  1. Huh! they say they "love " dogs yet look at the state of them, on top of that anyone who really loved their dog wouldnt let it wander the streets yet as usual they are too lazy to exercise them just let it out into the road to cause carnage and crap all over.

Sadly a good thread re an article in the Bangkok Post was closed yesterday with a Thai writer commenting on "The easy way" ....ie LAZY.

in your opinion of course. Love the quote to lazy you obviously not know about thai work culture. But please carry on living in your bubble. As for dogs think you will find most dogs who wander belong to no one soi dogs or village dogs that are just fed by locals. Lazy 5555555555

My bubble doesnt include free rosy spectacles

The author of the Thai easy way was WASANT TECHAWONGTHAM you can look up the BKK post article.

Village dogs with "collars" wander the streets daily throughout the villagers round here usually 5pm onwards and early morning.

Thai workculture? sound like youve bought it hook line and sinker

Don't have to buy culture it's my culture. I work hard 6 days a week so my family does as well. We have three dog all well looked after all walked everyday on lead after we finish from work. You know nothing of my culture exept what you read and see on here thank you.

Your culture kills 13000+ a year on the road......do you think thats acceptable as thats mostly lazy driving? As for walking your dogs you are the exception not the rule

Why you change dicussion from animal cruelty to animals dying on road!!!!!!. You say lazy driving up to you if you want to carry on thinking that your welcome Luckly I know better. You should come to my village you will see it is the rule here not the exeption. But sure you sit looking at TV for your facts. Small small view but seem to think everything written is rule must be true Farang say so 555555. Time maybe to get out of house and use your eyes

I think that some people need to be less parochial and get out of their own country from time to time and look around. They will see that Thailand has one of the worst dog problems in the world and has the worst anti-cruelty/animal protection laws of just about any country I can think of. The laws are worse than other countries had 100 years ago......do you want to put that down to Thai culture?

You make me 5555 get out of Thailand from time to time yes please millions want to go on holiday but on 300 bht a day manual worker cannot. You pay for us to go thank you.

Please do you read and think about what you write or type as and see what comes out.??????

As for animals dying one of the worst cruelty rates in the world I really do not care I look after my and some village dogs and cats. I can not protect every animal in my country. Let's face it farangs don't do to much better do they pay to go kill a big cat or Elephant for sport. But I suppose that's ok cos they have money and can do anything in anyone's country for money yes!!!!! Maybe you come here for that!!!!!

What an appalling answer; factually inaccurate and full on baseless assumptions.

first - "As for animals dying one of the worst cruelty rates in the world I really do not care" - REALLY?? - Well, is this kind of "I'm alright jack" attitude why there is so much animal cruelty in Thailand?

    - "I can not protect every animal in my country." - again Why not? this attitude would explain why Thailand has virtually NO animal protection laws at all.

    - "Let's face it farangs don't do to much better do they pay to go kill a big cat or Elephant for sport" - To suggest that this disgusting "activity" is only carried out by "farang" just goes to show how utterly ignorant this poster is of the situation facing wildlife around the world....the biggest single threat to flora and fauna everywhere is TCM - main consumers are China and Southeast Asia....who are heavily involved in the extinction of several keystone species - Tiger, Elephant Rhino etc etc.

as for "money" - it is the bourgeoning middle classes of China and neighbouring countries that still believe in TCM crap that is leadsing to the huge criminal trade in endangered species.

I might point out that Thailand's involvement in this trade has on several occasions put them in CITES bad book with thee threat of major sanctions being imposed that could cost the country trillions of baht.

remeber Thailand is BNOT a poor country - it just has poor people thanks to bad distribution of wealth.

  3. Using the expression "culture" is not nowadays an acceptable defence. No culture is static and all are very difficult to define - yet people try to use it as some kind of get out clause.

Some "truths" are inescapable regardless of culture - the world is not flat, cannibalism is out and so is cruelty to animals and destruction of the environment.

