  1. Yeah 2100mhz is great when there is a cell tower every square km

back in Australia and NZ they use 850/900 for nation wide 3G and then use the 2100 band for high density, high capacity, short range, it works well, here you seem to be stuck on 2100 with AIS, DTAC and True, 850/900 should be the primary bands

  2. Win XP onwards was/is pretty stable, things have come along way since the 90s

The guy with the Toshiba laptop, unless Toshiba engineered their own components and didnt use Intel/AMD and nvidia or ATI ect ect then i assure you there are Windows 7 drivers for it, mate of mine bought a brand new laptop with 8 installed last year, wanted 7, I annihilated every single bloody partition on the hard drive and put 7 on it, looked up the model number to get a list of what display adapter, network adapter ect it uses, DLed and loaded the drivers with a usb stick, its running great

  3. People are overly paranoid about security updates, just install adblock plus, dont click on fancy big "download this!" buttons and youll be right

Anyway since 98SE its been every 2nd OS for me

    98SE

    skipped ME (shit)

    XP

    skipped Vista (shit)

    7

skipping 8 (initially shit, 8.1 is ok ive heard but no real reason to stop using 7)

  4. ^thats a decent setup, other people using it would be fine as long as the local cellular tower had enough capacity to service them, but your right, keep it for yourself

Wired internet is for me though, don't have to to deal with local congestion and lag spikes when I do online gaming

  5. Change to average bitrate and tick turbo 1st pass, the encoder will throttle the bitrate in slow scenes so it has reserve for high movement scenes, so better quality less file size

Your cut is almost 3 hours long so your going to really have to ration the bitrate to get 700mb, try 600kbps and see how it looks, don't worry, 264 is alot more effecient then older codecs

Also change audio to 64kbps, if it's a home vid you won't notice the difference

  6. Handbrake is good, all in 1 program

Read up on some guides, use the x264 video codec, some guys are getting good quality rips with 720p material with a file size of 800mb, DVDs are 480p so you should be fine aiming for 700mb.

You can reduce the audio footprint by only using your preferred language track and downmixing to 2 channels, use AAC codec at 128kbps, much better quality then mp3 at low bitrates, if you want to retain surround sound use Ac3 at 384kbps

  7. Thanks guys, went to the shopfront in pantip plaza near night bazaar and signed up, paid them for 6 months, contract is 12 Months with a 6xxx cancellation fee, seeing as 6 months only costs about 37xx I'll just pay the next 6 months and give the service to a good friend here if they need it then I'll be back here in June 2015 and continue the contract at the next house I rent

Nice staff who speak decent english, no installation fee or any bullshit, I recommend them

  8. Seems pricey

Keep us updated, I'll be looking for a gym too, I'm an ex powerlifter so I don't care for fancy new gyms full of machines, just need barbells, dumbbells, maybe a lifting platform for deadlifts, some eye candy and a sensible price

  9. Just rented a house in Chiang mai for 6 months, is it possible to get a 6 month fixed line internet deal?

I don't mind if I have to pay the whole 6 months in advance, I'm not after fast download, 5mbit would be fine so I guess I could get on a cheap plan and just pay the whole 12 Months if thats the only way.

Wireless/mobile internet is not an option as I'm after a low latency reliable connection

    Thanks in advance

  10. We NOT all do slicky things, maybe in your family/world, but good honest hard working people really excist.

I for one never did anything I should have been caught for. I am sure MANY readers here are the same as me.

So, I hope your past follows you, if needed. If not, welcome same, really don't care either way.

Please just refuse the first beer ever, if I am so unfortunate to meet you somewhere.

I don't think he'll be able to reach for the beer anyway since your moral high horse is so high

  11. So I got the manu sim expecting 4g but ended up stuck with 3g, sort of didn't care as the network seemed very fast, infact internet is still quite usable despite being currently capped. I'll go to the true shop this week and sort it out

Quite surprised Thailand hasn't run out of spectrum in Band 1 seeing as all providers have networks on it, lots of different frequency carriers needed as there seems to be a tower every block and they are also rolling out 4g on it

  12. Kind of annoying for people like me who have the funds to do 12 month trips here but no desire to marry, study or work, just work on fitness, health and drink sugarcane and coconut juice

@BudRight, I see where you're going with this, but let me turn it around a few degrees - if I have the option to stay in Thailand legally surely it's worth jumping through a few hoops to do so ? One recurring piece of advice on this forum is to tell no-one (not even family members) if there is any aspect of your life in Thailand that wouldnt bear official scrutiny or would leave you open to any form of blackmail. I met an English teacher in BKK a few years back who freely admitted that he had nothing more than the entry stamp in his passport from his last flight two years earlier - that just isnt a situation I would be happy with. I care about the rules to the extent that they can come back to bite me on the posterior - nothing more - although I agree that some here seem intent on a career in Thai Immigration.

To give you another frame of reference, its now officially 'tax time' in Australia and I have to lodge my final return. I couldnt give a flying fox about the Australian taxation system or how the money is spent, but I most definitely care about their powers of enforcement - this is one group of suits you just dont want to mess with and for me its the same with Thai Immigration. If I cant get the visa I want legally, then I'm left with a choice between Cambodia and Malaysia - I'm just not going to try to live my life in Thailand wondering if the next time I leave the country I wont be allowed back in. We can speculate about future crackdowns and postulate on Thai attitudes to foreigners, but it matters naught - their cricket pitch and they get to set the rules. Doesnt make it right, or fair, or honest any more than it makes it fair that the ATO will take one more pound of flesh from me - their rules, my money and they have the people to ensure they get what's coming to them.

( Any Aussie living in the belief that the ATO cant touch them needs to brush up on the Paul Hogan saga - he seems to have settled in the end but it took a long time, scores of lawyer$ and countless nights wondering if he'd be sent to jail at 70. No way to treat a living legend.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Hogan#Tax_problems )

The Ato besides from not actually being a legal entity https://www.google.com.my/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&ei=qhyyU5PRN9OgugS0u4LYBw&url=http://basic-fraud.com/wp-content/uploads/downloads/2010/10/The-ATO-is-not-a-legal-entity.pdf&cd=5&ved=0CCUQFjAE&usg=AFQjCNGaNSNgn21LJ8EmRD7L3JVoWC-Lww

...are actually pretty easy to ignore and fly under their radar unless of course your Paul Hogan who "owed" them millions and had a departure prohibition order slapped on him so he had to settle with them

  13. Why don't you bypass all of this crud and get yourself a USB aircard. Just put a SIM card in the stick and you are good to go. All the phone services offer deals and plans with them or you can just go prepaid for the internet SIM time and it is cheap. You will be free.

Expensive if you download lots, higher latency, subject to air interface and backhaul congestion

But if all you do is do a few posts on forums, email and update your block everyday it's fine I suppose

  14. I am no expert on this, but I've aways gotten the idea that if you are using MP3 files and such, the music is never going to sound very good. Hi-end headphones might be a waste of money.

    http://www.popsci.com/science/article/2013-02/why-audio-compression-sounds-so-bad

As long as the mp3s are 256 or 320kbps it doesn't really matter, infant a 192kbps mp3 on a hifi portable player may sound better then a lossless file on a ipod

  15. I'm similar age and just got here, looked at a nice house for 5000 a month and apartments for 2500 and 2200 per month yesterday, not far from festival plaza, none were listed in English though which is I think the key, found out about them by talking to my hotel lady who lives in the area, she showed me them and did the talking

Best to come here and stay in a hotel and scout out the place for a few weeks imo

    Best of luck
