  1. Why are you concerned with school administration? It is their job.

How would you feel if an administrator chases you regarding your role as a 'teacher.' TIT patience is a virtue that is rewarded.

You can get all hot and bothered and run around doing somebody else's job. Why bother?

  2. The guy that fixes my air con is called an engineer - it doesn't make it so and he is not, Teachers at university are called professor - they are not.

To work as a language instructor a foreigner needs a recognised degree and a TEFL certificate. It doesn't make him a teacher. TIT everything is dumbed down./ A degree form a Thai university is equivalent to a UK A level .

The OP is naturally concerned his Non-B will expire and he is working without a WP .

The 'process' has been completed a million times before and call each piece of paper what ever you like, it's immaterial to the OP. All admin will be completed before his Non-B expires. If it isn't he will have no difficulty getting another Non-B from Laos or Penang if paperwork is in order. Been done a million times.

  3. There is a unique culture at gas / petrol stations world wide. In the UK fuel is called petrol and has to meet quality standards and price is variable. The majority are self service, pump your own petrol, pay with your credit card at the pump or in the 'shop'. This poses an issue for those who pay in the 'shop'. They will leave their car at the pump while they meander to the shop with it's many treats, special brew, porn, sweets and snacks, flowers and BBQ sundries. Meanwhile at the pump their car is blocking access and infuriating other 'impatient' patrons.

Current fuel price in the UK is one pound thirty pence per liter (Baht 65) Min wage in UK/day B2400 (1 liter 2.7% of daily pay)

In Thailand the fuel has a number or 'strange' name something to do with 'water'. And the price and quality of fuel fluctuates more than my neighbor's wife's smalls. The station may be referred to by the brand, PTT, Shell et al.

Motorbikes are only permitted at a designated pump, at the discretion, skill and judgement of the professional pump attendant. This 'well presented, educated, jolly character' is armed with strict instruction. It is not within their remit to acknowledge, speak, smile at you and heaven forbid remove the petrol cap. Play the dumb farang and wait for them to take it off and see the dilemma in their face.

Filling a car is another arduous and challenging task for the Thai gas station professional and 9 out of ten times they manage to get more in the car than on the floor. Ok 7 out of ten times.

Current fuel price in Thailand is B39 per liter (UK 78 pence) Min wage in Thailand/day B300 (1 liter 13% of daily pay)

Darwin's laughing in his death basket.

  4. It seems the western influence of TV members consider a letter from the ministry of education is some sort of licence. It is used by the employment office to issue a work permit.

The OP could consider the culture here in Asia where time has a different perspective. Relax, your school administrators may appear moronic but what can you do about it? Maybe the answer is nothing - if so why waste you energy being concerned. And prepare yourself for the worst case scenario. If you have to go to Laos again take your time, take a week business leave to do it, Vientiane is a nice place when you look a little closer.

Stay calm, be professional and let the morons do their job.

    Good luck

PS ignore the morons on TV

  5. Nothing has changed, there are no new requirements for a 'teachers licence' as any teacher with 1 years experience and the stated qualifications is exempt.

TV members still seem confused. An NES 'teacher' is only required to present English language, there is no requirement to understand the ins-and-outs of education.

Any teacher working in Thailand will know every course they teach is English vocabulary in context and pronunciation. Some TV members persist with 'what use is a western degree.' Without suggestion of a better system to recruit foreigner teachers. What's the point?

  6. Language is as a social science as such it is infinite. It is a means to communicate a message, and as mentioned many times here and elsewhere, if a message is conveyed, received and understood communication has taken place. The general purpose of any language.

In any developed economy 'work' has to be generated to employ a populous - without work, there would be social chaos.

South east Asia is a developing economic region that consumes raw material and adds economic value by processes. it supplies a world market and in return generates cash. This cash is distributed to the populous so they also develop. The goal is to become a mature economy.

When an economy matures it becomes economical for the populous to engage in sophisticated industry and purchase basic finished goods from a developing economy.

The developed economy then has no industry and employs new technology to create new markets. It cannot produce the same goods and compete with a developing economy because the labor force is sophisticated, unionised, organised and educated. It is idle.

When the wheel was utilised people had more time, they no longer had to carry the goods they produce to the consumer. When man has free time he is naturally inquisitive and employs technology.

