  1. LOL> as if they will ban their bread and butter to please a few expats who like to drive around Beach Road unimpeded by buses.

Riding a motorcycle behind a bus is the safest way to travel as no one will get in your way LOL. As a motorcyclist, I really don't find them to be much of a problem.

If they had to choose between banning motorcycles and buses, it would be the motorcycles that go... as is the case in most Chinese cities.

Safe re: accidents maybe but unsafe re: pollution! Tourist buses should be annually certified for maintenance and pollution standards and if it doesn’t pass its off the road!

  2. U.S. gun lobby slams anti-gun 'elites' after Florida school massacre
By Roberta Rampton and Makini Brice

Protestors rally outside the Capitol urging Florida lawmakers to reform gun laws, in the wake of last week's mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, in Tallahassee, Florida, U.S., February 21, 2018. REUTERS/Colin Hackley

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The head of the National Rifle Association lashed out at gun control advocates on Thursday, saying Democratic elites are politicizing the latest mass school shooting in the United States to try to erode constitutionally guaranteed gun rights.

NRA chief executive Wayne LaPierre echoed President Donald Trump's call to arm teachers to prevent school shootings, and weighed in on a long-running political and cultural divide over access to weapons that has been inflamed by last week's massacre at a Florida high school that killed 17 students and staff.

"The elites don't care not one whit about America's school system and school children," LaPierre told a friendly audience of conservatives outside Washington. "Their goal is to eliminate the Second Amendment and our firearms freedoms so they can eradicate all individual freedoms."

The U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms.

At the White House, Trump told local and state school officials he had discussed his ideas to stem gun violence in schools with the NRA, the politically influential gun lobby that backed him in the 2016 campaign. He called the group "Great American Patriots."

"There's a tremendous feeling that we want to get something done," he said. "The NRA wants to do the right thing."

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer condemned LaPierre's comments and said the NRA was "once again spewing pathetic, out of touch ideas, blaming everything but guns."

The Feb. 14 rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida was the latest in a series of deadly shootings at U.S. schools and has spurred unprecedented youth-led protests in cities across the country. Many of the teenagers and their parents taking part have called for more curbs on guns.

LaPierre, speaking at the annual gathering of the Conservative Political Action Conference, portrayed the NRA as the true protector of the country's schoolchildren and offered free training to those who want to bear arms to protect schools.

"We must immediately harden our schools," he said. "Every day, young children are being dropped off at schools that are virtually wide open, soft targets for anyone bent on mass murder." It should not be easier to shoot up a school than a bank or a jewelry store, he added.

The NRA set up a booth at the conference to sign up new members and recruit campaign field workers for the November mid-term elections in which Democrats are trying to take over control of Congress from Trump's fellow Republicans.

    ARMED TEACHERS

"I'm strongly for concealed carry, strongly for arming the teachers like Trump said," said Nick Fuentes, 19, from Chicago, as he stood outside the booth. "Teachers who are adept at firearms should be armed."

LaPierre attacked Democrats by name including Senators Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren and Christopher Murphy and also took a swipe at the FBI for failing to follow up on a tip about the alleged shooter in the Parkland massacre. The FBI has said it failed to act on the tip.

Florida Governor Rick Scott also criticized the FBI for failing so far to provide details about why it did not respond to the tip. "Family members and loved ones of the victims deserve answers today," Scott said in a statement.

Trump reiterated his idea, first raised on Wednesday during an emotional discussion with people affected by the shooting, to arm teachers, a notion raised by some politicians in the past but dismissed by critics as fraught with danger.

"Anyone who pushes arming teachers doesn't understand teachers and doesn't understand our schools. Adding more guns to schools may create an illusion of safety, but in reality it would make our classrooms less safe," said Randi Weingarten, the president of the American Federation of Teachers union.

At an hourlong meeting on school safety with 10 state and local officials, Trump said armed teachers with an aptitude for guns would deter would-be shooters.

"A gun-free zone to a killer, or somebody that wants to be a killer, that's like going in for the ice cream," Trump said. "They're not going to walk into a school if 20 percent of the teachers have guns."

Trump repeated his support for tightening background checks for gun buyers, with an emphasis on mental health, and lifting the age limit to buy some kinds of guns. He also said he would push for an end to the sale of bump stocks, which allow rifles to shoot hundreds of rounds a minute.

