  1. I have a 5 stage drinking water filter system. It does not have UV or reverse osmosis. After installing, I let about 5 gallons flow through the system. Letting the system set overnight, I then used an approve water test kit I bought from Amazon. The results of the tests were all within US water standards with the exception of water hardness, being a little high. This was corrected by adding an alkaline filter. The water is from the local village well 9 km's NE of Surin.

unfortunately the most important criterion, namely harmful bacteria, can't be checked with a water testing kit.

I have being following this thread with great interest . It is a subject that I am concerned with in Thailand, right now not a problem, as I only spend a few months at the time in Thailand, but in a couple of years when I retire and spend more time there, certainly a subject I need to get better educated on,

a lot of good information in this thread, and I like to say I appreciate it.

I did a search on google "water bacteria test" and it seems that there are a lot of inexpensive bacteria testing kits. not sure how available in Thailand.

    Any way, great thread.smile.png

You are correct about water test kits checking for bacteria. The kit I purchased from Amazon was a 9 step kit including tests for ph, water hardness, pesticides, nitrate/nitrite, lead, chlorine, hardness, iron/copper and bacteria.

  2. My system brand is Colandas and was purchased at Big C Surin last year. They are now selling another brand that looks very similar. I have seen similar products at Home Pro, Global House and other home stores. My system was originally 5 stage filtration and I added the limestone filter later. It is a drinking and cooking water system only and can not be used as a whole house system. Whole house filters basically remove sediment and larger particles from your water for bathing and clothes washing and have a high volume flow. Drinking water filters remove particles 5 microns and smaller. A micron is 1000th of a millimeter. They do not have a high volume output to supply water fast enought to bathe or fill a washer. Also the water pressure in your line is a factor on how long it takes to fill a glass of water. Lazada website has Colandas and several other similar brands. Colandas replacement filters cost around 500 baht a set. Some people recommend reverse osmosis systems, but you waste a lot of water that by-passes the membrane and goes down the drain, as much as 25 to 50 percent. Also with reverse osmosis systems you have to have sufficient water pressure for the system to work properly. I think after you install any cartridge filter system you should have the water tested, then make any changes to improve water quality if needed.

  3. The close grouping of the bullet holes would indicate someone who is proficient in guns. Perhaps army or police training or someone who frequents gun ranges

Not necessarily. If you look at the video he was standing right in front of the windshield of the stopped car when he was shooting, he was not on the mc. Less than a meter away from target. I thought the same thing until I saw the video. At that distance, you could close your eyes and probably group it. smile.png

I disagree with you. The shots were fired so quickly. Anyone inexperienced would have lost their Ain even at close range due to the kickback. This shooter is no stranger to firing a weapon

Not that quickly and he is in a two hand stance with a semi-auto most likely 9mm to keep the gun rise down. The first 4 shots were actually quite slow, the last 3 he sped it up. At that distance the spread is actually pretty wide considering he was nearly on top of the windscreen, I could do that at 50+ yards, but than I'm military trained. I'm not saying it isn't as you state but saying you don't have to be that proficient with a firearm to do that at that distance.

However, the sheer cold bloodiness of it may be a hint to the type.

Not that quick or accurate for some, but he did fire 7 shots in about 5 seconds. Granted the shot grouping was not very tight (it probably could be covered with sheet of copy paper), but this could be the result of being nervous, unable to see the sights due to surrounding lighting conditions ( being it was dark with multiple streetlight, headlight glare and the blinding muzzle flash after the first shot), then the shooter just pointing the gun and firing. That being said even with military or police training, most shooters would probably not be able to shoot a pattern this size with a semi-auto handgun at 50 yards, shooting offhand and firing 7 rounds in 5 seconds even in the daylight. Except maybe you and myself 25 years ago. I once fired 6 rounds at six 9 inch round steel plates spaced 20 inches apart on their centerlines, from a distance of 25 feet away. My weapon was a Colt Government Model 45 acp loaded with 220 gr. semi-wadcutter hand loads. The weapon was holstered with the safety on and on the buzzer, I drew, fired and knocked down all 6 plate in less than 3.4 seconds. I started my training with a Daisy Red Rider, shooting Sparrows in my Grandma's chicken coop at the age of 9.

  4. Compound bows are banned from competitions. They're used for hunting.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archery

WRONG! If you are going to solely rely on Wikipedia you would be wrong. Not being an archer or bow hunting enthusiast or an expert on competition rules I do know that compound bows at this time are not allowed in Olympic events. But, there are other archery competitions in the USA, Europe and other countries that do allow compound bows to be used. Now if you had Googled "compound bows in competition" instead of Wikipedia "archery" you would have known the real facts.

  5. The mo chit mafia taxis are the one thing I honestly dislike about Thailand. They sit with their lights off, so they are technically on break all night. They ask 1500 baht for a 90 baht trip. If you try to hail another driver they stand near you to drive them away. Then they sit in a group laughing at you and suggest you start walking. Creeps, not blaming the victim but she never should've hopped in that cab.

