If you have a yellow house book you should be able to get a ID card at the Amphoe/Khet where you are registered.

Worth investigating. What really piss me up here is if you want to join a number of organization people ask you for a work permit. If you can't show up one, you're automatically categorized as a (short term) tourist and your application isn't even considered. With a local id card, it may change this perception. As I said, worth investigating.

  2. Maybe this question has been answered before but is it possible to get this id card in Bangkok ? District of Chaeng Wattana ?

It can be very useful. There are a lot of places when you need an official id to get in, they exchange it for a pass and you get it back on your way out. I would be much more comfortable to leave a local id card than my passport.

And that is for low power, locally made lead nosed semi-wadcutter 9mm cartridges which Thais call 'practice' ammo.  Imported FMJ 9mm will set you back double that (HPJ double that again) and locally made stuff somewhere in between.  The SWC rounds are fine for target practice and make a nice round hole that is easy to see but, if you are practicing for home defense, you need to practice with the rounds you would actually use.

Due to the higher cost of ammo in Thailand, .22lr is good option.  .22 rifles and handguns are fun to shoot and ammo is usually around B350 a box of 50.

I would like a place you go to as cheap as that near me,  l only shoot a CM about 3 times a year when on a visit, 1,700 for 30 - 45 cal ammo.

Waiting a Thai friend in my village to arrange a visit to police range and an army one not to far from me.

Nice hobby to be able to do.

Unfortunately that's the price in most places open to foreigners. The best shooting ranges I found in Bangkok are operated by the army but foreigners are usually not really welcomed. They are quite strict, and rightly so, about safety rules and foreigners are mostly perceived as a source of trouble. The problem is they make no difference between tourists who just want to shoot for fun and residents who are more serious about their practice.

What's the reason for wanting a blue gun.

l do shooting in a Cm army camp not cheap but good fun.

How much do you pay ?

I pay 750 THB for a box of 50 bullets. 200 rounds this morning = 3,000 THB. I don't consider myself  poor but that's not something I can afford to do everyday.

What's the reason for wanting a blue gun :

Training, practice, drawing, reloading on the fly, reloading while moving, they usually resemble the actual weight so good to practice carry. A very good tool for someone to practice technique with, safely.

And you can also download free app for iPhone. Practice makes perfect

  7. Found this : http://www.gunandguy.net/PROMOTIONS-สินค้าราคาพิเศษ

Unfortunately they don't have the GHOST model that has the advantage to have a removable magazine.

It seems there is a street in Bangkok where you can find everything related to guns and ammunition. I will have a look I may find the gun I'm looking for. And if it's my lucky day I may even get the address of a good shooting range.

  8. Doing some cleaning I just found an old laptop that I haven't use for ages but, oh surprise !, still fully functioning. According to the files inside I stopped using it around 2006 and the last time I started it was 2013.

It's a Sony VAIO, with a 40 GB HDD and 256 MB of RAM. OS is Windows XP !!!

To give it a second life I was thinking of installing a lightweight Linux distro . Before I brick a still functioning computer, any advise about that  ?

I can but it's a question of where to put the pointy end on which I'm rather vague.

    :D

Where to put the pointy end .. great question.

If you haven't figure it out by now I'm afraid I can't help much.

  10. Furthermore nowadays a lot of items are powered through an USB port. It's very easy to replace your standard power outlet with a socket like the model below making adapters redundant

True. The benefits of using ethernet and especially power over ethernet are reliability, security and that there has to be only one cable, which also gives the power to the devices. Local power means having power adapters all over the place.

I'm not sure would it be meaningful to have a 12V or 48V power grid in the house?

I'd most likely do more de-centralized version of the cabling, if that had been my house.

The problem with poe is it can't power everything, I doubt you can power a TV or a fridge over the ethernet. In my opinion security cameras are the only devices that requires poe for the reason you mentioned

Then why would you need a 12V or 48V power grid ?

I don't know if it  answers your problem but one of the advantage of standards like zig bee or z wave over wi-fi or blue tooth is it's very low power consumption. Theoretically devices that respect these standards can work one year or more on battery only, so no need to be connected to the power grid.

