    Crackdown On "Farang" Teachers:

Qualifications of foreign teachers in Thailand must meet required standards

BANGKOK: -- Authorities concerned are believed to soon set a common standard for all local schools in recruiting teachers, including those of foreign origins, following a recent case in which an American teacher was arrested for an alleged murder of a six-year-old girl in the United States 10 years ago.

Deputy Secretary General to the Prime Minister Jakrapob Penkair said here Friday that he would meet secretary of the education minister next week to discuss standardized qualifications of all teachers in Thailand and criteria on teacher recruitments.

"All teachers in Thailand must have the same career standard, no matter what nationalities they are. We must now be serious about that," noted Mr. Jakrapob, who is also secretary of Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai.

Mr. Surakiart, among other tasks, supervises the Ministry of Education.

"I'll discuss with the education minister's secretary on qualifications of teachers and tuitors in Thailand, particularly those work for international schools, as well as criteria for screening their backgrounds and issuing work permits for them," he told journalists.

Mr. Jakrapob's remarks followed Wednesday's arrest of John Mark Karr, 41, who had worked as a teacher of some international schools in Thailand.

The middle-aged American was arrested by the Thai Immigration Police Bureau in a downtown Bangkok apartment Wednesday afternoon following a request by US security officials on August 11.

According to Thai Immigration Police Bureau Commissioner Lt. Gen. Suwat Tumrongsriskul, the American authorities had informed Thailand that Mr. Karr had fled the US to hide, first in Malaysia, and then in Thailand.

As the latest development, a court in Boulder, Colorado issued arrest warrants for the suspect on August 16 on charges of abduction and murder.

The arrested suspect confessed to strangling to death the then six-year-old 'beauty queen', Jon Benet Ramsey, in her home in the US state of Colorado on December 26, 1996.

The suspect said that he initially wanted to kidnap the young girl for ransom, but his demand was not met; so he strangled the kidnapped girl.

Mr. Karr left Penang, Malaysia, and entered Thailand on June 6 this year.

The immigration bureau chief said that he had ordered Mr. Karr's visa to be revoked, and that the man, found not to have committed any wrongdoing in Thailand, would be then extradited for trial in the US.

There have been thousands of foreigners working for local schools in Thailand, particularly international and language schools, a number of whom entered the kingdom as tourists with no work permits as professional teachers, according to Mr. Jakrapob.

  3. Your wife will require a Visa from the Canada Embassy! She will be granted it quickly as she holds a british visa! Good luck Canada's Embassy can be tough

I would be grateful if somebody can give advice on taking a Thai wife to countries other than Thailand or one's home country. My wife has a UK permanent residency visa in her Thai passport and lives with me in the UK for most of the year. Since we were married we have taken our holidays in, and made work-related trips to, Thailand. However, I sometimes also make trips to other countries, and have been considering tacking on a holiday with my wife. I will be travelling to Canada in a few months time and wondered what would be involved in gaining entry for my wife (with me and our son) for a 2 week period. It would also be worth knowing how much more complicated such a trip would be if I wanted to cross the border into the USA. In addition I would welcome information on EC countries. My son has a UK passport and is no problem.

  8. Leave Chiangrai to the Thai? Most teens I know would die to have a mall to hang out in? :D The Thai Business owners would like more farang as it brings money to there cash registers! I agree Chiangrai is nice and Peaceful and it would be a shame to see it follow Chiangmai! It would be nice to have Burger King here, just a small outlet. :o

Personally a big department store like a Central with movie cinemas and maybe even a sizzler.

Ohh and I would like a Limping here in CR aswell stocking lots of great Farang food..

    In The Rai!

    I hope not.

For a lot of farang, myself included we like Chiang Rai the way it is or has been in the past.

We don't want lots of big shopping malls, movie theatres and sizzlers, similar to home.

We don't want lots of farang here, like Chiang Mai.

Chiang Rai has a nice mix of foreigners and Thai, a nice mix of foreign shopping and Thai.

Even the traffic isn't so bad here.

So, please leave Chiang Rai to be Thai.

  9. :o I would try Macro they sometimes have it fresh. I do believe they have it in the frozen food section though! ( Ooop's maybe I'm plugging an advert for Macro? )

Good luck with your boss, Asking for seafood in a land locked Province was nice?

  10. :o You can complain at the Main office for the whole complex, they have english speaking staff and they do care! If you had gone there and pointed out the girl in question she may have changed her tune when she saw the managment. Sorry you had to sit near a mess, hope the food was ok :D

Tried out the new night bazaar in Bandoo last night.

Terrible selection of food, nice music and setting but nobody there.

Left and went back to the original in Chiang Rai. The food is ok there but when we arrived, we had as usual, great difficulty getting a seat.

Eventually someone left and we got a table. But what a mess, sea shells all over the place, beer bottles, plates and fish bones under the table.

The waitress cleaned the table with the dirtiest rag I ever saw. I asked her to clean under the table but she said it wasn't her job and walked away.

    Where do you complain? nowhere.

  11. :D I had the opportunity to go to the Chiangrai Resort? To find it you pass hamburger 1 in Bandu and Sinthanee 5 and keep going towards the mountain for about 7km's your will see a sign in red and white locating the Resort. I had the Pork Chops and WoW they actually prepared them properly!

Everyone enjoyed the Food and the service was good. They have a really big fish bond full of fish, if you ask they will give you food to feed them.

The place is off the beat and track but it's darn good food :o

  12. :D Thank you for asking :D Should enough people ask for a classified listings section we will be more than happy to add it for free!

Don't know if this has been addressed, but will you have a classified section for people to sell there

  19. With the help of American mistakes in the region, China has severely cut into the US monopoly on soft power in Southeast Asia, writes JOSHUA KURLANTZICK, in Chiang Rai

Despite its location along northern trade routes, Chiang Rai has until recently remained only a relatively small town, with a few shopping districts and night markets selling brightly patterned textiles, fiery pork curries, and other local specialties. But over the past five years, Chiang Rai, and other towns across northern Thailand, have changed dramatically. In Chiang Rai's modest hotels, Chinese and Thai businessmen furiously negotiate deals for joint ventures over banquets at glam Chinese restaurants, and local travel agents lead large groups of Chinese tourists around town.

Outside the city, Chinese construction companies work through the night building a maze of roads that will link Thailand to the southwestern Chinese province of Yunnan. These companies employ thousands of Chinese workers, who often stay in Thailand illegally after finishing their work. And at Mae Faluang University, a gleaming new Chinese cultural center funded by Beijing now attracts hundreds of Thai students, while other popular new university exchange programmes in the city bring batches of Chinese students to Thailand.

Northern Thailand is not unique in Southeast Asia. In Bangkok last year, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra announced that China should now become the most important country for Thailand's diplomacy.

Recent Chinese immigrants now dominate business in northern Laos, the Laos government is trying to lure large Chinese tour groups, and Chinese-language schools and cultural events are growing in popularity. In Cambodia, Chinese-language schools and television programs also have become among the most popular in the nation, Chinese tourism is skyrocketing, and Chinese investment is funding the country's largest building, which will tower over the capital's modest skyline of Khmer temples

It's getting pretty bad when I have to read things like this in this forum. The one thing I enjoy about Thailand is the fact that should you require female assistance it's easily found. Have to talk about Miss Palm and her 5 sisters? EEEEk

Please gentlemen is life so boring in Thailand we have to resort to topics of this nature?

No need for shrinks, just maybe a night out?
