  1. In our case, daughter 3 yo, (then 2) came from our 3 month visit to Holland also on her Dutch passport and got 30 days. Within these 30 days we went to immigration, and got her a 1 year "permission to stay" (not a real visa I think) for 1,900 THB. Every 3 months we have to report to immigration and fill out a form, and actually next month we need to go and renew the 1 year "visa" and pay another 1,900 THB for the next year.

You are not (and IMHO don't HAVE to be) involved in this, papers authorised by the Norwegian government are not relevant either, nor is your visa. Your wife can go to immigration with your daughter, with the birth certificate, house papers, ID etc. and apply for this 1 year visa for your daughter.

This is all just based on my experience.

Edited: I see more knowledgable ppl have replied already :-) raises one question, is there a need for your daughter to get a Thai ID card? Mine doesn't have one (yet).

I want her to have a Thai PP to make entering LOS easier, but she still will be a dual citisen, as my wife and other daughter

  2. My daugther, 4 years of age, entered thailand in feb. this year on a 30 day visa. we have all the paperwork certified by Norwegian auth. and her mother is Thai, but the way I figured it my daughter is now on overstay. We've talked to the Thai immi. and they said we shouldn't worry, just bring the tabien ban and the documentation that she's born by a Thai. Is it this easy, or could we/she get into trouble by this?

should I do a visarun with her?

    Any suggestions apriciated.

    PS!

I'm on a 90 day non. imm. O extended to a year, and my wife entered on Thai passport.

Will this make any problems for me the next time I extend my visa?

    Morty

Not a problem. She has no penalty for overstay as she is under 17 years old. Get her Thai ID anyhow. It will be no problem for your visa as well.

tnx sunbelt, I'm in the prosess of Getting her her Thai ID now, since I like to play it by the book.

    tnx again

  3. Don't worry. Even if your child was not Thai the only thing that would happen is a stamp in her passport. There would not even be an overstay fine. As she is Thai you can take the documentation of that to immigration and obtain a one year extension of stay. There is no need for any visa run and remember that you can not leave without a re entry permit if you want to keep your extension of stay. This is not going to be an issue with your next extension - just do what they said and all should be fine.

tnx Lopburi, you just made my peace of mind, the reentry issue is not a prob. though since I got a multiple reentry permit.

    thanks again

  6. Beating up some girls what a man!

By the look and behaviour of him I think he is in desperate need of some counselling to enable him to step out of the closet.

Cut his balls of and send him back to the sheep loving country!

    Viking

GIRLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! are you stupid, can't read or just Norwegian?

Hey Lampy Don't diss the Norwegians (I'm one) :o Other that that I totally agree, don't pick a fight with men dressed up as girls at beach road, it's a no winner

  7. I came here for the first time 19 years ago on holliday, went down south to explore the islands, spesifically Koh Samui. Fell in love with the island (this was before they had an airport there, so ferry was the only option) Since my work enabled me to have many and long hollidays (four - five months a year) I just kept comming back. Many years later in 1997 I "toured" Isaan on my way up to chang mai to visit a friend, we had a "stopover" in Surin. I had to get a haircut, so off I vent, to find a hairdresser and there she was, the most beatiful lady I had ever seen. :o Thankfully I'd managed to learn enough thai to hold a sensible conversation in thai, so I asked her out, she agreed to go out with me on the condition that she could bring a friend. I thought why not, and since then we have stuck together. I married her in 99 and she went with me to my country (Norway). We desided to move to Thailand for good this year, so now we live in Pattaya with our two daughters. It has worked out perfect for us so far so we have no regrets. would have loved to live down on the islands, but since our kids go to school it's not an option for us.

And to all those Pattayabashers on the forum, Pattaya consists of much more than soi yodsak and walking street!! :D

  8. Go to Chiang Mai. If you fly with NokAir it will take an hour each way and a round-trip ticket will cost appprox 2000bt.

Chiang Mai is boring, Ping river and doi soitheep are the only places to visit there, unless you want to get ripped off at the night market. Unless you know someone there. go to the south (koh Samui, puhket ore someplace like that). Hua hin would be nice as well. If you're a hardcore thai explorer I would recommend Isan, and then you could wasted at lampshades place as well

  9. Canadian journalist shot dead by girlfriend in Chiang Mai

Get real folks, this is murder and should, and hopefully will be treated as such. No matter what the guy did wrong in his life, he didn't deserve to get shot 3 times, and not by an jealous ex-GF. Sorry bout the kids, but she deserves everything she gets Murder is murder, even if the shooter isn't named Somchai and lost his face.

  10. just how is one to find out if he is still in prison?