Furthermore conservation environmental and wildlife issues do not stop at national borders - what does sometimes stop is the knowledge and will to deal with it....

Thailand is already getting a reputation as an international pariah due to political, human rights, poor policing, destruction of natural resources and animal cruelty......trying to hide behind "culture"is not an excuse; it just makes the nation look worse.

  4. Another poorly designed form to join the long list of poorly designed and confusing forms that the Govt come up with.

Why are you saying 'The Government'------------- Do any of you stupid people who send in stupid answers ever read what the thread is all about. This is a form sent out by the request (or demand) of one (ONE!!!!) immigration qfficer. It is NOT even from the Immigration Dept as such, just one man. They will not get any personal data that is not relevant from me.I could on the other hand fill up the form and a few extra pages with all the bars and eating places that I frequent, football grounds, favourite towns and places that I go to sometimes at week ends,Temples that have monks in them that always seem to be pleased to see and talk to me.I also like to do the occasional bit of window shopping at various big stores where I get a coffee and meal if hungry. There are lots of other info like this, hobbies etc that I am happy to provide info on.How am I doing so far????????????????

Anyone in immigration is an agent of the government - anything they say is consequently "the government" - anyone who has spent more than 24 hours in Thailand will realise that one of the most common ways of laws/regulations being introduced or changed is by dictum usually from one (overzealous?) person.....

You are exactly one of the people I was referring to in my first sentence--------------- this form does not come from a government organisation------- its a one man band from one office----------- Clear now???????????????????coffee1.gifcoffee1.gifcoffee1.gif

..and that office is? clear now???

  6. Foreigners recognise your rights you are only obliged to give details of where you are staying and how long you have stamped on your travel document. The rest is not anyones business. They cannot control their own lot...let alone follow up on the local crimes, they are thinking of international.....Good luck

They can do what.ever they choose to do. They can refuse you a visa and your embassy won't lift a finger in your defence. You forget where you are living and who is in charge. Telling them they have no right to know will get you nowhere except into deep doo-da.

Actually if the majority of expats REFUSED to fill in the form, even the Dept immigration might get the impression that the exercise is not acheiving anything worthwhile..unless they want to get rid of a bunch of skilled workers out of their industry.

What do the Japanese and others have to do with these forms?

  7. it seems that these forms - if completed - are going to be susceptible to a plethora of different creative responses...... multiple addresses, cars from around the world, I think maybe the dept has underestimated the amount of information that could be added to these forms if one complies to the letter....they would be totally swamped by the extra paperwork......but these practicalities are never considered in this sort of one-man dictum, are they?

  8. Tigers as a danger to humans is a complete red herring.

They benefit us far more than any danger they are irrationally perceived to present .

the Tiger is an apex predator of a large eco-system. They don't exist as a species in isolation - if they exist it means the whole eco-system is working properly.

this includes other animals the plants and even the rivers and topography.

the results are such things as clean air, clean water which we as humans rely on, un-degraded forests a natural habitat. the process is seen under the heading "trophic cascades" which has demonstrated that the loss an apex predator in an eco-system can have far reaching consequences - even the total collapse of that system.

  9. Huai kha Khaeng reserve is about 40 years old......the "increase" in numbers is describes as "fragile"

The WORST aspect of this is that this is the very reserve that is under threat by the Mae Wong Dam project the the government is so fond of......so all their work could be undone at the stroke of a pen.

  10. They are not going to let the car into Vietnam, Pini.

now almost 2 years later - any news on this fact - there are new laws about ASEAN-countries - thanks to all - want still to drive our own thai-car-thai-numberplates with valid driving-license etc. etc. through laos into vietnam!

I have been told by a good friend of mine, former senior immigration official from Myawady, opposite Mae Sot in Kayin/Karen State of Myanmar that the Burmese are currently in the process of considering to open up their country to foreign registered vehicles (Thai and possibly other ASEAN), while a Cambodian travel agency told me that the car passport can now be used for Cambodia (which is not true).

