Humza Yousaf succeeds Nicola Sturgeon as SNP leader
RuamRudy replied to webfact's topic in World News
I do wonder if we are maybe too old to understand his appeal. There is an article on the BBC at the moment where they interviewed a broad range of young (under 30) people and they seem positive, or at least lukewarm to him. Certainly there was no outrage the he might continue pushing for the core SNP raison d'etre. Like you, I don't rate him at all, but the joke about the Tory pm election being like choosing which Glastonbury portaloo to use would have been apt here too. But if he can keep the younger people on side then hopefully we will see a significant swing in the polls in the coming years. After all, the under 55s show, consistently, majority support for independence. -

I have no idea what your post was, but I rarely report others' posts, and this time not guilty either, guv. -

Hmm - I am not sure that's particularly true. If fact, I don't think it's true in any way whatsoever. You may have neglected to read the subject of this particular thread but there are parallels, trust me. -

Were I an SNP member, I would not have voted for him, however the other candidates were not much more appealing either. But it would be a mistake to think that the SNP speaks for all independence supporters. If those who are trying to protect the union limit their focus to only the SNP, then it is most definitely not safe. -

Absolutely not - in fact I referenced it in my first post. What I did not write about, however, was an Indian and a Pakistani negotiating the break up of the UK - because they are both British. That is why I picked up on your suggestion that a Bangladeshi should lead Wales. -

You can try to explain all you like - but that was as tortured as it was contrived. I think I know what you were really inferring. You see, Sunak was born in Southampton and Yousaf in Glasgow. They are as British as you and me. -

If that is to be the case then some fundamental changes need to happen. Brexit, for a start, is hated across all Scotland, and the effect on Scotland has been more extreme than most other areas of the UK. Labour offers no remedy for the situation we have been placed in. The prospect of an independent Scotland joining the EU is much more appealing to many, than to remain a stubborn limb of a sinking state. -

Absolutely not - but you made a comment about a Bangladeshi taking control of Wales. Forgive me if I incorrectly inferred that you were suggesting that Humza was Pakistani or Sunak was Indian, but I can't really see any other reason you would make such a comment. -

I am more interested in understanding its provenance rather than upholding forum rules. Surely you know where you copied it from? That said, the spelling mistakes makes me think it is a blog rather than a news or academic - plus it is referring to the boundary defined by the Civil Jurisdiction (Offshore Activities) Act 1987 rather than the amendment made in '99. -

I think that the religious fervour is a little less of a concern in either country - plus let's hope that the grasping, thieving days of empire are well and truly in the past. All we need returned is the area of Scottish waters annexed by Blair in '99 and things will be tickety boo, I am sure. -

The SNP is pushing for independence but they are not the only organisation pursuing it. To suggest that Humza Yousef's election as leader means that independence is not going to happen just means that you have failed to grasp the wider movement. Then again, you think that the union is more secure now than it has ever been before,# so I think your grasp of Scottish sentiment or Scottish politics are not your strongest suits. -

The SNP is not independence and is not the independence movement. If you genuinely believe that these times are the pinnacle of union strength then you must be living in a cave. -

As pointed out elsewhere, if Humza was to lead us to independence, it would be somewhat ironic if a Muslim Scot of Pakistani descent was to negotiate the separation of the UK with a Hindu Englishman of Indian heritage- 59 replies

True, but non-observance and open renunciation are not necessarily the same. -

Being born into the Muslim faith does not mean you have to be observant. I have been to many bars in Muscat and seen locals drinking at professional levels. Just as I was born into the Christian faith but am not a believer, it is entirely feasible that, if these guys are Muslims, the faith they were born into means little to them. -
Reminds me of this from a decade ago: No Visas: Immigration Arrested Honest Couple An international row has erupted over the arrest of a young French couple and their 22-month-old child. The family arrived on a flight at Phuket International Airport and left the terminal without being processed by Immigration... The blunder was only discovered days later when the honest French couple, on their first trip overseas, took the trouble to return to Phuket airport so the error could be corrected.... The couple were later made to appear in court, fined and sentenced to a suspended jail term,

But this forum does not encapsulate the total gamut of protest and campaigning in respect to, well, anything. Therefore, the post to which I was initially responding: is clearly false unless one bases one's perspective solely on the topics posited in World News.
