  1. I just returned from a trip to the doctor for knee pain and he gave me a rather convincing presentation on the benefits of taking gluclosomine and chondroitin (don't hold me to that spelling :o ). He cited two ongoing studies, one in the US and one in Canada that have shown positive effects. This isn't an overnight pain relief, but it's a long term plan for better joint health.

I'm not a doctor and have never even played on on TV--take it for what it's worth!

  2. One commentator mentioned Pattaya around 20 odd years ago. Yes, 30 years ago it was a wonderful place apart from the odd USN ship hitting the beach now and then. Now look at it!. Commercial, overblown, noisy but then, it suits a lot of people. I wonder just how many expats who have retired to that area now regret it.

My wife and I vacationed in Pattaya 30 years ago and loved it. When we went back in 89, my brother-in-law set up a trip to Pattaya. I hated it! The room was terrible, the location sucked. The beach looked nothing like I remembered from my last trip. I complained to my wife who was initally miffed at me, but the next day we packed in the car and found a really nice resort on the beach at Cha Am. We practically had the place to ourselves. Loved it!

  3. First arrived in January 73. I flew into Udorn RTAFB on a C-141 and then was transported by bus a few clicks down the road the 7th RRFS (officially meaning Radio Research Field Station but more commonly referred to as the Rock & Roll Freak Show). The day I arrived happened to coincide with general elections after the latest coup so everyone was restricted to base. Our little installation was the home of a FLR-9, a huge direction finding antenna commonly nicknamed the Elephant Cage. So what do I see when I first pulled onto Ramasun Station, an elephant near the antenna! Turns out they brought one on base to give rides. Somehow I suspect that was small consolation to those who'd rather be partying just off base or downtown Udorn.

I've since been back for visits in 89 and 2001. Hope to make it back for a visit in 2-3 years with eventual retirement in the PakChong area.

  4. I do see a generic difference between your military pension, your wife's civil service pension and the social security benefit.

The military and civil service were earned by services rendered, ie. employment while social security is a contributory plan not involving employment.  There is language in the treaty about pension income or annuities "earned" through employment.  I would guess that area is more vulnerable to attack by the tax collectior if they every get around to it.

Thanks...appreciate the response. I'm confiident will be in pretty good shape--as long as the $ doesn't tank totally! :o

  5. dclaryjr,

Reading the US<>Thai treaty, especially article 20 and the provisions of paragraph 2 of Article 21 I would say:

People from the US receiving annuities from the US will have to pay taxes in the US.

Well I certainly like your interpretation!! :D

Only in case a US-person changes his nationality into Thai, he/she can switch to Thai taxation.

Uh..oh. How about dual Nationality types. My wife will have two passports and two pensions (Civil Service and Soc Security). :o

  6. Not satisfied with where I left lthe ast post, I researched the issue and went to the actual language of Article 20 of the Treatey between the U.S. and Thailand on "Double Taxation".  Paragraph 2 of that article is specifically directed at social security benefits paid and taxed by the U.S. and it specifcally excempts taxation of those benefits by Thailand.

What is your take on U.S. Military pensions (retirement pay)? I've read that document several times and I'm still not sure if it's taxable or not.

  7. Biggest problem in my opinion is that they are so fragile.

You have to have 2 people to wall-mount a plasma. Becuase if they bend - even a little bit, you have a problem.

I wouldn't take the chance of freighting it at my own risk - + you won't be able to hand-carry if you fly.

For the moment I think the best bang for the buck (or baht) is DLP projection. But this is a field where technology is on the fast track and the quality per $/baht is going to keep getting better.

  8. I was going to start a new thread but I'll just piggy back here.  I was wondering how popular/available racquetball is in LOS.  I don't know if my body will be able to take it by the time I retire, but I play five days a week now.

It's not very popular here at all. Actually its played very little outside of the USA. Your best bet is to find another american here who has a racket or siwtch to squash.

Thanks. We have one squash court where I play (on a military base) but it's being used for storage!

BTW, I think racquetball is fairly common in Canada as well so I guess we can label it a North American phenomenom.

  9. what on earth is a call hole ?

I dont get your point about people waiting on tees. sorry but where else should people be whilst waiting for a par 3 to clear?  to ensure you are not hit as theirs.

I believe he is referring to the practice of letting a second group hit their tee shots on par 3's before the preceding group putts (or hits their second shots). On my trip we played on course that was rather crowded and we had to do that on a couple of holes .

One other thing I found very interesting about golf in Thailand was the one-meter gimme. On the first course I played (Lamphun/Chaing Mai), they actually had a circle around the cup about one meter in diameter. It took me a few holes to figure it out but eventually it was clear. If a putt stopped in that circle you were done--your caddy picked up the ball. On a couple other courses the circle wasn't physically present, but it was there nonetheless.

Here's a complete report on my golf trip:

  10. If I understand what you mean, I use gmail to both receive and send mail using POP (I use Incredimail as opposed to Outlook/Outlook Express or others, but don't think that would make any difference). :o

What I mean is: My main email account is through my Road Runnner account. With Yahoo mail I can download mail that is in my Road Runner mailbox. The way I read it, I can't do that with gmail. If you're saying I can than that is good news and I'll check it out.

  11. Sometimes I can click on "view new posts" and get five pages worth, and if I come back a half hour later, I'll just get one page.  But there are times when I come back and it appears I end up viewing the same five pages I viewed 30 minutes earlier.  How does this work?

Sounds like the cookie from your last session wasn't properly stored. Are you on a standalone system, or logging in from a network?

I'm at home going through a broadband router and a cable modem. I block third party cookies but that shouldn't affect it--correct??

  13. Of course, if you want a real email address....

I've got a load of Gmail invites, PM me if you want one (dont forget to include which email address you want the invitation sent to)

Yep, a gig of storage and a much better interface IMO.

I got almost 50 invites as well. I wonder how much longer before they drop the "beta" designation and just let anyone sign up.

  14. Does it really matter. :o

Not really. I get what I need out of this forum. Like I said--I just found the wording of the message to be off base. If it had said "for our most active posters" or something like that, then there would have been no comment from me.

BTW, I have over 2500 posts in rec.sport.golf. Could I cash some in here! :D:D

  15. QUOTE(Darknight @ 2005-02-20 23:49:54)

New Access Rules For BEDLAM and Other to be created (VIP) forums

As of today we adjusted the access policy for the old vip forum now called BEDLAM.

All users with a number of posts higher then 500 will be automatically moved to "advanced members" usergroup , from which they can access the Bedlam forums and others who might be created later.

In this way we hope to provide a Place for the long standing members of the community were they can talk amongst themselves. The members that were granted access before keep their rights

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just find this wording curious because I've been a member longer than the guy who wrote it. Someone could join, post a bunch of cra p, and hit 500 in no time. :o