The White House said Trump does not want to ban sales of an entire class of firearms despite mounting pressure to put assault weapons such as the one used in the Florida shooting out of civilian reach.

While gun laws vary widely by state, most federal gun control measures would require Congress to act.

A 19-year-old former student at Stoneman Douglas, Nikolas Cruz, has been charged with carrying out the Parkland shooting. Authorities say he was armed with a semiautomatic AR-15 assault-style rifle that he had purchased legally last year.

  3. Of course "this distinction between the lady in the article and thai females from a middle class and/or  educated background is important"
It all comes down to available options - some have an easier road to travel than others regarding lifestyle choices

My Thai wife has a BS degree from a Thai Univ but was unable to obtain a white collar job as most of the jobs in the DC area are either Govt, military or a contractor to either. All of our pre-travel discussions went on deaf ears due to culture & weather shock. Maybe middle America would be different.

  4. Marriage to foreigners not all it's cracked up to be complains Isaan woman stuck in Farangland!

An Isaan country girl has gone on Facebook to moan about life with a foreign man abroad.   It is just not the bed of roses that she imagined.   Everything is not laid on for her all day so she can sleep and eat.   She explains in North Eastern dialect as a warning to others:   She has to take responsibility for herself.   She has to look after her own child.   Things are not done for her - there appear to be no maids in Meuang farang ("Farangland")   There are no regular handouts of cash and gifts.   "What's more - things are expensive - and I mean expensive," she says. "What you can find in the markets of Isaan to eat for five or ten baht costs 100 baht.    "There are none of the things that we can find for free growing in the wild.   "A dinner at a restaurant that might cost 100 or 200 in Thailand is 1,000 baht a head. It sets you back 6,000 for the family to eat", said the unnamed woman who was wearing a T-shirt indicating she might be in Germany.   She continued: "It's not "sabai, sabai" like Thailand. In Thailand everyone calls each other auntie or uncle, brother and sister - not here".   Pictures of the woman looking pregnant on a beach probably in Thailand went with the Phenkhao aricle.   Phenkhao chipped in that marrying a farang (white Caucasian) was the dream of many Thai women. They thought it meant an easy and comfortable life that would help to raise the standard of living of those left back home in Thailand.   But, they added, the fact is many Thai women find out it is just a dream. Reality is different.   Source: Phenkhao     tvn_logo.jpg&key=c0462a795211d2ee26e4aec14494dc36e676f591189aadad96b38e269ae09239 -- [emoji767] Copyright Thai Visa News 2018-02-03

For the 1st 7-Years of our marriage we relocated to the USA (Washington, DC) where my wife worked. The money she earned she used it for miscellaneous expenses for herself and I paid for all other expenses with my salary. In addition to the change of seasons (to include winter) she worked 12+hours a day x 6 day’s a week. We did this for 7-years which taught her the American life style, lots of jobs if your willing to work. All paid off for us as my job allowed me to retire at 56-years old and now we’ve relocated to a Thailand where my US retirement goes a long way (were able to purchase a nice house and live very comfortably).

  5. Although the issue of health care is a pressing issue in the US than some countries, which of the following best describes your opinion about government involvement in health care.

Please feel free to leave a comment and express your opinion based on your experiences in your home country and abroad.

As the Middle Class, I’m tired paying for those who don’t have health care. I’ve struggled paying for my college, working 35+ years, purchase a house, car, send kids to college,...

As my father schooled be as a young child, you bypass the things you can’t afford. Life is not fair but that’s life.

The Affordable Health Care Act was a fallacy as it was not really affordable and to mandate young/healthy people to enroll to help defray costs was ridiculous! Thank god Obama care is rescinded.

Summary: Health Care isn’t cheap and the Middle Class should not have to fund it!

  6. One of the biggest coach parks is actually between Beach Rd and 2nd Rd, near the Twin Palms hotel.
The problem seems difficult to solve; it just gets moved from one location to another: Beach Rd to Bali Hai, then back again.

Yes it’s a big parking area but I see a lot of buses either idling out front (sitting or letting passengers off) or queuing waiting to enter.

