    Curious about this, also. How?

On the date or even a day or two before your visa expires, do a border crossing that will give you another 90 days. Before the 90 day entry expires, visit immigration and extend for another 60 days to visit your wife at a cost of 1900 baht.

Awesome thanks. Maybe you could help with another question I have.

after I activate my next 90 days my Multiple Entry Visa will expire. Would I still be able to travel in and out of Thailand until the end of my 90 days?

You can get a single re-entry permit that will keep the remainder of your 90 day entry valid when you return form your trip.

  3. First off my wife is based in PP so I travel there often and recently spent almost 2 months at our apt in BKK1 in the same area as your hotel.  The Thai consulate in PP can be unpredictable in terms of their requirements, so I am not surprised.  I don't believe you are being scammed, but rather the Khmer way of needing to use a competent fixer to get anything (as an expat) accomplished with a Cambodian gov't office has infected the Thai consulate as well.   I would contact another agent or security outside the consulate itself.

    Nobody paid anything.

A person showed his bank book by mistake thinking it was needed because he read the notice for a multiple entry tourist visa that requires 200k baht in the bank to get the visa.

That is most likely what happened and when asked to photograph the notice, that he claimed was posted at the consulate in Savannakhet, he did.  The only problem is that 200K baht was a requirement for those applying for a MULTIPLE ENTRY TOURIST VISA.  When called out on his mistake, instead of admitting he made one, decided to lie, claiming that he accidentally took a photo of the wrong notice and then disappeared from the the ridiculous FB thread that he started.

When they say visas in that article I am certain they mean extensions of stay.

I would guess most of those individuals would not be able to apply for a non-o visa at any nearby location since they are on the list of countries that can only apply for visas in their home country.

This list says tourist visas but it is really for all visas. http://vientiane.thaiembassy.org/upload/pdf/RestrictedCountries2013.pdf

Thanks Joe, my mind is on overdrive trying to figure out why there was a report of funds needed on the Isaan FB group.

    Ok well it's confirmed....

    Bullshit

Asked the guy who gave me my passport. Exact conversation went like this:

For a multi entries non o marriage visa do we need to show 200k bank book?

He repeated, marriage non o multiple show funds?

    Mi dawng cup.

So there you have it. In the next week or 2 i see a few people plan on going so they will also confirm this.

    Enjoy!

    Edit:

This was all without him even looking at my passport or asking what nationality. Seemed it didn't matter

I understood the conversation between jabsjabs and the Consulate employee.    "He repeated, marriage non o multiple show funds?    Mi dawng cup (translation: no need, krap).

I would have probably wrote it like this Mai dtawng, krab, but no big deal, I think many understood.  The Consular employee answered the query in Thai that there is 'no need to show funds'.

I am in savannakhet right now for non o visa. Went to Thai embassy/consulate today 9am.  There was about 6-8 other guys getting non o marriage visa in the small line up.

Not one single mention or word to any of us today. Each person in front of me (and including me) walked up, gave the required copies and money and got our slips to pick up tomorrow.

The other people i saw having troubles and asking for bank slips were the LAOS nationals. 2 of them need bank slips for the last  6 months. There was 3 Indian guys in the front too that left with all their papers. Dunno what went on or what visa they were going for but didn't seem like non o marriage visa kind of guys.

Great report; is it possible that the reports on the Isaan FB forum are bogus?

Ok, so thank you for the replies, If I was confusing. I will start again.

    I Have a O Class.

Usually I fly away to work before the 90 days have finished. Hence I do not thing about it,  I return when ever.

This time however, I am going to be here for over the 90 day period. So my question still stands, can I go to a border, walk over and back in the same day / immediately, or not?

Also if I am able to do this, is there a limit on the "out/in" for an "O" Class visa holder?

I cross over regularly at Mae Sai/Tachilek and there is no limit with a Multi entry visa on how many times in a year you cross over and back.  If you cross on a non holiday weekday you could be through immigration on both sides and back in 5 minutes.  Take a crisp $10 U.S dollar bill for entry into Myanmar (don't ask Burmese immigration, just hand it to them).