If you had been following the news recently, particularly the Bangkok Post article from Mar 15, I wouldn't be surprised if those countries with which Thailand does NOT share an existing agreement on the exchange of traffic rights will be banned from driving on Thai roads soon, particularly Vietnamese (who haven't been allowed in all along anyway) and Cambodian, Burmese and Chinese, unless they have made pre-arrangements for driving here.

If this rule comes to affect Vietnamese, Burmese and Cambodian vehicles, then I can see those countries possibly tightening up the rules further for Thai vehicles. On the other hand, it could also be a catalyst to get them to sign an agreement with Thailand in which case everyone would benefit.

Of course China won't be signing any agreement with Thailand so Chinese vehicles will soon be off Thai roads, especially campervans/motor homes and motorcycles, but even cars won't be able to come easily anymore. Which is very fair, because Thai vehicles can't easily enter China and the Chinese have been abusing the easy entrance privileges for a long time.

"Of course China won't be signing any agreement with Thailand" - what makes you say that?

apart from anything China is responsible for building a load of road and rail links that hope to use Laos, Thailand and Burma to give western Chinese commerce access to ports on the andaman.

Western China is landlocked effectively and there is certainly a lot of benefits to them if they can get easy access through AEC/ASEAN countries.

  11. Incorrect my friend. At 13 degrees of latitude north of the equator, the sun will be directly overhead Bangkok around 27th April as it tracks toward the tropic of cancer. Then again late in August as it makes its way back again. At both equinoxes, the sun is directly above the equator. At the northern hemisphere summer solstice, the sun is directly overhead through tropic of cancer.

Not the hottest time of year yet. .

    Yes - I stand corrected........
I'd recommend the Sun Clock scrensaver from mapmaker.com. The free version is ok in showing the position of the sun as the seasons progress. Interesting to watch while on phone in the office. I liked it so much that I ended up buying it to get the advanced features.

You'll have noticed at noon today that shadows were cast at around 13 degrees from the vertical, 13 degrees being Bangkok's latitude north of the equator, where the sun is now directly overhead. Check again on April 27th.

I checked yesterday and realised I'd made a mistake......

unfortunately that screensaver doesn't appear to be available for Mac OSX

  13. just don't try.

thais had their own bit of trouble with the vietnam incident.

ww2 happened 80 years ago, time to let go and focus on stuff happening today.

for you and me - involved or directly related to people involved, this might be different.

but why would a 35 year old thai be interested in adolf, winston and josef?

History and geography are two of the most misunderstood subjects--well what a line of feces. So are reading, writing, and speaking; not to mention math, science, and even social studies.

I keep thinking of George Carlin, "Think of how dumb the average person is; then realize half of them are dumber than that." People are dumb and they don't care.

However, I know Thais and farangs--even Brits--who are knowledgeable, but not many. Some people even think WWII started in 1939--or as you say, 80 years ago.

WW1 started in 1917 and WW2 started in 1941. It`s true, ask any American and they don`t lie.

To most of the Thai population in Thailand during the war the Japanese occupation was just a minor irritation and most did not realise or cared that we were at war at all. Even back then they found ways of making money, passing food over the wires to Australian and British POWs for a price. It`s true, it`s all written in the history books. There were some Thai resistance fighters fighting with the allied forces not on behalf of Thailand, but many more collaborated with the Japanese. This is why there have been very few Thai war films and is a topic they would rather not mention. Probably the reason why Thais are not educated about WW2. Maybe it`s best not to know what granddad did in the war.

Ah, my poor mislead soul, WWI started in 1914, but WWII did start in 1941. The war in Europe started in 1939. The Japanese and Chinese were at war in 1937. However, in 1941 the Western hemisphere and Oceana were forced into war, to make it a truly world war. Until then it was two regional wars; one in Asia and another in Europe. The Brits got their commonwealth countries—primarily Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, etc., involved in their European war in 1939—I dare say they needed the help.

