  1. Did the trip recently on a 110 cc, there were two of us + luggage, we struggled up some of the hills but it only took about three hours to get to Pai with a stop for lunch. As said above the road from Pai to Mae Hong Son is spectacular, I agree that it is defiantly worth extending at least to Soppong.

Re safety, I found traffic coming down hill too fast and often crossing on the wrong side of the road to be the biggest hazard. Also, it gets pretty cold when it rains on the higher parts of the route so I'd recommend taking some decent waterproofs.

  2. DK David's kitchen for western food on special occasions - great steaks and the pumpkin soup with truffle is amazing.

Café Diverseo near Suan Dok gate does excellent cheap Western and Thai food - pork loin, grilled sea bass & Thai salads all good.

Café 9 Moo 9 out towards Hang Dong has a really nice setting and excellent western food - daily changing menu but the sausages are possibly the best in Thailand.

Pak Dang & Tiddin (really good tom yum ka at Tiddin) by the river for good Thai food.

Dash by Tha Pae Gate - All the Thai food I've tried is good but the carrot cake is my favourite dish there.

  3. Before I posted I did some research on the World Health Organization Website and it seems that dioxycylene or methloquin or atovitquone-proquinol are the medication I need for the part of Indo that I will be visiting, Malaku, Flores and Bali.

As mentioned above I guessed that a Thai pharmacist may not be the person best placed to give advice on this, and I didn't want to just self-medicate. Thanks all for the replies it's helpful to have advice from those who have first hand experience. I had a really bad reaction to methloquin in the past so I'll be going with dioxycyline or aovquone-proquinol.

    Thanks again

  4. Would some one be able to advise as to where in Chiang Mai is the best place to obtain advice on anti malarial medication? I am travelling to some remote parts of Indonesia soon where there is a high risk of contracting malaria. I live very close to the big pharmacies on Suthep Road who I am sure will stock the medication but are the staff in there qualified to give advice?

    Thanks

  5. I use a proxy service called 'Identity Cloaker', this allows me to connect to on demand TV such as BBC I-Player etc, in Europe, The Americas & Australia. It also allows me to access services such as Netflix.

I have found it to be very reliable & their technical support have responded promptly to any issues I have had, which turned out to be ISP related, The cost is about 10 Euros a month.

  6. I think I have found the cause. I am receiving junk texts from 'mobile336'. Every time I received one my credit drops by three baht. There is no explanation in the text as how to unsubscribe. I tried registering as spam on my mobile but it tells me the number is invalid. I tried googling it but no joy. Will call support and see if they can help. Thanks again for the responses.
  7. Hello All,

I have a pay as you go sim with True.

Recently I have noticed that credit is being used on my phone even though I am not texting, making calls, using GPS or 3G services. For example last night I topped up my credit to 100 Baht, made sure data, GPS and WiFi were all off, haven't used the phone at all and this morning 4 Baht has already been used.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? I did suspect updates from certain aps but I have removed all the aps that I have installed since purchasing the phone,

    Thanks

  8. Assuming you don't have any underlying medical condition I would suggest a combination of resistance (weight) training and cardio exercise. I find I lose a lot of body fat when I combine weights with interval training - short bouts of intense exercise. And of course a healthy diet.

I think the most important thing to do is find a type of exercise that you enjoy so it is less of a chore.

I enjoy cycling up Doi Suthip which I feel is a good way of combining cardio and resistance training,

  9. You could try The Steak Doctor Restaurant at the end of Suthip Road. I have been there once and had a pork chop which was not bad and less than 100 baht, They did have many other types of steak on the menu, I can't remember the prices but it didn't seem too expensive.

There is also a little street stall on Suthip Road called the Steak Bar, I have been there twice now. The chicken steak was pretty good and about 70 baht, I have also had their fish and chips, calamari and mini burgers which were all fantastic.

Again on Suthip a place called The BBQ, it is more expensive than the places I mention above but serves bigger portions. However I preferred the places mentioned above - the bill came to about 1300 baht for two mains one starter and a couple of beers.

Also on Suthip near the Steak Doctor is a vegetarian place called Pun Pun, they do a very good tofu steak there and it is cheap.

I like you am also struggling to find many places that offer affordable high quality protein and have started having a couple of boiled eggs with breakfast every morning and adding a can of tuna to my lunch if I buy street food.

  10. I'm new to Chiang Mai so I don't know how long they have been around. My wife took a TEFL course through a language school called SEE TEFL, they recommend them to their students. Our experience as prospective tenants with them was very positive. We e-mailed them explaining what we wanted, they responded promptly and regularly with properties that matched what we had asked for. All the communication was in English which was very well written and spoken on their part and they came across as being very professional. We found a property through them very quickly. There was a small problem with our place when we moved in and they assisted with getting rectified as soon as we raised it with them.

  11. There are a couple at the end of Rattana Kosin Road near the football ground (not CM United the small one right at the end near the temple). There is also a market stall that sells cycling gear at very reasonable prices on Saturdays and Sundays.

  12. Thanks for the responses above, it seems that as one of our main reasons for going is snorkelling and because my wife sufferes badly from sea sickness Koh Lipe may not be a good option for us in September. I have done a lot of research and it seems that the safest bet might be Koh Tao?

  13. Hi,

Has can anyone comment as to whehter Koh Lipe is a good place to visit in September? I am thinking of heading down there but I remeber reading in the past that the island can be a bit neglected in the off-season and that there can be a lot of rubbish on the beaches as a result. Does anyone know how much of an issue this is?

    Thanks a lot.

  14. Hi, I need to travel the international airport at Bangkok from Koh Chiang tomorrow and need to be at the airport by 8.30 p.m. at the latest. I had planned to get the government bus from the pier direct to the airport at 14.00 but it seems that this might be too late as a friend who did the journey today didn't arrive there until nearly nine o'clock. Could someone tell me if busses that leave from Trad stop at the airport? I think if I get a bus from there a bit earlier I should be ok. Thanks a lot.
