    so its inferred

Unless you read the original story, when it first came out around 6 months ago .....It is a BMA proposal ...BANGKOK Metropolitan Authority, and the plan was to add it onto the MEA electricity bill. So no, it is planned for Bangkok only. And unless you are illegally stealing electricity you won't be able to get out of paying it.

    from TV last year :

  2. ^  I think most of the Big C and Tesco malls have a 3BB desk but neither of the ones near me in On Nut could speak English well enough to explain things to a techno-luddite like me ( and my Thai is nowhere near good enough for anything vaguely technical) so I went into Centralworld , they have a desk there where one of the girls speaks perfect "American" and explained the various options available !

Of course, a few months later they started dropping their prices but I have to wait until my 12 month contract finishes soon

Goes without saying that you need to be sure your building has fibre for 3BB.

    I've got 3BB adsl (not fibre) 20mb / 1mb   and have been paying 1600 a month since Sept 2012.

The 3BB service is great but we haven't got fibre in this building yet (I'm in Bangkok).

I'd suggest you go and talk to 3BB, their prices have come down a LONG way since then. Currently offering 30/5 for 590 baht !

You can only use airport immigration for a re-entry permit if leaving on an international flight. Probably, getting the re-entry permit at CW is the best option, though you might be able to do it in Chiang Rai.

    That's what I thought ....

I 'm going to be in Chiang Rai over the weekend though, so that's not an option either.

I was just looking at the immigration website, and I noticed this:

    Quote

You could apply a re-entry permit at every checkpoint.

I'm loathe to take that literally though ! So it's out to CW.....

The office which deals with reentry permits and overstays is directly in front of you once you've gone through passport control at Don Mueang.

Once you've entered the office the desk you need is immediately on your right.

    Clearer?

What if I am flying domestic to Chiang Rai, then leaving overland ? I obviously will not be going through passport control at Don Mueang. Will I have to trudge out to Chaeng Wattana ?

Be careful for December as you could face the haze. It can be very bad, grounding aircraft and cause breathing problems.

The smoke haze should be well gone by then ! last year was the worst, and air there  was fine by early november

The original plan has Rail connection to Bang Su. Failure in land appropriation was the problem. The completion of the Purple Line was under Prayut watch and he should have the smart to ensure land was available and the connecting rail constructed. He has all the power that no previous governments have. Maybe he was in too much of a hurry to finish the project to impress the public.

From what I have read, the original plan was to have an extension of the Blue line, but the government of a certain former police officer/telecom mogul changed the plans completely so that it became a separate line, unconnected to the rest of the network. "Failure in land appropriation was the problem" ? Maybe, but they should still have had the common sense to overcome the problems and connect the systems!

So please explain how Prayut is to blame when he came into power years after construction was largely completed ? Was he supposed to tear down much of the track and start anew ?

  8. Our illustrious General has got a " thing" about trains.

When he successfully bankrupts this great country with train(s) infrastructure which only the top 15% of his people are going to be able to afford to ride, he may as well stay in power & reap what he has sown as no other political party will wish to be saddled with these massive costs'

    SRT in reverse

Well this train (and other extensions under construction) was planned long before he came into power, but at least he is trying to make sure the money was well spent in this case, with an actual connection ....after the govt of a former police colonel changed the original route so that the two lines did not meet !
  9. There is another story on this in "the media source we are not allowed to link to" where one of the vendors admitted she paid no rent, just 300 baht/month cleaning fee. With almost zero overheads it is no wonder they want to stay on the footpath ! The rent quoted for the new market building is just over half of what vendors at my local night market pay, so I have no sympathy for the flower sellers this time considering the amount of business they do.

  10. freeing up the pavements so the elderly, the disabled and those with young children are able get around the city is a positive step. freeing up the pavements so people dont have to walk along the second most dangerous roads in the world just to get from A to B is a positive step.

markets exist and vendors can prosper without being an inconvenience and detrimental to the population as a whole, it works in other cities all over the world and there's no reason why it cant work here.