A few years back I regularly got a taxi from mo chit, some could speak English and they were always pleasant to me. I think you'll find that the case today too. Don't tar everyone with the same brush. The 1,500 baht for a 90 baht ride, side to your story seems far fetched. Maybe like your post portrays of you as a person also rubbed off on taxi drivers who gave you a lift. They drove you round the houses because you drove them into a rage with you anti-Thai bs.

On my last trip from MoChit bus terminal to my hotel near OnNut BTS, I had to stand in a queue. As the taxi's pulled up, riders were directed to which taxi to get into. The fare was metered and was less than 300 baht. This was last March.

  7. More on the NZ drug scene, a film is being made about Maoris abusing prescription drugs. The working title is "Once Were Worriers".

Oh? I have seen a movie from New Zealand with that title and from at least 10 years back. I( this a sequel or did you read about it in an old magazine? The movie I saw was not specifically about abusing prescription drugs. It was about a cultural attitude and none too complimentary!

No, you could not have seen a movie by that title. Halloween's comment was a play on words. But, there was a movie titled "Once Were Warriors", released in 1994. There was also a sequel.

  8. Trump has Dems and establishment Repubs shaking in their boots...he has not been bought and paid for by the Repubs and this scares them...he will likely actually get some much needed legislation thru Congress which scares the Dems...

Shudder? Many are jumping for joy!

Like trying to deport 10 million Latinos, ripping them out of their homes and families, and start a race war? Can't wait!

Mexican Ex-Presidente Fox is right in saying he's an American Hitler. Help us stop this madness!

Are you referring to the over "10 million illegal immigrants" from Mexico and Central America that the current administration has allowed to stay in the US. If there is a race war it will be because Obama has fanned the flames with his stance on black lives matter.

  9. This is why you should only rent from a reputable car rental company, even if their rates are higher.

I would suggest that his insurance does not cover the car being rented and is insured for personal use only. (see if you can check this). If this is the case tell the owner that if he insists on you paying for the time the car is off the road, then you will inform the insurance company that you were renting the car and he will have to pay for the repairs himself. This happened to a friend of mine and he told the owner that he was not going to pay for the time the car was off the road and he didn't. This is a scam operated by small time car rentals, they conveniently forget to say anything about this possible cost when you rent the car.

I think you will find that even reputable rental car agencies have this same clause in their contracts. Most major rental companies have a loss of use clause in the contract that states the renter is responsible for any loss of use that occurs during the rental period, whether he is at fault or not.

  10. Funny how the sheep are cheering for their own enslavement !

    1. Helmets are for PERSONAL safety and as such should be a PERSONAL choice

    2. Helmets do NOT make traffic more safe !!!

Samui has no bigger problems I guess ... but that's not so popular like the Helmet-band-waggon BS !!!

Yes, helmets required by law are for personal safety and some riders personal choice is not to wear one then complain about having to pay a fine for not doing so. Either you do not care for your own personal safety or you have no respect for the law or maybe both. I chose to wear a helmet for my own protection and that makes it legal for me to ride. Been doing it for over 45 years. I also wear my seatbelt and require my passengers to also. I feel safer and it saves me money if I didn't. That's not BS.

  11. Wife and I live northeast of Surin and have 3 Mango trees. One has flowered and now has fruit about the size of a golfball. The other two have not flowered yet. Last year, I went back to the states in early April and all the trees had flowered and had fruit. When I returned in mid-July all the fruit had been eaten. We have had less rain than last year. Some of the other trees in our area have fruit, others do not.

  12. " Forgetting to take out travel insurance prior to her trip '..... No, not forgetting, wanting to save

a $100 or thinking that, nothing will happened TO ME... what an expensive trip it turned out

to be.. would anyone learn anything from it? I doubt it very much.....

$100 ? Guess I got screwed cause I paid closer to $800 for 6 months travel insurance

My US bought policy is less than $100 for coverage from last July thru this April.

This man lived for 36 years longer than the man he killed, when robbing a convenience store in 1979. His partner also received the death penalty and was executed in 1985. The killer and his lawyers used every legal means they good to save and prolong this murderers his life. The victim was 35 years young, married and had a young daughter. He died the day before fathers day June 1979. Justice finally served.

The killer probably did not have too much of a say in it.

More a case of the lawyers used every legal means to line their own pockets.

