  1. Problems with mail delivery is not just limited to Thailand. Some 10 years past I had a reoccurring issue with the postal carrier delivering to my home in the US. My house number was 921 and marked clearly by 6" numbers on my house.  This female carrier would leave mail in my box, addressed to the house next door. She would then walk past the intended recipient's home to continue her route. I started out taking the wrongly delivered mail to the neighbor's box. This would occur frequently each week.  Sometimes I would get mail addressed to house 921, one block over. Tiring of this I kept the mail for several weeks and took the colleçtion to the post office.  The clerk, another female, seemed upset that I had not brought the mail in sooner, after it was delivered by mistake.  I informed her that it was the carriers job, not mine to deliver mail. The situation didn't improve. After numerous, tríp taking mail back to the post office, I eventually stop returning the mail. One day, I received two boxes addressed the house 1 block over. I left them on the porch for over a week thinking the carrier would finally realize her mistake. She didn't. I still have a set of aftermarket chrome exhaust extensions for a 90's Ford Mustang.  Mail delivery improved about 12 months later, when she married a wealthy farmer and quit her job.

I recently investigated this. They have a daft rule which states that only the small chainsaws are available for sale in the shops. If you want a larger one you have to get a permit from the forestry dept.

If you go for a smaller one you should go for the 'Stihl' brand. Its the best one and german made. I would not buy any other brand to be honest.

Yes, Stihl is a German brand, but not all their products are made in Germany. They have plants in the US, South America and China. Take a guess as to which country supplies Stihl chainsaws to Thailand. (think logistics) Even their chainsaws sold in Germany have parts supplied from China.

  3. I have loaned money several times over last 3+ years.  I loaned 1200b to wife's cousin to buy an holding steel table to sell produce at the market. Paid back 2weeks later.  Loaned 1500b to single mother neighbor, who works as a custodian at University.  Paid back next pay period. Loaned 2000b to wife's younger sister and her husband to help with the funeral, after the sudden death of his father. It was paid back within a month. Have on several occasions over last 3 years, loaned money to wife's 35 year older sister.  She has always paid back more than she borrowed. She borrowed money in May with repayment due August 1st. I have no doubt loan will be repaid, but told my wife after August 1st the interest charge will be pu**y, payable every 4 weeks while wife is on menses  Wife just laughed.

100% correct! Most will agree, although some durian maniac will pop up shortly disputing it.

Often wondered, who was the first person in history to eat durian? I mean who, when breaking into the thing and being hit with that awful stench, would think of tasting it? Being the first, they had no one to tell them that despite the smell it was really yummy.

My daughter loves it, but I make her eat it on the balcony. I'd love to know what it tastes like, but I just can't get past the smell. I suppose if I was starving I'd kill for some.

Once you get past the smell, you got it licked.

  5. I had a lawyer in Surin prepare some certification documents for me in September. She had lived for 5 years in Minnesota while attending school and spoke English very well. We had a conversation that was initiated by her regarding the Presidential election. She had clearly been following the campaign and was quite knowledgeable in both candidates political agenda and policies. She was adamant that she thought Donald Trump would be elected President and as of today she was right and I was too.

Smaller markets sometimes do have a stand where all different brand/types of remotes are sold for very very reasonable prices. Talking about Bangkok here. Ask a local, that is how I found out and got my brandnew Daikin remote for 240 Baht.

Bring the old or a working one to make sure. The guy I bought it from takes his merchandise from market to market and has fixed days for certain places. I found him (guided by a local) in a covered market a bit back off the north side of Silom road somewhere behind kasikorn bank ( in that area).

If he lost the remote, how can he bring it with him?

Not always the case.  Even though in an international airport before you enter customs, you are still under the "jurisdiction" of that country.  That is why some countries require a transit visa.

I am only familiar with mainland China requiring it, but it appears that Ireland does to for certain countries.

I fly LAX to BKK with a 3-hour layover in Guangzhou China. All you do is go through customs and then to departure gates, no visa. Guangzhou also has a 72-hour visa-free transit, where you can visit the city.

Because there is always another fool ready to lose his money....

But realistically - There are far more success stories than the very small minority of failures... It just doesn't make interesting reading so we hear little of them.

I believe that posters who are so negative about relationships with Thai women probably made poor choices and can't accept it was their fault or accept responsibility for their failure.  Most would probably make the same mistake in their choice, no matter what the ethnicity of the woman.  They are so miserable in their life, they can not stand to read or see of anyone else's success.  Their rants, comments and negative advice to other's is an attempt to make themselves feel better   From experience, I can say that not all Thai women are like the one's they complain about. Anyone can make good or bad choices in life. Those that make bad choices in  women should learn from the experience, move on and accept it.

You all rip the piss out of me and my money saving thread but when people make threads about how many bloody meals they can squeeze out of a chicken they get a free ride..  -

Do i need to be here for a while before i can request tips on saving money with impunity?

I plan to play it by here and stay n Thailand for a few months

I do actually have a lot of cash in my bank account i'm just trying to see how living "cheap" in Thailand will be for me and if its sustainable in the long term as a sorta experiment. I'm 29 years old.

I won't be living in squalid conditions from what i've seen 5000 will get me a perfectly nice room with a balcony.. I probably will be using the aircon.. i probably will be going to mcdonalds or pizza every few days because i cannot help myself

You will spend more at McDonald's and eating pizza than you will on electricity.  Cut those meals in half and you will be able to afford to run the ac.

