  1. Hello All,

I’m looking for some insight into commuting from Bangkok to the Asian Institute of Technology’s Khlong Luang District campus, close to Thammasat University’s campus.

I know I can get a minivan van from Mo Chit or Victory monument, the journey in the morning is fine but the evening run takes twice as long. Because of this I’m wondering if making to journey by motorcycle might be feasible. I wouldn’t consider taking the freeway as that would be suicidal!

Would anyone know if there is an alternative route that would be relatively safe? I’m hoping to live in the Tao Poon or Bang Sue area or Ari if I can afford it. Any suggestions of interesting placed to live, places with a few decent restaurants, bars and condos, that would be convenient for the journey would be appreciated too. I haven’t seen anything appealing close to the campus.

    Thanks very much.

  2. Hello All,

I'm staying close to Bang Sue MRT for a week or so and am looking for some recommendations of places to eat with in walking distance. Am particularly interested in Thai / Dim Sum, breakfast options and coffee shops.

    Thanks

  3. Hello All,

I have a basic understanding of Thai language but am looking at learning from scratch through to advanced, including reading & writing. Any recommendations for online courses, CBTs etc. would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks very much

  4. Thanks very much for the advice, appreciated.

It is a proper global company but there was something on their person specification regarding work permits that confused me.

They stipulate 'holder of a valid work permit is a must'. As I understand it, if I did hold a work permit in another position and subsequently left to take up this position my exiting work permit would become invalid and it would be necessary to apply for a new permit for the new position. So what they're expecting is impossible?

  5. Hello All,

I'm in the process of applying for a job in Bangkok, I've never worked there before, and have been asked for my salary expectations. The position is 'Junior Project Manager' for a research institution. I am hoping someone might have a rough idea as to what would be reasonable, I am thinking 40,000 to 50,000 THB?

It's been a few years since I have visited Thailand so if someone could advise if a salary in this range would provide a decent lifestyle? I'd like to be able to afford a decent 1 - 2 bed apartment close to a BTS or MRT station with a pool.

    Thanks very much.

  6. Did the trip recently on a 110 cc, there were two of us + luggage, we struggled up some of the hills but it only took about three hours to get to Pai with a stop for lunch. As said above the road from Pai to Mae Hong Son is spectacular, I agree that it is defiantly worth extending at least to Soppong.

Re safety, I found traffic coming down hill too fast and often crossing on the wrong side of the road to be the biggest hazard. Also, it gets pretty cold when it rains on the higher parts of the route so I'd recommend taking some decent waterproofs.

  7. DK David's kitchen for western food on special occasions - great steaks and the pumpkin soup with truffle is amazing.

Café Diverseo near Suan Dok gate does excellent cheap Western and Thai food - pork loin, grilled sea bass & Thai salads all good.

Café 9 Moo 9 out towards Hang Dong has a really nice setting and excellent western food - daily changing menu but the sausages are possibly the best in Thailand.

Pak Dang & Tiddin (really good tom yum ka at Tiddin) by the river for good Thai food.

Dash by Tha Pae Gate - All the Thai food I've tried is good but the carrot cake is my favourite dish there.

  8. Before I posted I did some research on the World Health Organization Website and it seems that dioxycylene or methloquin or atovitquone-proquinol are the medication I need for the part of Indo that I will be visiting, Malaku, Flores and Bali.

As mentioned above I guessed that a Thai pharmacist may not be the person best placed to give advice on this, and I didn't want to just self-medicate. Thanks all for the replies it's helpful to have advice from those who have first hand experience. I had a really bad reaction to methloquin in the past so I'll be going with dioxycyline or aovquone-proquinol.

    Thanks again

  9. Would some one be able to advise as to where in Chiang Mai is the best place to obtain advice on anti malarial medication? I am travelling to some remote parts of Indonesia soon where there is a high risk of contracting malaria. I live very close to the big pharmacies on Suthep Road who I am sure will stock the medication but are the staff in there qualified to give advice?

    Thanks

  10. I use a proxy service called 'Identity Cloaker', this allows me to connect to on demand TV such as BBC I-Player etc, in Europe, The Americas & Australia. It also allows me to access services such as Netflix.

I have found it to be very reliable & their technical support have responded promptly to any issues I have had, which turned out to be ISP related, The cost is about 10 Euros a month.

  11. I think I have found the cause. I am receiving junk texts from 'mobile336'. Every time I received one my credit drops by three baht. There is no explanation in the text as how to unsubscribe. I tried registering as spam on my mobile but it tells me the number is invalid. I tried googling it but no joy. Will call support and see if they can help. Thanks again for the responses.
  12. Hello All,

I have a pay as you go sim with True.

Recently I have noticed that credit is being used on my phone even though I am not texting, making calls, using GPS or 3G services. For example last night I topped up my credit to 100 Baht, made sure data, GPS and WiFi were all off, haven't used the phone at all and this morning 4 Baht has already been used.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? I did suspect updates from certain aps but I have removed all the aps that I have installed since purchasing the phone,

    Thanks

  13. Assuming you don't have any underlying medical condition I would suggest a combination of resistance (weight) training and cardio exercise. I find I lose a lot of body fat when I combine weights with interval training - short bouts of intense exercise. And of course a healthy diet.

I think the most important thing to do is find a type of exercise that you enjoy so it is less of a chore.

I enjoy cycling up Doi Suthip which I feel is a good way of combining cardio and resistance training,

  14. You could try The Steak Doctor Restaurant at the end of Suthip Road. I have been there once and had a pork chop which was not bad and less than 100 baht, They did have many other types of steak on the menu, I can't remember the prices but it didn't seem too expensive.

There is also a little street stall on Suthip Road called the Steak Bar, I have been there twice now. The chicken steak was pretty good and about 70 baht, I have also had their fish and chips, calamari and mini burgers which were all fantastic.

Again on Suthip a place called The BBQ, it is more expensive than the places I mention above but serves bigger portions. However I preferred the places mentioned above - the bill came to about 1300 baht for two mains one starter and a couple of beers.

Also on Suthip near the Steak Doctor is a vegetarian place called Pun Pun, they do a very good tofu steak there and it is cheap.

I like you am also struggling to find many places that offer affordable high quality protein and have started having a couple of boiled eggs with breakfast every morning and adding a can of tuna to my lunch if I buy street food.

  15. I'm new to Chiang Mai so I don't know how long they have been around. My wife took a TEFL course through a language school called SEE TEFL, they recommend them to their students. Our experience as prospective tenants with them was very positive. We e-mailed them explaining what we wanted, they responded promptly and regularly with properties that matched what we had asked for. All the communication was in English which was very well written and spoken on their part and they came across as being very professional. We found a property through them very quickly. There was a small problem with our place when we moved in and they assisted with getting rectified as soon as we raised it with them.

  16. There are a couple at the end of Rattana Kosin Road near the football ground (not CM United the small one right at the end near the temple). There is also a market stall that sells cycling gear at very reasonable prices on Saturdays and Sundays.