  9. Ubonjoe is correct, Kan Air is for now (maybe permanently) not flying.  They had 3 planes; the ATR 72 which they used for long distance flights like CNX - UBP route, the 6 seat Beechcraft Premier 1 which I flew on from CNX - HHQ (certainly unprofitable flying 6 pax paying as low as 1900฿ each) and the Cessna Caravan which they were using to fly to Pai, Mae Hong Son, CR etc.  I don't know what they did with the Premier, but the ATR has a problem with a prop and they haven't fixed it for almost 2 months so they were down to the Caravan and now that also has an issue with one of the propellers.  Since they are actively fishing around looking for a deep pocketed investor, I suspect the current competitive climate they are in is unsustainable long term unless they expand or somehow change their business model. There is a notice on their website stating that "...We are unable to provide services at this time..."

  10. I agree that driving BK - MUK - CM would be extremely tiring.  I have done the trip three times from Nakhon Phanom airport (KOP) to the friendship bridge with my wife.  First time we took the bus (never again) from the airport to the bus station and caught the minibus to the border.  The second time taxi from the airport and minibus to the border. Third time, taxi from the airport direct to the border and back a few days later and this is what I will do next year as well. I would recommend taxi from the airport to the border and back if comfort is the main concern, not that expensive, actually price was similar to fly and ride with Nok Air for two.

I don't understand this "throwaway ticket" mentality.

Why not fly to KL (you've already paid for it) fly or bus to Penang and do your visa there?

People who come in on visa exempt and know they want a longer stay than a 30 day extension locally can surely plan stage 2 ahead?

I agree with you and if a booking is needed to satisfy Etihad or any other airline just book a refundable one and cancel.  A throw away ticket wouldn't have been needed at all,  if the OP would have just rerouted from BK to Vientiane or Penang on arrival from France to pick up a tourist visa and then make his way to Samui.  Would have been less hassle than taking a 39 hour trip to Kota Bahru of all places.

Even though I said there were many places that were much cheaper than Thailand, in SEA, the fact is that the ones which are (e.g. Cambodia & Philippines) require you to compromise on things like infrastructure.

A serious contender would be Malaysia (MM2H is a great retirement program that includes being able to buy & own a house) & Vietnam seems to be up & coming (one to keep an eye on I think).

And despite my protestations, I really do love Thailand so will most probably bite the bullet & move there when I leave Singapore next year.

Enjoy HK & do get out to see the giant Buddha (IIRC Lantra island) worth it for the cable car ride alone :)

I don't know where you get the idea that Cambodia is cheaper than Thailand.  It is tricky to compare Cambodia to Thailand, because the comfortable living price range is much greater in the Thai cities of BK and CM than PP (CR has a narrower range but is flat out cheaper at similar quality).  Some things like bread, cigarettes, alcohol and some international dining options are cheaper in PP, but comparing like for like,  housing is more expensive in PP and if you decide to purchase a condo, or even rent, you will be in for a surprise when you need to buy furnishings and housewares.  Add the poor infrastructure, petty crime, poverty and general third world feel and IMO anyway, PP is no bargain for permanent living.  Siem Reap seems to be a much better option for quality of life, but since I haven't actually lived there I cannot comment.

If we understood why, we could possibly find a way around it.

Rott put it best when he said, "Why? is not a question to ask here ... we are just foreigners and there is never any expectation for us to understand 'why it is'."  Most Thai employees and government officials are also not expected to understand 'the why' of a company or gov't policy.  As for your theory, try not using western logic or rationale to decipher policy in Thailand; the stay will be much more enjoyable.

  14. The website you linked is showing a photo that is not Muang Chiang Rai immigration and the map below and address you posted is the location of CR Immigration in Mae Sai.  If you are looking for Immigration in Muang Chiang Rai it is located on the bypass highway that links to CEI airport and is fairly easy to find.  When you do go to extend your visa exempt entry, make sure that you have a local address in case they ask where you are staying.

Paid 650 a night on booking .com with breakfast 2 nights 1300. Quoted over phone 780 per night with breakfast.

If you say so, but please tell me why the cancellation fee on your booking is $31?  This equates to 1082 baht, a very common price that comes up when using booking.com, at genius level, to reserve a standard room with breakfast.
