  2. im confused now :o

i live very close to patpong i dont even know how to explain to the taxi driver what is this road called....they never seem to know it!!!!!!

i have up on trying to give them the address so i just say surwong road and from there i give the directions

anyway as i said earlier i went to the foodland in patpong but it is very small and they dont have many things

i also went to Emporium.it is really good they have stuff that i have seen before :D:) and also in english,my next trip would be to villa

but Emporium and villa that u guys are talking about is far from where i live

is there a good market that is close to me???? as good as Emporium

i wouldnt mind the distance though if i have to( i miss home cooked food although the only thing i know is pasta) :D:):D

but i will try new stuff (whats the emergency number in bangkok in case something happens) looooooool

  3. Thailand in general and Pattaya in particular, tend to attract some of the worst kinds of tourist and expatriates of whatever nationality. I would certainly not like to be judged solely on the basis of the way some of my fellow countrymen behave in Thailand.

I spent many years in the Gulf and completely agree with smb that the Omanis, Bahrainis and Emiratis have a very different outlook and national character to say the Saudis and Kuwaitis.  Dubai, for example, currently attracts over five and a half million visitors a year (and rising), and they are generally the type of upmarket, high-spending tourists that Taksin and the TAT can only dream about. This would seem to repudiate the picture of some Taliban infested, medieval hellhole which so many posters on this board appear to have - usually without ever having set foot in the area.  If you want to meet some of the friendliest and hospitable people imaginable, try a visit to Syria.

The Middle East is a vast area comprising a wide variety of countries, cultures, religions, ethnicities and INDIVIDUALS.  Disparaging and condemning all “Arabs” for the actions of a visible minority, is therefore no more rational than reviling all “Westerners” or all “Asians”.

    very true

thank u very much.i totally agree on what u said (Thailand in general and Pattaya in particular, tend to attract some of the worst kinds of tourist and expatriates of whatever nationality)

actually i agree on every thing u said

  4. Will you all please use the quote button at the bottom of the reply as i am trying to read a very interesting subject, but by not using the quotes properly you are making it very difficult to make sense of what is being said :D

As far as my views on the subject, well  firstly let me say i am sure not all Arabs are the same but unfortunately the only ones i have met have been arrogant rude and very unpleasent.

I am sure it is the same with any race, i am British and i know all too well the reputation the football brigade give the rest of us peace loving non violent Brits that are just out to have a enjoyable time.

Just like i am sure not all Germans are bad dressers who steal all the sunbeds, or Americans who are loud mouthed and overweight etc etc :o

My wife and all of her friends i have spoken to, all have a severe dislike for Arabs, some of the stories i have heard from my wife who worked in a hotel and her friends who also worked in the same hotel have told me stories of verbal abuse, arrogance threating and lewd behaviour and general unpleasentness.

I tend to take people as i find them, i treat people the way i expect to be treated, if somebody is rude towards me then they will get the same back, if someone is nice then i will be nice beack etc.

It shouldnt be about race it should be about respecting your fellow human.

    i totally understand

the fact is u as a person if u were treated badly u will always remember the incident like where was the person from and all

for example: if your walking on the street and you need a lighter u will stop the first person asking for a lighter,if the guy gives out his lighter to u ,u will light your cigarette thank him and keep on walking u wont ask where is he from .but if he says NO I WONT GIVE YOU.that will stick in your brain and i bet u will tell your friend i met a very rude guy.

just think about it that way if both were arabs or from any other country u will totally forget about it if he handded you his lighter

im sure your wife or her friends have seen arabs with manners but those were normal so it didnt grab there attention

i hope what i just said makes scence

if it didnt bare with me i will put it in a diffrent way :D:):D

  5. Here Here. If you have not experienced it you would not beleive it. Arrogance beyond beleif. Anyway most of them, their religion forbids booze. :D As for pussy when not married :o:D

thank u so much and beleive me no one in his right state of mind would accept the things u have seen thats why it shocked u and it shockes me if i see it.

