  1. Had a similar problem and around 20 years ago and my New Zealand gastro surgeon inserted a tube that inflated and expanded my oesophagus. I had been having several choking episodes that triggered my consultation. The rational as I understood it, was that the oesophagus is partly cartilage. I had a naturally narrow oesophagus and as I had put weight on as well it had been further constricted (fat in your body expands inwards as well as the visible outwards). If I recall correctly it was taken up to 1.5x and would settle back a little The upshot was, I have had no problems with choking since and I immediately ceased having continual heartburn and acid reflux. I had been taking all sorts of pills and tablets that enabled me to ease the haertburn and since that time have never taken them. Not sure that would help everyone but I would certainly suggest looking into it if you have a serious problem. The heartburn and acid reflux was really affecting my quality of life and it was so good to find that cured.
  2. Had my top teeth removed at 21 after continual problems and fitted straight away with a denture. Ate a hamburger the following night and have had very few problems over the years. That was 56 years ago. One of my best decisions. I did get an oral surgeon to do the work.
  3. The New Zealand Mosque attack was perpetrated by an Australian who had serious flags because of his travel etc and should not have been allowed into New Zealand. The NZ police issued him with a firearms licence in direct contravention of the Firearm Licence requirements and have spent huge resources covering it up. No police officer or employee has been held publicly accountable. Licensing is pointless, responding to the red flags that these criminals put up is the only effective response.
  4. I became an Orthodox Hedonist early in life. Suits me fine.
  5. Just look at Sudan and the new "South Sudan" You think that is a success do you?
  6. Just what the world needs, another state with disastrous political history being given "country" status and hence a vote in the UN. Reward the terrorists with status and see what other areas follow suit. Will Myanmar become 3 countries or more with all the different factions getting their own status? There are already 38 so called countries with less than a million population voting in the UN. What an absurd joke to make another rabble ruled territory that cannot survive without "aid" self governing.
  7. The epitome of British cooking? A bit of boiled chicken? What exactly is ballotine of chicken? https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRwXeYnIkqLqpuXv-w-Huho6ATxhshXVB-Q9BvgpzYmhg&s A ballotine (from French balle, 'package') is traditionally a de-boned thigh and/or leg part of the chicken, duck or other poultry stuffed with forcemeat and other ingredients. It is tied to hold its shape and sometimes stitched up with a trussing needle. A ballotine is cooked by roasting, braising or poaching.
  8. Unwise for sure but I really enjoy seeing the cute darlings, wearing a thong, pass me on their motorbike. One of the many delights of living on Phuket.
  9. The pilot deliberately took the mushrooms before he flew. Anyone who deliberately takes drugs, and as a result of their actions under the influence, endangers or kills others, deserves the heaviest penalties.
  10. But they work, not like the namby-pamby slap on the wrist that many western countries regard as punishment.
  11. Go through Kamala, past the entrance to Fantasea and instead of making the right hand turn to head further north, go straight ahead and the small road takes you to the north end of Kamala Beach. Usually parking at the end of the road by the police station. Fronting the beach are a plethora of beach restaurants and a lovely place to enjoy a sunset with a meal and a drink and your feet almost in the sand.
  12. Must defend US driving. Have done several 3 month road trips in the US all of 10,000 miles or more (Hertz must hate me) and I just love driving there. 75mph speed limits and fabulous roads, such great scenery, such great small towns and people. Drivers are on the whole respectful and obey road rules far better than anywhere else I have driven, including Germany and Australia.
  13. You missed Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand off that list. Her 6 year rule was the worst economic disaster NZ has had.
  14. Hi Mark WINZ and the Customs share information and they know when I depart and when I re-enter and my wife and I have to notify them how long we are out of NZ etc. We notify them religiously and inform them of the reasons etc why we are out of the country and before we leave. Never had a problem. If you want super you must apply before you leave the country and if you are going for an extended period you must satisfy their criteria. Get it sorted and play by their rules or you will be in the terrible situation of being stuck overseas being denied income, to which you are entitled, but you failed to file the paperwork and fulfil the residency requirements. Good luck

had a new Honda HRV done 2 years ago at Honda. I feel it is really worthwhile, keeps looking like new and a shower of rain seems to take all the grime away. Cannot remember the cost but included 4 retouches 6 months apart. Get a lot of salt/sand grime from Patong Beach every day and we use the car every day.
  20. A fair and reasonable government would ensure the compensation claims from the Post Office scandal should be paid out long before any consideration of a claim by this terrorist. British Justice was the paragon standard that the rest of the world aspired to. The lawyers, the consultant lawyers and the executives and investigative staff of the Post Office and Royal Mail has besmirched the reputation of the entire legal system. This is the issue that needs to be finalised now, not some technical issue with a signature.

Those baguettes at Chez Nous are worth the drive down from Patong. We regularly go down and enjoy an afternoon meal, delightful staff. Got caught in the traffic for the King's Regatta at Kata last night on our way down. Took an hour to get through but well worth the wait as we went to Le Celtique and we again shared a deep fried, breaded Goat cheese as an entree and that is an absolute delight. Our main meals were just as excellent. We are so spoilt with great food and restaurants on Phuket with some really nice staff.

Thanks everybody for your help I thought Big C was still opening at 10 or 11am so I will try at 9am I think i can exist till then for the pleasure of a fresh baked baguette. Going to try freezing the half baguettes, ideal with garlic butter smeared on them.

Anyone know of a shop/bakery, in Patong, that has fresh crusty baguettes and is open, say from 8am or earlier? Just love a good baguette and cheese with a morning coffee.
  25. Very brave guy entering the cage to rescue the victim and only armed with a stick. That is a very courageous act.