Agreeably a daunting task as there are approximately 300,000 prisoners in Thailand housed (warehoused?) in 159 prisons and correctional facilities. :o:D

Additionally, if the following is any indication of the other prisons, there's really no way to know if the guy is still there or not.... unless you happen to be his cousin??? :D:D

Klong Prem Central Prison Information Centre has the responsibility of keeping files on all prisoners and officers. Anyone requiring information must comply with the following.

    1. To access information about a prisoner. Persons requesting information must be a close relative of the prisoner. The person must have official identification proving that they are a relative of the prisoner. Officials requiring information must have an appropriate request, identifying clearly the person who will collect the information. The Information Centre will then process the request. Only non-classified information shall be given out. No sensitive information will be released. Information that will be released includes.

    - Whether the prisoner is incarcerated in the Klong Prem Prison

    - Behaviour classification and remaining sentence

    :D

I thought that anyone getting more then 30 years punishment in Thailand had to do their time in Bangkwang central prison. if that's the case he should be easy to locate. But then again I have no personal experience with thai prisons and hopefully it will stay that way :D

  11. World Cup causes Thailand US$60 million in European tourism revenue

BANGKOK: -- The number of European tourists visiting Thailand is projected to decline about 22 per cent during this year's World Cup football playoffs being held in Germany and the kingdom is expected to lose approximately Bt2 billion (US$60 million) in tourism revenue, according to a report issued Saturday by the KASIKORN Research Center (KRC).

The report said the number of foreign tourists visiting Thailand would decline during the World Cup, which began on June 9 and ends on July 9, as football fans would prefer to watch the tournament from television at their home countries, while many would even travel to Germany to see their favourite players in action.

Using Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) data, KRC analysts determined that as European tourists account for 22 per cent of total foreign tourists visiting Thailand, ranking second in number after tourists from East Asia, the economic loss during June-July from the reduced European arrivals would make a significant dent in local tourism revenues.

On average a European tourist spends nearly two weeks -- 13 days -- in Thailand and spends about Bt50,000 (US$1,300) during his or her stay in the kingdom.

Along with the current summer season in Europe now, it is projected that European tourists visiting Thailand during the World Cup would be about 140,000, down 40,000 from the same period of 2005, it said.

Because of the expected fall in the number of European tourists coming to Thailand during the one-month period, the country would lose about Bt2 billion in overall tourism revenue.

    --TNA 2006-06-17

I don't think this has anything to do with the WC, unless 100% of all europeans (22% of Thai tourists are european according to TAT) are football maniacs and would forfeit their hollliday just to be able to se the WC live. This has to do with Thailands declining reputation as a tourist destination. Let's face it, bars closing in the "evening", there are regular non-alchohol days applied to farrang non-budhists. ppl gets their handbags/gold necklaces snatched on a dayly basis. Travelers are adviced not to rent vehicles because of BIB corruption and insurance problems. Thailand is supposed to be a fun place, it ain't that fun anymore. For us living here, we learn to adapt to these situations, tourists don't. It doesn't matter if it's cheap, if you can't have your fun. Try going to the beach in patters or jomtien for a swim, and you be surpriced if your swimming outfit hasn't been wrapped in a plastic bag.

Then we have the so called "war on drugs" resulting in good paying customers beeing locked up in the bar/restaurant they drink/eat in having to do pee tests to be able to leave (if they're lucky). This of course would have nothing to do with the decline in tourists wanting to come here.

Two years ago it was the bird flu, last year it was the tsunami, and this year it's the WC, knowing the TAT they will find an excuse next year as well.

Thailand is a beautiful place, but maintenance/development is not up to par

  13. Fact: A lot of people are in Thailand on visa types where they have told Thai immigration they agree to NOT WORK in Thailand, yet they are indeed working, in these kinds of ways:

-- trading their brokerage accounts, sometimes acting as active full time traders

-- working as employees or contractors for foreign firms as offsite workers, where the pay is deposited into non-Thai bank accounts

-- running commercialized websites with non-Thailand servers, non-Thailand customers, and non-Thailand banking arrangements (employing no Thais), where the businesses are legally structured outside Thailand

-- working for non-Thai companies on a freelance basis doing online work such as writing and editing, being paid again into non-Thai bank acounts

So, does Thai immigration REALLY CARE about these kinds of activities?????

Is this kind of work really seen as "working in Thailand" by Thai immigration? Do they actively seek to investigate and arrest foreigners engaged in these non-Thailand economic activities that are hapening within the borders? If someone tipped off immigration about such activity, would they even open an investigation? Can anyone cite actual stories where people were arrested or had their visas cancelled doing such activities?

