Is this the end of Thailand as a Retirement Destination
kennw replied to Robin's topic in ASEAN NOW Community Pub
Most Thai insurance companies now have an age limit above which they will not sell you health insurance. Those that do are in the region of US$12,000 per year. Many have adequate funds to self insure, But then you cant travel because you cannot buy the US$50,000 Thai Pass cover The insurance companies will not sell it to you because you live here. -
Of course a sensible approach would be to charge Baht 300 or 500 to every incomer add to a TOT fund that would cover any one in this situation. The current plan only enriches the insurance companies. Imagine the good publicity "a tourist arrives and tests positive, the TOT fund covered his expenses" come to Thailand relax and enjoy worry free. Compare this with the message that is now being sent "tourist stuck with huge medical bill" No brainer!

SURVEY: Health Insurance for foreigners -- Good idea or not?
kennw replied to Scott's topic in Thailand News
Totally agree -
Yes this is a big problem for over 74 yrs old. Many insurance companies will not offer insurance over this age. Those that do dramatically increase their price as the period of cover (return to Thailand date and period to visa extension renewal date). Examples, over 74, and 180 days cover, Baht 23,040, over 180 days Baht 43,200. Note that the Thai Pass requirement says "Health Insurance with covid cover" If the concern is about returning retirees coming down with Covid, then make the insurance covid specific. This should dramatically reduce the cost. The fact is double vaxed people including over 74's are a very small percentage of those requiring hospitalization from covid. Un-vaxed people are those most likely to require hospitalization. Note also that the Thai Pass requires you to be double vaxed. Why should returning over 74's who dont need health insurance for their visa extension renewal, but suddenly do on their return from a home country family visit.

Thailand expects one million foreign visitors between November and March
kennw replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Read the requirement carefully, it is "medical insurance" that must include covid cover, this forces people into a much larger policy and of course higher cost. -
Explain to me why this senior should be forced to do/use something he does not want to do, and if you think stay at home is the best option just wait till you reach that age and some one tells you the same thing. Where is your empathy.?

Thailand Pass To Entice More International Tourists
kennw replied to snoop1130's topic in Thailand News
The real kicker for retirees here who may want to return to their home country for say family visit one month then return to Thailand is the Covid insurance aspect. Currently the cover must be US$50,000, for the period of the visa. For a retiree this could be nearly one year to the next extension renewal. So, the insurance cover will need to be for this period under current rules. Compound this to the age of retirees, both lead to higher premiums. And, some of the insurance companies set the upper age limit at 75. Does this mean the over 75's can leave the country but not return? Prisoners here. -
