  1. Did I miss it in the article....Big C is losing or making a profit in Thailand ? But is sold off to pay off debt , because South american markets are non profitable ? <deleted>.

Another rich chinese Thai taking over like cp took over Makro ? That sucks. It can only get worse.

    First Carrefour , my favorite , then Makro , now Big C , what's next Lotus ?

Sorry about Big C but if tesco goes, it will be godsend!

  2. I think the best rate you can get right now is the 3% p.a. Ministry of Finance Bonds issued through Bangkok Bank. Interest is paid semi-annually into a BBL Savings Account and the max deposit is 2,000,000. These bonds were first issued in October 2015 for 3 years so maturity is October 2018. They are available until the end of February 2016.

On the max deposit, semi-annual interest is 30,000 Baht less 15% tax.

  3. Thank you for the video of the elephants, they are beautiful

majestic animals but i couldn't watch the cruelty.

Another .org that demonstrates the ethical treatment of elephants (and rides on them are forbidden and no hooks are used by the dedicated mahouts) is www.elephantnature park.org north of Chiang Mai. It is well worth a visit to see the good work of this organization.

  4. This has nothing to do with the US Treasury. Misleading post !!!! .US Treasury securities are rated AA+ or AAA never BB.

That's what I thought also, but my friends says indeed us treasury. Waiting for more info from his bankers before I go any further. This particular bond is bb, but supposedly they primarily deal is us treasury. Anyway, seems too good to be true. No way I would do a 10 year, but my friend is already in for 10.

Don't be fooled by the mumbo jumbo your "friend" gives you. This is not a US Treasury Bond---no way!!!

  5. Was there in December and our housekeeper's brother drove us for a few days. He normally works as a driver for a UK advertising company. He drove us past his boss' condo (she is second in command in the company) which was in a fairly crummy area but the building was an OK 6 story structure. Rent? 4,000 USD per month!!! Needless to say there will be no retiree expat community for quite a while until supply catches up with demand.

  6. Bangkok Bank has plan not generally advertised although I found it on the website. It's a 3 year 3% p.a. Ministry of Finance Bond administered by BBL and you get a special savings account book. It's available to Thai Citizens and permanent residents. Maximum deposit is 2,000,000 Baht. I got it at the 2nd Road office.

The 3 year period runs from when it first became available which was Oct. 31 I believe. The Bond will be available until 2/29/2016.

  7. Most mornings I walk from Dusit to Walking Street and back, starting at around 6am. Keep myself amused by counting the rats.

And people watching as I walk---ladyboys still primping and strutting, the lowly, efficient sidewalk sweepers doing their jobs, boatsmen waiting for the busloads, etc.

  8. I've had kidney stones many times but not with the symptoms you describe and also have an enlarged prostate for I have some pills. Get to your urologist soon. I'd recommend mine who is Dr. Jimmy Kongcharoen at BPH if you're in Pattaya.

  9. So you know the less hassle the better right. In your country what you should do in the future is to decide how much you initially want to bring, example $2000 .Go to your bank tell them you want the one hundred dollar bills with out any marks, tears and stamps and preferably new.My friend got stuck with $1200 of his money that 3 banks wouldn't exchange. There is no set rule here it seems .Some take them and some don't. Better to be diligent.

And if you go to Myanmar, the bills need to be in absolute pristine condition---no marks, no tears, no wrinkles, no nothing

  10. Just got back from Yangon/Mandalay after 8 days. I would recommend it highly as taxis with driver are very cheap but infrastructure including hotels leaves something to be desired. Plus, hotels are expensive.

VN (or Laos less so) may be your best bet for cost. Hanoi is a fabulous, walkable city (HCM also but not my cup of tea) and hotel costs are very reasonable. Maybe split you time between Hanoi and Hoi An, a lovely World Heritage Site city
