  1. My newborn baby (8.9.18) is Thai, born in Bangkok, my wife is Thai. I am British and live in the UK. My baby will live in Bangkok for the first year at least.

I have already checked out the UK side and I am not entitled to any benefit, including child support.

Would my wife be able to receive any benefit for my baby?

I now know (through the excellent Sheryl of this forum) that both my baby and wife get free medical support in Thailand.

  2. I have just got the birth certificate back for my daughter, born on 8/9/18.

I was born in November 1977, making me 40, but on the certificate it states that I am 41.

My wife was born in July 1978 but on the certificate it states that she is 40.

Do you know why this would be the case?

  3. My brother-in-law has made my wife see sense and he certainly understands all the information you have given me regarding free health care. This has reassured me no end.

You say are registered with at least ten hospitals - presumably you are only entitled to free payment at one though - what would be the benefits of my baby being registered at any others than the local one?

Also, if we are on holiday in Thailand and the baby is ill (not an emergency) does that mean we have to pay for treatment at a local hospital if we cannot get back to our registered hospital?

I keep saying it, but thanks again Cheryl, you have been an enormous help.

  4. Sheryl, once again, you have been a great help. You have really filled in my gaps of knowledge and left me more assured about my baby's health.

Is there anywhere I can read about all this (in English) so I don't have to keep bothering you?

Would my daughter be automatically enrolled?

I like your line about the Royal Family and will use that on my wife.

  5. Thanks Sheryl. That is a great help.

The cost was a great shock to me but after further discussion it is some kind of 'stocks and shares investment thing' with AIA that also included health insurance. Details are vague but I do believe her - and I won't be choosing it!

I have done my own checking and there isn't much health insurance available for just a baby. My wife already has a policy and I don't need one either.

You are right they do cost roughly between 30,000 baht a year (inpatients only) to 67000 baht a year (in and outpatients). If I choose inpatients only then I doubt (fingers crossed) if I will spend 37000 baht a year as an outpatient for it to be worthwhile - so it looks like inpatient only at this stage.

The cost of £2000 for the birth was 58000 baht for a c-section at Ramkhamhaeng Hospital plus a few minor complications at birth we had to pay for and pre-op check ups. They were very good, but they should be at that price!

I agree with you that it all seems unnecessary to get insurance at all as if it is an emergency then the baby will be treated very well in a public hospital. It is just trying to convince my wife. She is middle class and so are all her friends and family. I speak to them and they never use public hospitals either. Why do you think that is? Perhaps it is to do with status.

Do you have any information on healthcare clinics? I can then try and convince my wife.

  6. Thanks very much Sheryl, you have been a great help. You have opened my eyes!

My wife has spent the day trying to convince me to pay 10,000 baht a month private health care for my daughter! I don't mind paying for a bit of private cover, but I was thinking closer to 10,000 baht a year rather than a month.

I have already spent £2000 on the birth.

  7. Is the universal health scheme available for all Thais - or just those that are working?

My wife is Thai but doesn't currently work and my daughter (born in Thailand) is only a few weeks old. I don't need the health coverage as I live and work in UK.

I am guessing she should be - by the 'gold card' or '30 baht' scheme. She lives in the Ramkhamhaeng area.

  8. I am British my wife is Thai and we have a newborn baby, just a couple of weeks old, born in Bangkok.

For various different reasons I plan to stay in the UK for the baby's first year and my wife will stay in Bangkok with her family and the new baby.

Does anyone have health insurance for their newborn that they can recommend?

We just got a quote from AIA which was approximately 10,000 baht a month! This is an investment type insurance that pays you back if you don't use it. I would just prefer an annual fee type - as we are not sure what country the baby will live in as yet!

I am aware that Thai people can still use state hospitals. My wife isn't too keen on that though.

I am not aware of my wife or her family of being on an existing family insurance scheme.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

  9. After 8 years my ipod's speaker is no longer functioning. The sound is only coming through one headphone.

Does anyone know the best place for repairs in Bangkok? Authorised or otherwise.

  10. I traipsed round Central World last weekend and saw no size 12 shoes whatsoever. I did manage to find some flip flops though.

Is it possible to order shoes on the internet in Thailand? Amazon wouldn't let me and neither would Marks & Spencer.

Any idea how much the cost of sending shoes from the UK would be?

I am interested to know how other people have got on with the same predicament.

  11. My Thai girlfriend is in the process of registering her business (selling sugar).

She informs me that when the business is set up she will be able to employ me and give me a work permit. Is it really that simple?

I am a UK citizen currently in Bangkok with a tourist visa.
