  1. Its always good to open up with an Einstein quote, so here goes: "Wisdom is not a product of schooling but of the lifelong attempt to aquire it."

The problem is that some students do not care about wisdom, learning, or even about grades - they only care about passing, which simply means showing up for X amount of lessons and then doing an unfailable re-test at the end of the term.

Other students simply do the work because it is the "right" thing to do - teacher say, student do.

Yet another group of students actually wants to learn. They are intrinsically motivated by their interests, goals and ambitions to understand what you teach because they realise that they may need that knowledge in the future.

The question is whether you want to invest time and energy in attempting to "motivate" a group that has no intentions of learning anything, or whether you want to cater to those who pay attention and do work. At a high school level, I dont believe it is the teachers job to motivate the students. If you can make the lessons fun and engaging then that is a big plus, but the actual motivation should come from the students themselves and their desire to participate. In other countries, students are extrinsically motivated by grades and the possibility of failure. As these are non-factors in Thailand, the "only-aim-to-pass"-students have zero reasons to listen to anything you are saying - and they know it.

Some might say that it should be possible to make lessons fun and entertaining for everyone. While I agree with that, I will still refer to the Einstein quote; no learning comes for free, and those with zero ambitions will do zero work because they know they dont have to. The way to deal with it? Waste zero time or effort on them.

In the end, I think that spending too much time trying to wake up or "motivate" the lazies is wasted time. Not only your wasted time, but the rest of the groups time - other students could be making progress while you try to move a mountain with a stick.

Summarizing: Even the most interesting and engaging lesson will be slept through by someone who only desires to pass. Make your lessons interesting and engaging for those who pay attention and leave the sleepers with their heads on their desks.

I realise my perspective may seem cynical, but yeah.. TIT.

  2. "Tourism police, tour operators and community leaders on Koh Tao yesterday held a meeting over what to do to boost tourist safety and provide better services.

The proposals included encouraging tourists to dress properly when not swimming or sunbathing, ask them not to commit intimate acts in public, as well as regulate taxi services and publishing do's and don'ts about Thai |culture on leaflets and in other media."

    Is Thailand new Saudi arabia??

    Koh Tao 2015

Amazing that this stupid post gets so many likes. Could be written by one of those disgusting British tabloids.

Consider the source levels. One would expect that you'd have ceased to be amazed, by now. Many posters, on this forum, spend their daily LOS lives, posting to each, and every little thread, no matter what the topic may be. They were the same way at home,

Back to the topic, The tourist police proposals are ridiculous, considering that improper dress, in Thailand, would be akin to blatant public nudity. A "dress properly" suggestion in Muslim Malaysia, would be understandable, but Thailand? Huh?cheesy.gif LOS really needs to get itself unconstipated, as do those expats who gave a "thumbs-up" to those proposals.

  3. The fact that a collective of western Embassies found it necessary to present such a letter, to the 2014 Thai News Media directorate(s), is indicative of the general state of immaturity prevailing in the "overall" Thai cultural mentality.

Personally, I'm already of the conclusion, that such a letter is nothing more than an effort in total futility. My reasoning, and considered opinion is thus: "It is totally impossible to pour reverse osmosis treated H2O, into a Made-in-China glass drinking cup, that is already filled to the brim with unchlorinated faucet water."

As the late John Lennon, so eloquently wrote, in the song "Let It Be"coffee1.gif

    Sorry to nit-pick but,

Let it Be was a McCartney composition...

    thumbsup.gif

No problem. thanks for the correction. I forgot, in my old age, that McCartney was the lead composer of the Beatles.wai.gif

Think you will find that it is actually accredited as a McCartney composition, as were most of the songs of the Rolling Stones ooops sorry a typo BEATLES.

Yes it was probably majorly a McCartney composition but all songs, as far as I am aware, were always a combination of at least two, three or all of the fab four. John Lennon would have had some input in Paul's songs and vice versa. So give the kid a chance. Looked it up on Wicki and yes it is solely attributed to McCartney and evrything I just typed is <deleted> but it took a long time to type, so I am not deleting my effort wai2.gif.pagespeed.ce.goigDuXn4X.gif

(Be interesting to see what this post now develops into).