Who paid the lawyers? Do you think the killer had accumulated great wealth robbing convenience stores and killing employees or did he save his prison wages for legal fees? The man and his accomplice were both arrested inside the convenience store in the storeroom with the victims body. He had been shot 4 times. Two guns were found and gunpowder residue was on both men. Each blamed the other for killing the clerk. This man and his partner in crime were both sentenced to be executed in 1979. His partner had his sentence carried out by electric chair. (which some people say was cruel) In 1989 prior to his sentence being carried out, a federal judge ordered a new sentencing trial because in the original trial the jury had a Bible during deliberations. So 8 years later in 1997, he was again sentenced to death. This time, death to be by lethal injection. His years on death row facing execution were extended by legal challenges against the use of lethal injection. This killer was not an innocent man who had been wrongly convicted, for a crime he did not commit. He was found guilty, sentenced to death (twice) and it was finally carried out. His age at the time of his death makes no difference to me.

  14. Just to be on the sure side. You do clean all the places and surfaces he have been in contact to? All that can be washed should, and if not then throw it.

Yes, do make sure your family and other pets are not exposed. Best to quarantine the dog and avoid physical contact during treatment, till all symptoms are gone. If it is skin mites, they are parasites and humans can be hosts.

  15. You don't trust their diagnostic skills?

Yet you believe a clogged filter will cause intermittent probs.

    Clogged is clogged.

    Every Somchai knows that.

Maybe not so much on a motorcycle. But on older cars that had clogged on restricted inline fuel filters, some engines would run fine under normal acceleration, but would lose power from fuel starvation under load or at higher speeds. GM cars that had a very small filter in the carb inlet where the worst.

  16. It would help if you had specified what year the Honda Wave is… more modern Wave's are equipped with fuel injection and the fueling system is less serviceable… but the EFI models have a fuel filter in the fuel tank.

The Honda Wave with carburetor is one of the easiest four-stroke motorcycles to service. If you have a Wave equipped with a carburetor and have fueling problems it's possible that the float in the carburetor is not replaced with a float that can tolerate ethanol fuel. The use of ethanol fuel will effect all rubber and plastic parts that come into contact with the fuel.

I think he was clear on what type of fuel system his bike had in the first sentence.

  17. duty free or not has nothing to do with it.

you can't board an aircraft with liquid over the stated regulations. it does not matter if you have already been searched or not. if they are found on the plane you also forfeit.

same goes for any other prohibited items you may be carrying.

This is somewhat not correct. I have flown to Bangkok from Los Angeles numerous times over last 2 years. You cannot pass US TSA checkpoints with liquids over the allowed amounts. But food or drinks you purchase prior to boarding can be taken on the plane. Also in LAX the Chinese passengers buy a lot of expensive liquor at duty free. Prior to boarding, the sealed packages are brought to the boarding area and handed out. All this liquor in taken onto the plane.

  19. Concerning "Kipling: you are not quite right. (it's never too late to learn)

Real Mahouts (the name comes from Hindi) you can find still in India. And - they spend their whole life with their elephants - even NOWADAYS. The reason for this is that most of the elephants we saw belong to the government. And the government can pay for their soldiers (!). They treat "their" elephants like "friends" and care for them as friends. Some stay even at night with them. But this is today unusual though.

So Kiplings picture is still alive. Somehow. Somewhere. (Attached a photo)

I always assumed elephants would be a common sight in India, but there are only a few places in the country where you can really see them (and ride them), and Jaipur is one of them.

    IMG_9974b.jpg

I just don't think you understand the significance of my use of the name Kipling. He was an imperialist who wrote extensively about India in "glowing" and poetic terms - one of things he did was glorify some of the humbler working people.

In reality this image is distorted - and it appears you accept this distortion. Being a mahout used to be a common job in India - NOWADYS irit is not. Furthermore the relationship depicted by writers like Kipling is not necessarily true.

The reality is that being a mahout involved - and still involves - a mixture of folklore, superstition and a little bit of practicality.....but little or no science....or appreciation of the natural behaviour of an elephant.

It has always involved breaking in practices that are frankly barbaric and cruel beyond belief it also has a way of dealing with musth that seems unbelievably cruel - they starve and deliberately dehydrate the animals - this has been shown to shorten the musth, but causes hu=ge distress to the animal.

Being a "mahout" - even a traditional long-term one - doesn't guarantee or imply that the elephant is being treated well - in fact it still involves inflicting pain every day as a form of dominance and discipline....in India all in the name of ceremony.

..and while you're at it check out the number f elephants Hannibal used - it will put matters in perspective

Man, your quotes makes me laugh. You are very smart. You answer just because you want to be RIGHT even you are not. You can't accept if anybody got a different point of view or a different opinion.

I don't know you but I suppose you had a miserable life or still have it now.

The only satisfaction you will have is writing smart quotes. I reckon you live alone, do you? No friends?

But anyway, enjoy your day with a healthy glass of mineral water.

Sawade, you cannot win this pissing contest with him. He had the same battle with "folkguitar" several months ago when an elephant killed a mahout. It will never be the elephants, tiger or any other animals fault. He places the welfare of an animal above the death of another man. If he didn't he would have ceased his ranting several posts ago. The original story was about the death of a man. Posters should have sympathy for this man's untimely death. his daughter and surviving family. Any other topic discussion is disgraceful.
