times reads like a " what not to do in the event of an accident " Nobody that was with this man could organise getting the guy to hospital ?