    No

"When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me. Speaking words of wisdom, Let It Be..."

    J. Paul's mother. (Mary)

  4. My husband is always going for me, i don't need to go myself. He just takes my passport, his ID and i think he takes the marriage certificate as well - not sure. Anyway, you do not need to go yourself.

Maybe Immigration would be more amenable because he is a Thai man and you a mere woman in their eyes.

Exactamento! Gandtee ~ A farang female, married to a Thai male, is regarded with a totally different viewpoint @ Thai Immigration. At the end of the day, LOS is really the Kingdom of Thailand wai2.gif.

  5. Thanks George.

You really want to give an ageing man a lousy day when I could make someone happy with their day's wages earned before 7?

George was too busy giving you his typical "know-it-all" lecture, rather than to remain on topic, and give you something useful!

I can't see why not "pay" someone to queue for you. This is Thailand, SEA, and Asians do exactly the same thing, all the time.

So George's remarks, beginning with, "If you were in your own country, etc." is absurd and asinine, as usual.

Your current reality is Thailand. End of story. Good luck, and best wishescoffee1.gif

  6. Phuket Tiger mauls an Austraian.....Hmmmmmm...

What's the tiger doing in Phuket in the first place....think about it eh.....$$$$$ Perhaps?

Sure it is the reason and a sorry one at that...akin to elephants on the streets of BKK

    or Hatyai or.....name your place.

How many of these folks who supposedly know how to "control" a tiger can actually

controll the big cat? Let alone; where did they get their "knowledge" from? None that

I have ever had any contact with. These folks do "dope" the cats...but the dope wears

    off doesn't it. Then what?

Take 400 pounds (or more) of a wild animal and let it mix around with humans of

doubious nature....The "Here Kitty Kitty" may seem appropriate in cartoons but

to the big cat....life ain't a cartoon. And the human always looses. When the mixing

with humans crops up disasters are always gonna happen.

For example....just take your little house cat and let it have a conniption on your

leg or arm/hand.....hurts eh? That little house cat is nothing like a pissed off so called

"use to humans" tIger (or leopard, lion, cheetah etc...etc...) and you don't even

have to let your house cat have said conniption...it will have one when & where it

desires....same as with it's larger brothers & sisters. Can you "read" it's feelings?

I won't go on and on anymore...save to say that any "sanctuary" or park or zoo

or whatever, that allows humans to interact with large (or small) predators should be

permanenty closed and the money they rake in found elsewhare. The big cats are

surely beautiful to see...but not under the conditions most of them are kept in.

And the best advice to pass on to everybody is to boycot these places which

keep these animals as "showpieces'....because it is only about the money and

sweet FA abut anything else...especially anything to do with the animals within.

If one wants to see tigers in their natural habitat PM me & I'll gve you tips on where

to go....but getting there isn't gonna be cheap nor is your stay. You will see tigers

though...that's a guarantee. In the wild. Heaps of them.

I hope the Aussie makes a complete recovery....and holds no grudges against the

tigers....after all....it wasn't their fault they were confined.

FYI - Tigers are indigenous to Phuket.whistling.gif

  7. I read a lot of the comments with people saying tigers belong in the wild and how they are all drugged etc... Both of these comments are not necessarily correct. Tigers and most other big cats lay around and sleep during the daytime due to the heat (a bit like your dog does at home), it's not down to drugs (necessarily) but their natural built in clock. That's why the "playtime" with the tigers is normally about 5pm, when they're wakening. Saying that tigers belong in the wild would be ideal in a perfect World. In Africa and the subcontinent there are wildlife sanctuaries (and in particular, tiger sanctuaries) as the World has lost 97% of wild tigers in just over the last century. If the monks in Chiang Mai are happy to run a sanctuary I say well done. If they charge an admission fee to help cover the costs, fair play. Monks selling them to rich types in China? Please provide evidence.

