  1. Sorry, did not expect it to go on for so long. Have read all the comments (thanks to all). Opinions seem to be split 50/50, one persons idea of cheap is another persons idea of extravagance. My original thoughts were more about the pressure/loss of face that the term can cause. I titled it "Cheap Charlie" but maybe I should of titled it "Kiniow":because I was more interested in a Thai general life perspective than a ferang/Thai perspective. But I have enjoyed and taken note of the various replies.

  2. As I recall the biggest expence for my marriage was the British Embassy. My Father inlaw questioned sinsod a few years later to which I replied "your daughter has been married once before, how many times can you expect to be paid?" He does quite well out of me by the way which I am fine with but no marriage payment.

  3. Robby nz, I am talking general life but I know what you mean. My sister and her husband from America came to visit and questioned tipping. They were going to be very generous which I am ok with but I pointed out that the tip may be more than they paid per day and (I know it seems strange) may embarrass them.

  4. Scotty, get the point, to me it seems there is an assumption of wealth and the spending should reflect the assumption. Had a chat with my son (23) a while back and his thoghts were why die rich. I get his drift but as I tried to explain to him how will you ever be able to buy anything that costs more thhan what you get paid? Perhaps I live a strange place in Thailand, (not a lot of westerners) but I hear the kii neow a lot and not always to do with me.

  6. I do not think it is restricted to Thai/Farang encounters. As one or two people have mentioned it is used for a lazy person to get money from a sibling because they have some money. I give my father inlaw 1000B when I visit because I a very nice man (5555). He gets on his bike and spends it immediately because if other family members know he has money they will pressursise him into buying whisky.
