  1. Hey All! I would like to know if there are any places in Pattaya that teach childbirth preparation classes e.g. Lamaze or other breathing techniques.

    Thanks.

  2. I just ran across the website http://iir.ngi.nectec.or.th/ which seems to have all kinds of interesting statistics but one I found particularly disturbing was the Thailand E-mail Virus Detection Operation Center linked from that page at http://164.115.2.140/mcstat/index.php and Mailcleaner at http://mailcleaner.gits.net.th/

What is Mailcleaner? How are these statistics gathered? Should I have privacy concerns?

  3. Except for maybe Aisawan I rarely see many people on the streets or beaches around the big condos in Naklua (e.g. Saranchol, Park Beach, etc.) and in the evenings very few of the rooms every seem to have any lights turned. I asked some of the motorcy taxi people that hang out in that area and they said the registers in those places are full. I find that kinda hard to believe. Do the people that live there just sit in their dark rooms watching TV? What's the story?

  4. I know it's been said many times before but it's worth repeating: watch your belongings on the songthaews.

Last night while riding a songthaew on Pattaya Klang from Tops towards Foodland I almost had my wallet stolen. Two younger women and an old woman with a little girl all working together -- dark skin, tattoos, a little on the heavy side. I was on alone then they got on and sat a little too close. When they got down from my songthaew the crossed the street to get on a songthaew going back down towards Tops -- my guess is they shuttle back and forth many times.

Also it's possible they are in cahoots with the drivers as they didn't seem to have paid a fare. I hate to be paranoid but I wouldn't put anything past some of those b@stards.

  5. It even wouldn't let me go in 1st gear at a traffic light yesterday and i had to pump it to let it engage so i could move on but worked fine again the rest of the way home just felt slightly soft same as before.  So it's sitting today and i'm on the motorbike.

In an emergency you can shift gears by revving to high RPMs, apply not-very-much pressure towards the gear you want to shift into, then letting off the gas. First it'll ease intro neutral and then it should ease into the desired gear. Don't force it! As the RPMs come down there's a magic point where something syncs up and the car almost shifts itself. Getting it into first is a little trickier, it'll lurch, but it works too -- although its preferable to try and regulate your speed so you can avoid having to come to a complete stop.

DISCLAIMER I'm not a mechanic and I barely understand the parts that make up the clutch. If you break your car I'm really sorry but don't blame me.

  6. Just got back from the 30 July Auction at Pattaya Hill Resort. A bit of technical difficulty with the microphones got things off to a slow start about 30 minutes late, but it allowed some of the stragglers to show up. It didn't matter too much because the auction was over about 40 minutes later. There were about 40 mostly farang bidders in attendance.

Most, if not all, of the 30-or-so lots failed to garner their minimum bids. Disappointing no doubt both for the owners and the bidders whose bids will be submitted "provisionally" for the owners to reject to accept. I didn't take notes so perhaps someone who did can share the actual numbers with us but I clearly remember quotations from the auctioneer like "I'm not afraid to submit any bid [to the owners]" and "This is awful" (sorry if I've got those wrong but they certainly convey the sentiment).

It would be interesting to find out how many of the "provisional" bids are eventually accepted but I suspect we'll only hear reports of "another successful auction" in the press releases masquerading as newspaper articles.

  7. Hi all,

Can somebody tell me an address where I can purchase "Dry Ice" in Pattaya.

            Thanks, Wee Jimmy

You might be able to buy a bit of it from one of it from one of the ice-cream shops that sell ice-cream cakes. (When you buy a cake for take-away they'll pack it in a box with a few pieces to keep it cold.)

  8. Hey All!

I've got a question about beach access and private property. I live down Soi 12 in Naklua and have always used a trail on the property directly south of The Sanctuary of Truth to get down to the beach. This property has an old house that's unoccupied except for a sometimes watchman/security guard. Other than that it's undeveloped.

Recently, someone, perhaps the owner, has been blocking off the driveway with branches and brambles and on of those unfriendly "Privat Property No Tresspassing" signs.

I understand in Thailand that the beach itself is public property, but what about access to the beach? The Sanctuary of Truth juts out into the ocean making access from the north impossible. The closest public road to the south is all the way around on all Soi 16, near the Park Beach condominium .

Lacking a boat what am I to do?

    TIA!

  9. Yes...looks like Penang, there are a few 12,000 baht trips advertised from Pattaya, including flights taxi and hotel. (I pay visa fees). Anyone done this?

I am 50/50 a Cambodia run, am now looking into New Zealand....will post of experiences , as they happen.

    Don't go to New Zealand.

But if you do make sure you buy your air ticket well in advance, pack a large bag, and book your hotel room before you arrive -- else you will find yourself subjected to an extra helping of "hospitality" by the NZ customs service. :o

Anyway, it's winter there now isn't it?

  10. The Pattaya Mail newspaper previously reported that the "the oldest bartering system known to the civilized world will be used to sell 20 new luxury private villas" [1] and also that there were "ninety-eight qualified bidders" [2]. But if both of those are true how is it that only 14 homes got sold? Was it that the 6 remaining villas could not solicit even one baht? Or were there shills involved who accidentally outbid the real bidders? A recent article stated that "MGI then [sold] the seven remaining properties...within 19 days after the auction"? [3] Why 7 and not 6? And why do I still them listed in the local property advertisements? It's all very confusing.