The Chinese claim that Rhino horns have medicinal properties. As such they pay some stupid bush African up to $10K per horn. The Rhino dies. Now, do you really believe the Chinese are above reproach, by convincing some panhandling monk to sell them a Tiger, for the right price? What comic book version of Thailand are you living in, bloke? Huh?

  8. I agree, he saw something unusual and told everyone.

If I saw a beautiful lady in a wedding dress working at Mac Donalds I think would also be unusual and maybe tell my friends.

Very funny the posters posting to get a life. Is this the pot calling the kettle black? (Maybe American humor)

Apparently, you like to mix apples with pineapples, then claim the two are opposite members of the same fruit family, eh? whistling.gif .

  9. Having lived in LOS for ages I've read and heard about all the police/immigration problems faced by bar owners who have been seen/caught working in their (usually in the TGF's name) bar - either being behind the counter, working the sound system, doing maintenance work or, yes, serving drinks to their friends.

So I can understand why the OP was disconcerted seeing a farang working so openly in a CW food outlet.

Of course there ought to be a very legal reason.

But IMHO no need to send the OP to the TV gallows for asking !!

I reiterate. The OP would be well-advised to find a real life, beginning with minding his own business, for a change! whistling.gif

  10. Put a plastic bag over someones head and there is no marks. Terrifying feeling when you get no air, they would have confessed to anything to stop this barbaric act. Maybe the corrupt assh....le should have water boarded the two young lads. What a complete scam.

Those same "a--holes" also monitor this website. Why not give them even more "torture method" ideas, while you're TALKING. whistling.gif Duh!

  11. Yet again Air Asia manages to mis-handle a situation with a passenger.

Personally, I dislike AirAsia, but as an air carrier, safety regulations, are to be followed to the letter. Had the AirAsia attendants allowed that passenger to remain on-board that aircraft, for any placated reason, then that action would have definitely been the mis-management (as you put it), on their part,wai2.gif

  12. Thai men have a penchant toward "argumentative" shouting (to get their way), especially when dealing with women. That childish (I refuse to be wrong, or held accountable) face saving behavior is integral with Thai culture.

Definitely, the passenger was a moron, but the Flight Service Attendants (had they been properly trained), could have handled that scenario, quickly, quietly and decisively, without all the talk.

Plus, had that scenario taken place, in the US, then that passenger would have spent the next 12-hours of his life, in TSA detentive custody. Just for the "hell" of it, with his name, and behavior being documented in a nationwide database. LOS,.ya gotta luv itcoffee1.gif

  13. As someone has already pointed out it is easy for us on TV to speculate on the cause of the accident based on little or no evidence and judge all and sundry guilty.

What is evident however is that the Phuket Maritime Dept has a major problem on its hands with the boating and tourism industry being poorly regulated and supervised.

Many millions of baht are being spent on a dubious AIS system for a minority foreign cruising while the real safety issue associated with high speed tourist boats is being ignored.

I have said it before in other forums that there needs to be an enquiry into the maritime dept and the management to be held accountable.

    cheesy.gif

  14. The Thai Gov't and all subsequent Thai Gov'ts will no doubt create a successful safety program.

After all, wasn't it just a couple that they developed a cure for Ebola..... as there is no Ebola to be seen in Thailand, so must be successful.

Just like years ago they created a cure for common sense...... ............as there is no common sense .............[fill in the blank]

Indeed, the Thai gov't will (eventually) implement "enforced" Public Health & Safety regulations, just as soon as the Singaporeans arrive, beginning 2015.clap2.gif

  15. how does a high powered boat ram a fishing boat that most probably would only do 10-15 knots

or maybe the driver had the speed boat on auto pilot while he had a sleep

hope he is charged with manslaughter

Being charged with manslaughter, in LOS,cheesy.gif Possessing a sense of accountability, is definitely not a virtue, integral with all Asian cultures. That's just the way it is. Either accept it, or leave itcoffee1.gif