These studies, collections of data are generated by inquisitive minds with nothing else to do. And there has to be a protocol for efficiency and enable widespread use

For a NES to be employed in Thailand he must have a degree and TEFL certificate, it is biased and prejudice but the protocol. Applicants without them are simply binned it saves the employer time ie. finite resources.

Apple packaged technology to develop the walkman into an ipod, combined it with mass marketing to create a perceived new product and new market. Designed in the sophisticated west and assembled in the developing east.

The TOEIC test is another 'product' developed to create a new market. A cash generator. As are literacy tests, financial products, vitamin pills, spas, diet books etc, a means of generation cash out of thin air.

The culture of testing in Thailand is to generate cash to buy large amounts of non-existent tea. The figures are published to say:

'...look we aren't sitting around scamming, we are working, and here is the proof.'

Schools out for a month, I've nothing to do but pretend to mark 200 exam papers. The students will receive a grade that correlates with their existing GPA. No relation to their exam result. It's all just for show.

  7. Amazing how people manage to breath in and out, feed and clothe themselves yet basic maths is beyond them.

World literacy rate rate is 84%. Thailand's literacy rate is 93%. The article is a nonsense.

Why isn't the article about the stunning achievement of Thai sixth graders that are head and shoulders more advance than the world average?

The biggest issue the planet faces is the incredible number of stupid people that occupy it. Perhaps there should be a test here for TV members before they are allowed access to the internet - as self control mechanism built into every computer to save the user embarrassment.

    Perhaps something like this:

    PC: Vhat is your name?

    USER: Erm.

PC: You are indeed a vorthy adversary.

  8. The idea of 90 questions in 60 minutes is due to the grading system. Some student may complete all 90 questions.

The exam will be designed to include 45 'easy' questions so all literate students receive a minimum pass mark. The grade individual students receive must follow a predetermined bell curve regardless of their true exam result.

it is forbidden to give the majority of student a high grade as this is seen as too easy. It may seem odd to a person outside of the education system but TIT.

Under the current system a teacher is not assessed by student performance but conformity to the culture of the institution.

Only my experience and interpretation of discourse with long serving colleagues.

  9. Makes me laugh when know nothings stick there narcissistic oar in just because they haven't experienced it.

Sadly Thailand is full of these people. The Op has concerns and looks to get a realists view of immigration in Thailand. Ignorance is rife here and some would do well to appreciate and understand the significance of kulture.

God knows some people can't even spell the word!

  10. Great post but, how bored, stoned, inebriated are you? Consider western culture and compare. In the west we are happy to work Mon - Fri lunch time. Receive decent money, can buy what ever we like and go on holiday wherever we want to. But there are some protocols to adhere to that favor younger people. When you get to 35-40 + some of the enjoyment is denied as you get older and some things previously enjoyed are no longer as much fun. Life becomes a waiting room, waiting for the inevitable when bit of you start failing.

    For example:

Nightclubs and young women, out of bounds when you hit 40. And your a prime target for a dusting.

Earning a wage becomes a bore when you've got all you need, but it's never enough.

Younger people seem a little intimidating, if only they knew how lucky they are. All fields around here in my day.

To have a wife is great but is it natural to hang around with an overweight middle aged women, you've banged so many times it's no longer what is was. And it's costing you a fortune and there is no easy way out.

Ugly women seem more attractive than your own wife. You turn into a dirty old man tossing yourself off.

When you have kids it's fantastic too see them doing well, but do you want to hang around with them.

Conversely in Thailand all these things can be flipped to your own selfish natural desire.

All you need is a little money, 20 something bar girl, 125 motorbike, and a desire to be young again. Only now you're a narcissist.

The has to be ying and there has to be yang. It's just old age <deleted>**ing with ya.

  11. Add another 25 of my P6 students. Their Thai reading level is below my P2 grade son. sad.png

Most Thai students will tell you that Thai language class is their worst. They absolutely hate it.

I'm not surprised they can't read. Look at their alphabet!!!

Do what the countries around them have done and use the alphabet of their former colonisers - Dutch, British,

French. Is there any ASEAN country using a pre-colonial alphabet? smile.png

Thailand was only ever occupied by Japan (although they would still deny it), that alphabet would help....

Burmese, Chinese, Portuguese and the Dutch, did the Greeks make it this far east? Or and the Spanish.