Now, I am not talking about people working directly in the Thai economy without proper visa and permit, or even people doing direct export sales via ebay (which after all does interact with the Thai economy). It seems to me this whole area is a kind of ethical/legal grey area, clearly the intent of the immigration law is to make sure foreigners don't take work from Thais, or if they open businesses that they employ Thais, but with the internet and globalization, these kinds of physically in Thailand but not of Thailand opportunities are more and more common and possible.

    So what is really happening?

I think it's perfectly legal to do your work while in LOS, as long as it isn't a LOS business

  17. Hello,

My wife and I are finally moving to Thailand. We have cut our belongings down to about 320 cubic feet. Smaller than a small container and slightly what one shipper called a vault. I found a mover from the yellow pages, but she seems VERY vague on how customs and the like will be dealt with. A while back on these forums someone suggested the use of a special customs agent

Any info, personal experience, and reccomemdations would be helpfull.

    Thanks

    KDF

I Moved to LOS in feb. this year, I used Evergreen or Greenship as thy're called in Norway. The main reason I used them, was their prices and their facilities in Lam Chabang, they have an Eveergreen office there. We sendt a 20" container with all my belongings TV's DVD players, 2 fridges, all the kids stuff, beds, basicly our whole house. I sendt the container in my wifes name, since she been living outside LOS for the past seven years. We used an agent to do the custum declarations/negotiations according to the BL (Bill of Lading)witch is the most important paper you will have/need Get it both in thai and english if possible. We had to pay 2400 bath tax (teamoney) cus we had two DVD players in our BL (one was a karaoke machine bought i LOS :o ) but that was about it. They didn't mention the two computers listed, with DVD'as well TiT. Costed us anther 18.000 bath to get the container delivered and unloaded at our home(we live in Pattaya klang, just of sukhumvit).

The price of the freight was 8.000 Norwegian Kroner (aprox. 45-50.000 bath), witch I consider cheap, and it only took five weeks :D

this is my only experience with this sort of transportation so I couldn't compare it to any other company, just my hazzlefree import of household goods.

good luck to you on your move

  18. seems like chaweng garden is the one to go for.

I am also planning to spend a few days in Koh tao

how and where is the cheapest way to get there?

and wat resort is recommended which is not too expensive and with some privacy?

basically I just want to spend some quiet moments with my girlfriend there.

My favourite place to stay while on Koh Tao is the Sunset Buri Resort, it has 100% privacy and electricity 24/7

    Check link here

To get to Koh Tao, I would recomend the speed boat sevice, it might not be the cheapest way to get there, but the fastest. Most of the boat operators are based on Big Buddha beach, which also has the main pier for Koh Phangan, but travel agents in Chaweng can also arrange tickets and pick ups.

  19. No worse than any other place in thailand

What statistics are you basing that comment on ?

Most of the folks I know that live in Pattaya have been burgled at least once.

A highly suspect conclusion from the "my cat has 4 legs therefore it's a dog" school of thought.

I would suspect any rise in crime, if that actually IS the case and not merely a perseption is a result of increased population - more people more crime...

I'd suspect it's due to the larger proportion of criminals per head than any other place in Thailand. Lets face it Pattaya is a magnet for low lifes. Those expatriates who've come to Pattaya from abroad may think the place is normal, but for someone who lives in another part of Thailand it's like a different country.

As I've said before Pattaya does Thailand one service, by attracting large numbers of gangsters it keeps the crime rate down for the rest of us.

I've been living in Pattaya for some time now, The only burglery I've experienced was my mother in law visiting for two months, and when she went home to her house (in a moban i Surin), she had been burglered. she didn't make a police repport though, witch I think is custumury (spelling). Farangs, on the other hand, seems to repport everything, due to insurence and so on. So saying crimes only happens in pattaya is redicilous, and shows that the OP doesn't live in LOS or has been very unlucky when picking his friends. BTW. I have lots of farang friends in LOS and it isn't even a theme of discussion.

    PS!

my friends all has wives and families, and don't staggering around in the sois between sai nung and sai song in the early morning hours.

    just my 2satang

  20. I've just bought my first car in LOS today, I opted for the Izusu SLX Spacecab Dragon eyes It's a 2000 model and I payed 360 big ones for it, including one year 1. class insurance, was i Suckered, or is this a good price for a car that has traveled 70.000 KM.

    PS!

the car looks new, no bumps, no prior accident and it handles very well (acordig to my brother in law, who is an auto mechanic)

    any takers?

    Morty :o

  21. I'm using 1.2 call with GPRS and it works like a charm, hook up your phone to the comp. and set the dialing properties. No username and no password, the dial in number is *99# you might need to activate the GPRS service, witch you will have in your phone book on the 1 2 call card, but i think that's for autoconf. thats what I did

    good luck
