The statement that the PM is "directly in charge of the RTP" is not technically or functionally true, to my understanding of the structure. The military and the RTP in the history of the country have always been separate and competing institutions. Of course Prayut is in a sense now government and not military, but that doesn't change anything. And of course he has influence, but then to do anything he would have to start thinking outside the cultural box, which doesn't seem his strong point.
The head of the police reports directly to Prayut who is the minister responsible in addition to being the PM. I think he made this change after the election.

To leave in 2-3 years from now. Thai wife and I are in agreement this is no place to grow old in.

Man up and get rid of her. Your sound like a doormat.

Up here in a rural northern location it is easy to see a marked increase (from zero previously actually) of younger folks lingering about, sitting on motorbikes, not doing anything but talk and stare at mobiles. Every day I'm out (and that is only a couple of times a week now) I see groups in the same places and recognize many by the bikes and clothes. They weren't there last year. Everyone has family members returned from Bangkok and surrounds with next to nothing and surviving on family help and a little casual farm work. Extrapolating what I see here tells me the figure is already well into the millions. And petty crime is increasing.

Yes. We've placed our property on the market and will head to Australia. The wife already has a permanent visa to live and work there, plus medical coverage. We are not in that much of a rush as it may well take a year or two to sell at the amount we want. We'll continue with the homestay business until then although at the moment we've closed it till end September, likely only be a handful of guest group stays for the remainder of the year (if we are lucky). We don't rely on it for income and feel very much for tourism operators that do. Expecting maybe half will not reopen in our locality.

Used to see a pair of medium sized eagles riding the air waves/thermals coming off the ridge we live on in northern Nan province. Saw them occasionally for about three years including the first two living in our new house. Haven't seen them this year though.

This is nothing. IMHO the Embassey made a far larger misstep with a certain video earlier this year.

I graduated HS with about 25 others nearly 45 years ago. What surprises me is how little I can find of them on the internet. I have definitely found two and suspect I know where another two are (both doctors coincidentally). Suffice to say I've never met up with any since the week we all signed out of school. And unlikely to ever try. Got on well with many of them during school days but don't feel the need to reprise.

Did ours yesterday. Wife pretty much decided to close her homestay for a month or so and we'll just hibernate.

The Sherriff, from my rugby league playing days on the north coast of NSW Australia. Inspiration apparently came from the sherriff character in Dukes of Hazzard.

Wake me when they've measured growth against pre-COVID times.

I'm yet to see one. Compliance in upper Nan province has been really exceptional in my eyes.

Based purely on environment factors (it's sinking and the sea is rising), I would not buy in Bangkok.

I gave the equivalent of 400,000 baht in cash and gold for my degree qualified nurse, never married, but had had a long term Thai boyfriend previously. She was 32 when we married. Her parents paid for the wedding and my wife allowed then to keep any wedding gift cash. At the time we married my MIL told my wife she would return the cash and gold if we ever decided to live in Thailand and she did.

Using garlic was out there and the slightest hint of the fragrance in your house or breathe was social disaster.

We are having a little issue with our PEA meter at the moment. Noticed early in May it was at 11,999, took a photo to commemorate it nearly ticking over to 12,000. Got the account notice on the 21st and thought it was a bit low. Wife pointed out end reading was still 11,999. Went to the meter and confirmed it had not moved for a couple of weeks. The wife made a call and got a PEA number to report the meter which she did. Still not fixed and still stuck at 11,999. Call me paranoid but I decided to get more photos displaying date/time stamp and showing glass and seals intact so there would be no accusation of tampering. We are going to go to the local PEA office later in the week and once again report it is not reading. In the meantime it has been hot and we decided to take advantage of the meter not working. Fully expect there will need to be some adjusted payment once it is all sorted but it is likely to be at a lower rate than our current consumption which is higher since we are running the air-con 12 hours a day.

My answer twenty years ago would have been different but now, no.

Are you now talking to yourself?
To reiterate, you have "judged" the risk to yourself and wife as being minimal since you presumably are taking precautions - that's sensible and proper to take precautions. However, you're "waiting" on studies about the vaccine while ignoring the basic and obvious evidence that is all around you. So you're basically comparing the risk of getting COVID-19 and having a really bad outcome (death or long-hauler) to the risk of the vaccine causing a really bad outcome (blood clotting or some other side-effect causing death or stroke or other long-term negative health problem).
Hence my comment, you are comparing risks that are several different orders of magnitude as if they are somewhat similar - they're not. Your chances of getting COVID-19 are far far far far higher than any potential side-effect from the vaccine, and if you get COVID-19 your chances of a major negative outcome are far far far far higher than if you get a side-effect from the vaccine. So you're exposing yourself and your wife, as well as any others you come across to potentially life-threatening risk to avoid a risk that's less likely than being struck by lightning. You seem to be spending a lot of effort justifying your non-sensical and misguided analysis of my original statement. Back to kindy son.

Potentially "famous last words" - you clearly don't understand risk. I hope you are able to survive the consequences of your lack of mathematical and scientific acumen.
Might be best if you refrained from posting when not lucid. Or perhaps take time first to read and understand a comment. Remember, brain in gear before opening mouth.

I'd prefer to wait if I have a choice and judge the risk of doing so is not too high to myself and wife. In any case looks like there will not be a decision needed till 4Q21 so plenty of time to mull. By then there should be several credible studies available to judge the performance and side effects of most of the candidate vaccines.

Well the Thai wife was kind enough to live with me in Singapore, Dubai, Brisbane and Phoenix so we decided we would give northern Thailand a go for initial retirement. Been here three years now but for multiple reasons we no longer see Thailand as a medium, let alone long term option to grow old in. We'll head to Australia in 2-4 years.

Took 10-15 years in Australia, started in the early 70s.

Well in the last two years I've only transferred over 200,000 baht per annum. The wife has an investment that nets her 30,000 a year and her homestay has a handy net profit (when not shutdown due to COVID). I'd say we live quite okay on about 450,000 baht per annum. No debts, no drinking/smoking/gambling, wife owns the land/house/business, 1 car, 1 wife and 2 Labs. We live in a remote rural northern location. She hasn't been out of the province for the last two years and I've only had two day trips out over the same period. Our days of international work/living/travelling are done and we are not missing it.

Put glasses half full of water, add a teaspoon of dishwashing soap and vinegar to it.
Top it off with cellophane and make a few holes in it with a toothpick.

Have had good success with honey in the water instead of vinegar. Might try vinegar next time.

Wife was unable to use the app to pay this month. So on Wednesday we drove to the office and paid cash over the counter. TiT.