  6. I concur. I have lived in Saudi and Kuwait and let me tell you, it's not only the women that they treat like Sh*te. They treat everyone like Sh*te and the poor Bangladeshi's and Phillipeno's are at the bottom. That is my REAL experience, so much so, that i said stuff your tax free salary, I'm out of here :D

Here Here. If you have not experienced it you would not beleive it. Arrogance beyond beleif. Anyway most of them, their religion forbids booze. :D As for pussy when not married :o:D

poeple like u from both sides are the trouble makers .

i have read alot of posts in this topic that makes me sick and im happy that few are mature.

u guys judge the arabs that u see .and the ones that turns your attention most probebly is doing something abnormal ,there are so many other arabs the pass by u but u dont realise them (the bad always sticks out) .but u shouldnt judge all arabs on that

come to my country or go to bahrain or even dubai and see for yourself ,ask the brittish or the americans who live there.

does Soi Lang Suan mean 33?

  10. I hear you smb, Glad to meet you.

It’s ironic that these who ignorantly attack your people have left their own countries to  live in a place that they can neither truly appreciate nor ever understand.

Listen to what they discuss. Their idea of culture is cheap alcohol and cheap sex and it doesn‘t get much deeper than that. And they’ve no idea how badly they’ve screwed up the scene in places like Thailand.

There’s nothing you or I can do about the mean pompous losers who proudly display their ignorance on these public forums. They’re drawn to these pages like flies to chit. Makes ‘em feel important. Back home they’d probably be annoying someone in the local bar.

At this point in history, as an American, I am eager to meet, exchange ideas, and hopefully, to be friends with Arab people.

George Bush and the Sukhumwit lager-louts don’t speak for me.

And it’s not really the American Government. It’s the international corporations who stole that government, not to mention most of the world’s wealth, over the last 60 years or so.

very true it is international corprations

im really glad to find someone like u and im sure there are alot others who share your point of view but as they say (the bad always sticks out)

well u can consider me a friend and ill be happy to share ideas with u,and im ready to answer any question u ask or talk about any subject .

here in this fourm or any other place u like

    :o:):D

  11. hi all

im looking for a grocery store that has more foriegn stuff.i went to food land the one in patpong but it was small and they didnt have alot it small

i was told that Emporium has a grocery store and it is the best for expats

    is it true?!!

if not what do u recomend?

    thanks

  12. well i cant unberstand why some people try to judje all arabs as if we are all talk loudly, fat, hate americans and all other things that i read from some guys in this forum.!!!!!!!!!

we arabs are exactly like any other culture.we have the good and the bad,we have the strict and the open minded,we also have racsit people just like any other country.

now can i judje all americans on one or two or even 100?!!!!!!! NO

i hope the people who talked about us in that way should think a bit coz not all your culture are angles.

about the women wearing all black

u wouldnt understand it because u dont know about our culture or religin and u have to try to accept other cultures and religion

there are some people in latin america eat human flesh now that i cant understand and neither do u but i cant judje them untill at least i read about them .

we arabs or most dont hate u guys.we do blame your goverment for many things but we dont blame the american citzen.i know alot of americans who live in oman (where i come from) and dubai .ask them about us

    about the subject

yes i was told that it is owned by an arab but that dosent mean that there wont be any alcohol there .

most arabs come to thailand for medical reasons and thats why u see alot of them in that hospital. u will also see them in nana grace hotel and the hotels srounding it for that reason.

hope we all try to understand each other more and try to accept the other

  13. Hi SMB,

Since you are in the Gems Business ,Perhaps you would like to sponsor our Thaivisa.com Football team  :o

    Farangs

Accourding to My Thai Friends...the word farangs are meant for all foreigner in Thailand....excluding Cambodian,Lao,Viet....

:D im still on the first step .remind me after 10 years i might be able to. looool :D

    then am i considerd farang?cool

its good to see farangs like me then :D

  14. welcome smb.  i hope you enjoy your stay.

actually farang does not strictly mean white person, it means foreigner in a general sense.  while all white persons would generally be refered to as farang, some non-white persons (such as myself - i'm oriental asian) have also been refered to as farang by thai people (although probably less frequently).  it's not a very straight-forward notion and like thailand, can often seem contradictory.

I have to agree with thedude. I'm African American myself, and I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've been called "Farang" many Thai's, from friends to bargirls to Taxi drivers, of all classes and occupations , from different parts of the country. I even know of an African American Retired Expat that is referred to "Farang" by his own wife! I often asked my Thai friends why they call me that , and they more or less tell me that the word may have been originally ment "White/European", but the meaning and usage seems to be evolving more toward "Western / Foreigner", regardless of the color. Thai, like other languages, has words that are constantly evolving from their original meanings in response to present usages. " Farang" is more or less associated now with "White person" just because most Westerners in Thailand at present are of the "European" variety. But when the number and population of Non-White Westerners, Indian and Middle Easterners and mixed-race "Oriental" Asians increase in Thailand, especially in the next 50-100 years, the word "Farang" will most likely be used as an all-around name to decribe them.