  7. Retired Aussie policeman shot himself because he "didn't want to be a burden"

    1pm.jpg.4c5c9b6f7deb5e1ba5e600b2c542de70.jpg
    Picture: Daily News

Bang Khun Thian police were called to a condominium in Ekachai Soi 88 in Bangkok on Saturday after reports that a foreigner had shot himself.

In the sixth floor room on a bed they found 82 year old Thomas Edward Bacon (name transliterated from Thai) with a single gunshot wound to the throat from a .38 gun.

On a table was a suicide note. It read: "I don't want to be a burden for anyone to look after".

The victim's wife Thanakorn Lomrat, 54, who owns the condominium, said that her husband was a former policeman. He came to Thailand twenty years ago but his health had deteriorated and he had many illnesses.

Recently he had suffered diabetes that had affected his eyesight and was barely able to walk.

The body was sent for autopsy and the embassy have been informed.

Better he only shots himself vs taking out others (i.e. family, friends, unknowns).

  8. The tourist buses take people to their hotels as they do anywhere in the world. The buses to the bus station do not.
However, they should be banned on Beach Rd.

The tour buses here are like no bus operators in the world. Lined-up/parked where they want, double parked, unloading passengers into oncoming traffic, and buses bellowing black smoke while idling for hours. Adding to the frustration the bus passengers are mostly Chinese/Korean and are clueless on transiting the road in traffic.

  9. Having lived here for 12 years I never heard a Thai citizen complain about the baht buses.

Why is it foreign guests here complain about everything and cause hate and discontent on line?

And we wonder why the citizens are beginning to dislike us more and more?

Enjoy the country or leave so the rest of us aren't looked down upon and criticized.

You’re a guest so stop complaining.  It's rude.

This post isn't about Baht buses, it's about the tour buses :)

  10. Of course and then they could also take a tip from a Japanese Airline and let a disabled tourist crawl the 500 mtrs to their hotel  .  You on drugs or something else hallucinogenic ?

Easy to cite negative aspects but short on an alternate solution or options. If a sweeping change is done and options for handicap, then it's a win-win for us retirees who live here year long.

Note: these issues need to be raised and addressed now as Pattaya is changing with casinos in the near future.

  11. You can try the complaints website, direct to the Mayor of Pattaya. I doubt if it does much good, but it is there for you to use. Perhaps if they get enough complaints about coaches running their engines all day, adding to warming and pollution, they might take some notice. I made a similar complaint a few weeks ago.

I also used the Website two weeks ago to complain and no response (only birds chirping) from the Pattaya Govt.

  12. The financial requirement and Thai health insurance are "no starters".

What is the real benefit to the Retiree from this proposals!

Do they think falang is stupid and they let their money sit in a Thai bank with no interest paid.

Also, for the Thai health insurance issue, there should be an exception for those who apply who can prove they currently have health care insurance.

  13. My Thai wife of 7-years and I when to three Pattaya banks today to request a bank loan to purchase a townhouse. My wife is also a USA citizen, as am I and she speaks fluent English, as well as Thai.

Pissed me off as none of the banks officers spoke English and spoke to my wife who isn't the family financier. For the first bank I continually asked interpretation questions and the last two I just sat there.

    What a joke!

  14.
    Pretty silly poll...innit.

Why would you conduct an investigation if you already have evidence?

Cops don't search your car because they have evidence, they search your car because they have probable cause to look for evidence.

As the article says 75% of Americans agree that there is enough probable cause to warrant a search into Trumps activities.  Sounds like a vote of no confidence to me.

And you believe the article? Really?

  15. And what exactly do you mean by "successes"? LOL So far, not hard to find failures.

Obama accomplished a lot, but was stopped from doing more by the Republican led Congress. Politics at it's worst.

Obama was hardly arrogant. Especially when compared to Trump!

Obama successes - VA debacle, IRS embarrassment, HUD sham, Un-affordable Health Care, EPA Flint, MI cover-up,.. HAHA great job - need more!

  16. I think he will CHOOSE to resign.

I assume he will issue pardons for everyone, including family/in-laws, BEFORE resigning.

Immediately upon swearing in, Pence will pardon Trump.

Eventually Pence will have to resign, I'm thinking Paul Ryan will already have resigned.

I'm not sure what happens if there is no Speaker?

So Hail to the Chief, our first Mormon President.

Open the door/windows as your getting light-headed from a lack of oxygen!