  12. I think the IoT provides cool possibilities for us to manage our environments in the future.

For people who wish to do future home automation, Andruido is the way to go.

Check this channel, how to make a smart home. The technology is not that difficult.

    https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjsTk_Ih5Y34vrvFUATcJPxX6_n45GI-J

Very complicated and require a lot of cables. There are specialized wireless network (ZigBee, Z-wave) that do the same thing. Or you can even use bluetooth or wi-fi.

  13. I started installing a few devices, including cameras but my main concern is security. It's nice to be able to see what's going on in your home, check if the windows in the bedroom are close or start the air cond. when you are outside but it's also worrying to know that someone can hack into your system and take control of your house. So one of the first step to consider would be to install a free open source firewall like pfsense.

It would be nice to exchange information and maybe start a local working group on the subject but unfortunately I've doubt that we can find here the right people. Anyway if you (or other) want to discuss the subject feel free to PM me.

  14. Unfortunately this affair sends a very bad signal to the international community. My company works for a major US entertainment company. Each supplier, new or existing, has to pass an annual social audit. The questions asked are basically the same that Mr Hall was asking. Twice a month I have to fly to China to visit our suppliers. Of course I'd love to work with Thailand, that would make my life much easier. Unfortunately if there is even a remote chance that I would end up in jail if I reject an unsuitable supplier because of social issues (and that happens pretty often), I'm afraid I'm still going to collect frequent flyer points for the foreseeable future.

  15. "Never believe numbers you haven't falsified yourself".

I don't believe any numbers issued by TAT.

I was in BKK in early June. Khaosan Road was empty (during the anyways, didn't hang around long), Sukhumwit was pretty quiet and JJ Market had a good number of people, but most were locals and Chinese. Didn't see all those tourists TAT are claiming.

It seems very quiet here in Pattaya too (even taking into account that it's Thai low season).

Although quite alot of Indian & Chinese tourists around.

I think things like: Burma opening up, and Vietnam & Indonesia going towards visa-free travel is bound to have hit tourist numbers for Thailand.

That what our taxi driver was saying the other day. The good time (sic !) when they were able to over charge falang who were taking a taxi straight from the airport to Pattaya is over. Nowadays it's mostly Chinese tourists traveling in group by bus. So the total number of tourists maybe up, and it's good for Thailand as a whole, but the small operators like the taxi drivers or small restaurant and guesthouse owners don't benefit from it, quite the opposite. It's now a business for big tour operators and big retailers like Duty Free.

  16. I built my own. Bought everything from Invadeit.co.th. Final cost for mine was close to 150K baht. Without the game chair and wheel about 100K baht. Didn't get the game chair at invadeit.

What did you get for that price ? When I check specialized website, it seems we can get powerful config (i7, GTX 980, 16GB, ... ) for much cheaper than that.

  17. Are you certain you have your AIS Fiber modem/router and your "switch" properly configured? It almost sounds like a double-NAT issue.

I guess I'd take the "switch" out of the configuration and test/monitor the service with just the AIS device.

For those using Google DNS can you ping/tracert 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4?

I believe too it's more a problem of router / switch configuration but what I don't understand is the relation with the torrents. Because it really seems the problem appears when I try to download more than 2-3 torrents at the same time. Most of the time I have up to 5-6 devices connected to the switch without problem. Then I try to download a couple of torrents (actually around 20), the download goes full throttle, nothing to complain about that, but I lost internet access. Correlation doesn't imply causation but ....

  18. For a project I'm working for I've been allowed a budget of US$ 1,000 / 2,000 to buy a gaming computer. That's a good news. But that brings also a few questions.

1/ Configuration, should I buy a brand name or should I buy a custom made ?

    2/ Where ? Bangkok (where ?) Or online ?

Your suggestion are the most welcomed.

I'm also interested to meet people familiar with OSVR

  19. Drive in a Chinese high speed train and if survived, please report back. Thank you very much for your consideration.

I did a couple of time. Fast, reliable, comfortable, on time. Overall a great experience.
