  1. I think the government is doing a good job. It will take years, and a few significant events to really change the deep seated problems here. This government knows it, and the population knows it. ..And they don't need to read much, as word of mouth, local radio, and a few much watched tv channels give them all the info they need.

I always appreciate the incredible accuracy of Thai government members' forecasts - a 24% increase in tourists planning holidays indeed!

It could be much more than 24% when the Thais start releasing the Ebola "cure" that they discovered a few days ago at Mahidol as reported extensively in the Thai press.

Don't hold your breath (on the 'Ebola' cure)

The realm has never discovered, invented, perfected, developed anything that has benifited the human race.

Oh well I suppose, let them dream on.....zzzzzzzz

I don't know about that mate! Thai jasmine rice is one of the top selling rices in the world. Thai rubber too...Oh and He who shall not be named also came up with a method of cloud seeding!...

and there is also the arse blaster !

  3. Old fashioned solution is arsenic which may be available or sulphur - some of your older locals will have seen both used on cattle or goats.

That is a new one for me ,sulphur and arsenic sheep dip ,a look at Google ,found it was used 100 years ago in Oz,also a piece from the uk ,do not let the

misses make a cake this week. Not a good idea for dogs.

l.It was used a lot more recently than that, I'm not that old, and arsenic dips are still available even now.
  4. Ok I've putthis ine here rather than the health forum as i think its more of a social problem. My ever so caring wife (usually) has started to complain about my habit of finishing a 'ching chong' in the loo by letting the last couple of drops land on the floor in front of the pedestal. She has taken action by telling me to clean the toilet everyday. Of course she is right, but try as i may the last drip mostly ends up on the floor. Short of swallowing my manly pride and adopting the sitting position, I wonder what else I can do ?

  5. Bad idea to kill snakes, even though I for one are terrified of them. Better to find the killer first. Geese are a very good idea. You could also try moth balls around the enclosure, snakes don't like them. We do our house garden about once every 9 months, - it works. It could indeed be a hungry chicken. Small size chicken netting fence is also a good idea hav done that in Oz -landed 3 large brown snakes in one day - still alive. The snake catcher was very pleased. Good luck.

  6. Hi all,I'm Tim and live about 30klms from Nkswn towards Banpotphisai, which has just opened its third 7/11. I love the country lifestyle, but don't do the bar scene much. However, I wouldn't mind catching up with other farlang sometimes. Please call me if you are around,0878087028 or send a PM.

    Cheers, Tim

  7. I live near Nakhon Sawan. In the 12+ years on our plot I've only seen a snake a few times. As a farm boy from Oz I'm terrified of them, but at 65yrs now I've come to understand them more. We do have a few cobras I'm told, but they probably get caught and eaten. I would still keep well away if there was one around, but in general if you leave them alone they will do the same. So really no need for tongs excpt as a precaution ?

  8. This is quite a complex issue. Firstly, the type of rice, production costs and weather are the big factors in yield. Thai farmers will logically grow rice that is the cheapest to produce. They don't or cannot all grow hom mali orthe better quality fragrant rice, and its production costs are higher. Where they fall down is in the marketing, which is not controlled by the farmers. Producing higher value rice fro less paddy and encouraging more alternative land useage is essential.

  9. Two key questions - is the purpose of education to broaden the general knowledge of students and meet their own interests or to train them to do some kind of specific job, technical or otherwise? If its more about training then let the industries themselves design curricula and schools, so that the graduate is able to perform properly a specific sets of tasks and has a clearly identified skill set. The hotel and IT industries come to mind where they have their own colleges and training schemes producing professionals in a defined discipline. The bachelor degree maybe then becomes a gateway and introduction into this world.
