  1. I saw on television the perfect job that offers one month UK and one month Thailand including free flight tickets. You only have to carry some extra packages that you are not allowed to open. Some lucky guys even manage to make 4 trips before they lose the job but they got a free stay in Thailand for many years as a bonus.

If you are good in second hand car trading you could try an export business of second hand cars from UK, Japan or Singapore to Thailand. Although I think the required paperwork will drive you crazy.

  2. Inkjet inkt becomes quite expensive if printing larger volumes. Also if the paper gets wet your brochure will turn in an unreadable aquarelle. Easiest is to go to a printshop and let them make the brochures for you. They can also fold and stample for you.

If you insist to use your own printer get a color laserprinter. something like "HP Laserjet Pro 200 Color MFP M276nw" will be in your price range.

  3. Not discussing the reward in front results in uncomfortable situations. If you pay cheaply the family will blame your GF and she will blame you. If you pay far too much the family will not respect you that much anymore, thinking you are a fool. But they will do think this probably already, so the best is to keep your gf happy.

Try to get an estimate of the work hours, the cost of materials used if he provided them. Easiest is to give your gf money to pay her brother and tell her she can spend the left over money the way she likes it. I would give something like 800 baht a day + materials costs to her. If she gives it all to her brother it is up to her. Just make it clear you feel uncomfortable that she is not helping you with this and for the next job you probably will hire an outsider.

  4. With a triple entry tourist visa and extensions you can stay 3 x 90 days with 2 trips outside Thailand. If you are older as 50 you can apply for a retirement visa. A very expensive alternative is the Thai elite card. However, this one gives you a few free limo transfers from and to the airport ;).

Maybe the easiest is starting a new business.

  5. Banks generally give a mortgage till 80%, so you need to have 20% savings already. Contractors are considered a higher risk so the bank probably lowers the maximum mortgage till 60%. No idea how the banks in Thailand estimate the value of the property. In the Netherlands there are certified appraisers and the banks accept the value they estimate.

Probably a mortgage will only be for a Thai. Foreigners can be accepted as guarantees.

Banks want a profit with minimal risks so you have to convince them the risk is minimal. Mostly they only accept you if they know they can claim your property if you do not pay them anymore and selling the property will cover the loan with a very large margin.

  6. You have a lots of option to choose from. I picked 4 for you that make the most sense.

    - Live with it.

    - Pay on the 26th by bank transfer and you will never have to see the landlord.

    - Move to another place with a different landlord. Maybe request a talk first to check if this landlord is polite.

    - Buy your own place.

As owner I would be happy with this landlord. This one takes care that the rent keeps getting paid.

  7. If you are familiar with rpm and yum, Centos would be a reasonable choice for the office. Else Ubuntu or Mint. Linux distributions with a small user base are a bit risky with long term usage.

Auto update of packages is not advisable because this can break things at the moment no one with Linux knowledge is around. However running an update once a while (every 2 or 3 months) is advisable if the systems are connected to an external network.

Libre office works fine but Microsoft Office is still easier to use. You can create .doc, .docx, .xsl files with libre office but the layout can be different while reading them with Microsoft office. Something to consider if you create documents/contracts and email them to customers. Solution is to email only pdf files.

Installing and configuring Linux will require more work compared with Windows. You probably have to customize the initial desktop environment, setup network shares (maybe automounter with nfs) and define printers.

I wonder if you can justify moving to Linux with a real business case. My justification to use Linux at home is, I like it :)

  8. According the specifications the 50pn4500 has 2 hdmi ports, one on the side and one on the rear. I guess you were using the one the side. However, the component input is also at the rear so as you have to access the rear anyway you use as well the hdmi input there.

  9. If you keep a windows XP system connected to the internet your PC will be part of a botnet sooner or later. The risk of a direct attack is reasonable small because most internet connections do not allow or support computers on the internet to initiate a connection to your pc, so an attacker has to wait until you connect to him instead. However, this is more easily done as most people realize. Just sending an email with some script code or link can be sufficient, or placing malicious scripts on a advertisement website that a lot of other web sites refer to.

Even if your XP box is not connected to the internet it will not be entirely save if you use usb sticks or maybe even floppy discs to move data around.

  10. I am thinking about retiring in the area around CM in about 10 years. My Thai wife likes CM also. So I check the CM real estate websites once a while to get an impression of the real estate market. I guess some are more professional as others. In general the prices are high. With an estimated building cost of 20,000 baht a m^2 and 2 million for 1 rai land a nice new house will cost me about 4 million but the second hand prices are always more.

  11. 150,000 baht for an Iphone 6? Buying a ticket and fly to the US to buy one is cheaper.

I would not put the phone in my luggage to tempt the guys at the x-ray scanner. But I also do not care about the unopened status and just would open it, put a sim card in it and pretend it was my second phone. If you want the box you can buy an empty one at Pantip plaza I am sure. Or put the empty box without charger in your luggage so it won't show up at the x-ray.

  12. You are a tourist and stay about 1 month? How much do you spend a week? An ATM will give 15,000 or 20,000 max. With 4 withdraws it will cost you 720 baht. Hardly worthwhile to spend the time to open a bank account. If you can afford to spend more a month even more reason not to spend time to do boring things to save a 180 baht.

Just carry about 20,000 baht in Australian notes for the first days and exchange those in the city, not at the airport! You can take more cash with you of course, but I personally don't like the risk to get pick pocketed or robbed and loose it all to save 180 baht ATM costs.

BTW the bank transfer fees for wiring money from Australia to Thailand will exceed the ATM withdraw costs.

  13. Check how much power you can drain from the wall sockets in your apartment. During cooking you may be using a rice cooker, microwave and induction plate at the same time.

Easiest check for pan that can be used for an induction plate is taking a magnet with you. If it sticks firmly to a pan, that pan works efficient on induction. Ikea 365 series works well.

Frying works very well but if you like to wok this does not work well on a flat induction plate. However, there exists special wok induction plates that are not flat and come with a matching wok pan

  14. It will not save you money. The most economical is:

You own a house and you do not plan to move next 10 or more years.

You are allowed a grid tied system.

If meter run back is possible take a capacity that matches your monthly average use.

If meter run back is not possible you can take a smaller system that closely covers your day time power usage.

In the Netherlands a system that delivers 3200kWh a year covering 22 m2 roof (35 degrees angle) costs about 200,000 baht (excl. installation).

The same system will produce more in Thailand and will be a bit cheaper, probably 200,000 with installation costs.

Still it will take about 15 years to reach the break even point if the meter can not be run back during the day.

  15. no tax on the money transfer. You are probably aware you will pay a transfer fee at the outbound and at the inbound bank. A small percentage of the transferred sum. Most banks use a minimum and maximum amount for the fee.

Sending foreign valuta to Thailand tend to be cheaper as sending Baht. If you do not know what gives you the most Baht just make 2 test transfers first, one sending Pounds and one sending Bahts. Also wise to do if you never did transfer money to the same account before. You want to be sure it gets to the right account.

Transfers above a certain amount will have extra checks at both banks for actions like money laundering.