    Anyway, enoug of that!

    Welcome SMB!

It's always good to get another veiwpoint ( especially Middle Eastern ) here!

    :D

That is right even in the Middle East there are some words evolved from its original meaning I think this is happening in all languages coz the world is becoming smaller.

thanks and im glad to be here with u all and ready to give u my viewpoint or middle eastern point of view in anything u wish to talk about .its true that in still young but I have lived in alot of different countries and that helped me to understand things more

    (i hope) >>>>:o:)

  15. Falang is white people. Thais has fun words for every group of people, they don't like to leave anybody out. :D

thanks for the info.....i dont even wanna know what they call me hehehehehehe :D

heheh they might call you "Khak" in case you wanna know :o

    Bambi :D

    That doesn't sound good. :D

thats the real colours of Thailand. Don't expect too much..... :D

hi amal do u know what amal means in arabic?

    it means hope :D:)

  16. haha, yes i did point that out to The Dude when he first joined TV but apparently he failed to act on it.:o  :D

and I thought I wasn't the sharpest knife in the drawer... You're THEDude in that case! :D

SMB, good luck on the jewellery trade in Bkk- if you're an honest one, you'll be a trendsetter and have a full shop. The other option is to employ annoying touts and tuk tuk drivers... let us know what you decide and you might get some business from the many members here :D

:D lol i think i will go with the first option :D

lets just hope that i dont get sckamed in the first place :D

  17. I'm curious about the arabic/north african to Thailand biz migration as well. If you visit  the 'little Arabia' soi behind suk soi 3, it's like a blend of these regions. SMB, you might do well to venture over there to meet others from your part o' the world, whom are already doing biz here. They might show you the "local" ropes.

Might be a bit tough tho, I hardly ever see anyone smiling over there?? Just a bunch of guys growling at each other or quietly smoking the pipes whilst women follow behind dutifully in full concealment... Having said that, the food's fabulous and highly recommended!

EDIT/ thedude and the_dude - DUDES, I just realised you're two different posters (I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer)  :D One or the other of you Dudes might want to change your handle to save confusion- altho your styles are certainly distinct  :o

very true i went there and they dont seem to smile alot, thinking about it they must have passed threw hard time to make them move and live over here....and most of them are orignally from iraq or the countries serounding it dont want to get into politics.......

will try the food thoguh i hope its good

  18. welcome smb.  i hope you enjoy your stay.

i am very curious about what specifically you do in the gem trade.  i have noticed many middle eastern and african people in bangkok the last few years and i hear they are mostly in gems or textiles, but i often wonder, why exactly is thailand attracting so many foreigners from these industries.

well thailand is like the mekkah of collerd stones for many reasons . naghboring countries like burma and cambodia bring there gems to bangkok.bangkok is well knowen for its gem bus. but in the other hand there are alot of sckamers and fake gems.

most come here for the good quality of making jewls and the cheap price.

im here because im planing to open my own jewl shop,so im going to look around for designers, gems and all

  19. Welcome!!!

I also found out that english communication depends a lot of your original language!

When I speak my german style english which sounds pretty hard, Thais have there problems understanding me, if my wife speaks english without the "t" and "r", they understand her very well......

If you come from middle east your english might be simillar to mine and difficult for the locals.....

gemologist, what is that? Dealing with Gems?

there are funny words for most nationalities, for black, for arabs, for jewish, for europeans and and and....

Everything a bit rassistic, but in a mild funny way, nut really insulting.

Have a nice time in Thailand!!!!!

    h90

hay all im 27 year old male from the middle east.im here in bangkok now ,and will stay for about 6 months.im a gemologist planning to do some business.im finding it really hard to comunicate with people here i dont know is it just me or you guys faced the same problem?!!!!! anyways im glad to find this site and hope u guys welcome me as a friend........ :D  :D

that could be true , now for about 2 hours im waiting for laundry to come over but still they speak tie and i speak english !!! i went to the buliding ofice and found a man who speakes a bit of english ,i told him what i want and he sounded like he understood that was 2 hours ago :o > i will try to get rid of the ® and talk to him again :D ....