Dates, dates ,dates...but what of the events that lead up to those dates - no-one got out of bed one morning and thought "I think I'll start WW2, did they?. Take ofr instance the Japanese occupation of China in 1931 and what lead up to and followed from that? Dates are not history or even true understanding - they are something that school kids are forced to learn by teachers who don't know their job.

  14. It's especially parochial to suggest that the Thais are negligent in not knowing about the European theater of WWII.

I'm not sure who here is complaining about Thais not being aware of the EUROPEAN theater of WWII. I certainly wasn't.

I was questioning, for the average Thai, the seeming lack of knowledge about ANYTHING related to WWII, including their own role it in and/or the broader WWII presence in Asia.

    Likewise:

Americans would be shocked to learn that the decisive battles of WWII in Europe were fought between the Russians and the Germans.

I'm an American and I'm NOT shocked to be aware that there were decisive battles in the war between Russia and Germany. Whether those were more or less decisive than D-Day, I would say, is a matter of opinion.

    Likewise:

The US waited on the sidelines until the eleventh hour and then rushed in to snatch the prize, the Mid-East oil, from the British.

This last item seems particularly bereft of reality. The war effectively ran from fall 1939 until fall 1945. The U.S., after admittedly being reluctant to get involved in the early European events, declared war on Germany and Japan in Dec. 1941 in the wake of Pearl Harbor. What ensued was almost four full years of full U.S. involvement in WWII to its conclusion and thereafter with occupations in Germany and Japan. That's hardly waiting "until the eleventh hour" in the overall course of WWII.

"The war effectively ran from fall 1939 until fall 1945" - there go those dates again....both German and Japanese aggression as well as other countries in Asia started before that and the aftermath of the "wars" was a long drawn out affair. The Euro-centric view tends to adopt dates based on their own countries' declaration of war....this ignores prior events and subsequent issues.

All this makes it much more difficult for Westerners to see the events surrounding OUR name "the Second World War" through the eyes of Thai people or other Asian countries, whose involvement was different and at different times.....

  16. More Thais, through forced labour, died on the Burma railway than all the Western POWs put together. The same applied to the ones who were forced to construct roads, such as from Mae Teng to Pai etc.

Very simple - prove it. There's no evidence whatsoever anywhere that any Thais were employed either willingly or as forced labour on the Death Railway. None were forced to construct roads anywhere in the country.

Three times the amount of Asians (180.000) compared to POWs (60,000) - including Thais - lost their lives on this railway. The Japanese used both civilian Asians labourers and military as forced/slave labour and the Thai government under Phibun acquiesced to this. The word "romusha", literally labourer, became basically a euphemism for forced labour or slave.

if you don't accept this - and it is held as true by all historians who have studies this - then it is up to you to put forward the evidence you have to refute this. As it goes against all the accepted figures for the last 8 decades I suspect you don't have such evidence - but rather than just gainsaying, it is without doubt your job to supply backup to your proposition.

  17. I was in a bar in Pattaya years ago.The girl behind the counter was a pleasing enough person. She could speak a little English.I Noticed a tattoo on her forearm. It was the picture of a well know south east London team.Underneath that was a guy's name.Underneath that was a Nazi swastika. When i told her what the latter symbolised, she simply didn't believe me. She told me that"Terry' had the same football tattoo. He told her that the Swastika was a very fashionable, must have tattoo that all the English and American women were wearing.

So,she is now marked for life, unless her next ferang will pay for laser treatment, by some, ignorant, stupid, English football thug.

    What a prince.

as everyone should know by now, the swastika is a very old symbol. It was adapted by many religions and leaders over the centuries especially in the East.......it only has the Nazi connotations to those with a western perspective.

As said before "Sawasdee Khap" and "Swastika" have the same origins - are you going to stop Thais from saying this introduced greeting? They could return to the old one still in use in Laos "sabai Dee"