  10. I bought a 5 stage filter system from Big C one year ago. At that time, the cost was about 1500 baht, they are now just slightly higher.  You can also get similar systems at Tesco, Home Pro and online at Lazada.  The wife also buys 20-liter bottles from a delivery truck for 12 baht a bottle. R/O systems provide good water, but also waste a lot.  Part of every liter that runs through the system goes down the drain.

  11. I have entered at the Chong Chom crossing 2 times. Before you get out of the exit point, people are asking "where you go" and want to take you to get your visa. The first time through, I followed a man and when we got to the entry building he started filling out the arrival card, then wanted my passport. He handed everything to window staff and left. The man at the window wanted 1400 baht for the visa for which I asked for a receipt. His reply "no receipt". As I had not given him the money yet, I told him "no receipt, no 1400 baht". He then refused to take the correct visa charge posted on the website. Well, I then played my hole card. A couple of years prior I had a long distance relationship with a Cambodian women that lived in Houston Texas. During this time she asked me to be her guest at an upcoming friends wedding. So I flew to Houston for the weekend. This friend was also Cambodian, who lived with her mother and brother in North Houston. The father worked in Cambodia and had moved the family to the states several years prior and flew home regulary to be with the family. This gentleman was a secretary for the King of Cambodia. He gave me a card with the royal seal, his name, title and contact information. I opened my wallet and pulled out this card and showed it to the visa staffer. He looked at it, then spoke with the ranking officer. Shortly, my passport was handed back with the visa stamp and I paid the normal charge. My second visit went smoother. I did all the paperwork myself, handed it in with the correct US dollars. The same Captain that had been in charge my first visit even gave me a smile and nod. But I must say, when I went to be stamped out, they asked for 200 baht. I just smiled and said no. Took my passport and re-entered Thailand.

  12. My experience is as follows, here in Ubon when we eat out my wife insists that no tip is necessary, so if she pays that's what happens.

On several occasions I have paid and left a small, 20-30 baht tip and she has been quite annoyed.

Her attitude is the same when we are in Bangkok and Pattaya visiting our foreign friends, but she does accept the Service Charge element where added.

Personally, if I am out alone, I usually tip 20 baht.

Sounds like a great girl. If it isn't her money that she earned she shouldn't say a word about what it is tipped. Did her philosophy about tipping change since she stopped receiving them at whatever bar she was working at?

Your reply is indignant, to imply that this gentleman's wife may have been a bargirl. I believe that you are more than a smartarse, but also a smartarse pr*ck.

  13. What I don't like is that they add the 10% service charge on the total bill, after the 7% VAT has been added. This means they are making 10% more on the VAT, than is reported. I have noticed that some restaurants in the states include "for your convenience", a tip calculation formula of 10%, 15%, 18% and 20% printed on the bill, which also includes the tax. In the states, I ignore these and tip for the quality of service, only on the before tax total. 20% if good, 10% if not.

  14. I have had several flights over past 2 years, from LAX to Bangkok, on China Southern Airlines, with return flights exceeding 30 days, that were made without a visa, I usually get a 30 day on arrival stamp, then get 60 day extension for marriage. There never has been a problem at check-in. I came back in July for 9 month stay, to return next April and during this time I have obtained a multi entry O visa, based on marriage. At the time of my booking, the airline did not list any return flights scheduled past Feb 1. So I booked a Dec 29 return flight, the cost being cheaper. I have since cancelled that return flight and purchased an April return flight. I had no visa this trip, intending to enter on 30 day stamp on arrival. There was no concern from check-in agent, for not having a visa this trip. If by chance your check-in agent were to ask "why you do not have a visa", just tell them you have a side trip planned, to leave the country, during your stay. Too address your concerns, about getting a visa from Los Angeles, on such short notice. Check their website for holiday closings. I have used them in the past and they have very fast service, as long as you follow the website instructions and provide the correct forms, pictures and money order. I live in Missouri and they processed mine and returned by mail, in less than 8 days from my mailing. Being you live in San Francisco you probably can get mail overnight from LA.

  15. put everthing into a plastic bag and seal it. Leave it for at least one week in it......

Or...for me the better option....Throw away your matress you use and buy instead a new LATEX one. No bugs again. Promised!

    Nonsense!

Bedbugs live on blood and can live for months without eating. Changing your mattress will not guarantee a bedbug free room. Bedbugs can hide anywhere, even in other parts of the room or house. There are several ways that I know to kill bedbugs, using insecticides, high temperature or steam and freezing. This being Thailand freezing them is ruled out, which leaves the other methods. Using insecticides will be the easiest, but you will need to fumigate the entire house and leave the house closed up for several hours, to ensure all bugs are dead. An extra benefit of this is, all other insects are killed also. You will need to spray every crack and crevice. Also all clothing, bed linens and towels can be fumigated, then washed or they can be removed from the house before spraying and placed in clothes dryer on high heat setting, for no less than 20 minutes. You cannot kill bedbugs by putting your clothes in plastic bags for 2-3 weeks. Steaming would eliminate the use of pesticides, but will take longer. You would have to go over every square inch of the mattress, bed frame, room and clothes slowly, to allow the steam to kill the bugs and eggs. Myself, if I wanted to make sure all infestation was eliminated, I would use a combination of steam on the mattress and linens, then use pesticide.

  16. I was once told , by a Hari Krishna devotee , that in India in the old days they used burning cow dung to ward of the mozzies, and because anything from the mother cow is sacred then it is okay to use. I never did think to ask how they got the cow dung to burn without using a accelerant like kerosene or mentholated spirits. .

You get cow dung to burn, by sitting it in the sun and letting it dry out. Grass burns if you let it dry out. Dung is only undigested plant material.