It is not that the market is being completely closed, just that they have to move off the footpath. Apparently the market vendors used to be in a nearby building, but when that became too derelict (even for Thailand) the vendors moved out on to the streets, many years ago.

The building has finally been renovated, but the vendors don't want to move in there because they will have to pay rent. They would rather stay on the footpath, rent free, instead of paying a few thousand baht/month rent like most businesses would do. Sound familiar ?

  11. Ship hardly slammed into the walkway - more of a controlled low speed collision.

Perhaps the result of an input error into an electronic navigation and steering system with no one monitoring the ship's progress.

In any case - human error.

This accident does bring into question the safety of Prayut's proposed riverfront promenade on an active shipping riverfront.

That is further upriver, no freighters there !

  12. @thaipara

Do you have experience of teaching Hotel management undergraduates?

Do you have anything constructive to contribute?

Do you have any formal teaching experience?

Any experience of course design, implementation or student assessment?

    Perhaps you could enlighten us.

So what are your correct answers ?

    Husband. Wife. Son. Nephew.

    Half the class chose correctly.

Wife is the only female, nephew is not immediate family ....2 obvious choices out of 4 so a 50% correct is about right ratio.

    1. 2. 3. 5.

2 is the only even number, 5 is out of sequence(1,2,3,4)....again 2 obvious "right" answers which could also be wrong.

    5, 10, 50, and 100

5 is the only odd number, 100 is the only number that cannot be a multiple or divisor of the other 2 (5*10=50, 50/5=10, but 100 does not fit into any possible equation). Once again, 2 possible right answers.

A poorly designed test paper in my opinion....and yes I do have experience.

  13. It will be more convenient and cheaper for transportation. Fares will be B3 per kilometre, and about B150 from Phuket International Airport to Phuket Town, he said.

From the airport to town for around B150 is a reasonable price"

So it will go from the airport to town ? And how much will it then be from Phuket town to the beaches where most tourists will be staying ? It will be cheaper to go direct from the airport, even with taxi mafia prices !

  14. Tesco (and other supermarkets) in the UK sell reusable bags and give you extra points on your loyalty card if you use an old bag or a reusable one (usually cotton mix). Tesco in Thailand started selling multi-use bags (strong plastic ones, not quite the same) but my local store no longer has them on display. As I've never seen a local Thai using these bags I guess they weren't selling.

To say that the extensive use of plastic bags is part of Thai culture is really not true. Plastic only appeared post WW2 and plastic bags only really appeared when supermarkets mushroomed in every city, town and village, say from the early 60s onwards( Thailand would have been much later ). So before plastic bags flooded the market, what did Thai shoppers actually use ? As the PM wants to return to Thai traditional values, why not use this as a starter !!!!!!!

My local Tesco still sells them ,but the checkout staff don't know what to do with them !

I tried using cloth bags when I first moved here, as I did in Aus., but the girls just put my stuff in plastic bags first and then into the cloth bags !

  15. OP, another option that a friend used was to open a foreign currency account with his Thai Bank and then transfer the money into that (he used AU$). When ready to purchase you transfer the money from your foreign currency account into your Thai Baht account and get the FETC then.

You may have to send the money in sterling or US dollars though, which might mean more costs ?

  16. There seems to now be a requirement for "proof" of address.

This requirement will gradually be adopted by all offices and requires the use of a fully completed TM30 form with attached tabian ban and ID

Has anyone actually personally encountered that, as yet, in dealing with BKK CW for a retirement extension renewal??? I don't recall reading any reports here coming out of BKK CW about that being enforced there.

MANY MANY folks are going to BKK CW every day for retirement extensions... So, is there any link/links here to member reports of having encountered that requirement at Chaeng Wattana?

So a full day has now passed since my post above here, and not a single person has popped up here to say that they've been required to provide proof of address for a retirement extension renewal at BKK Chaeng Wattana Immigration.

Thus, unless evidence surfaces to the contrary, I'm going to assume that CW Immigration isn't doing this, at least at the present time.

My recent experience that I posted before was at C.W., the officer certainly did not want my rental lease or anything else, just confirmed the address listed on her computer. As Cw is virtually the "head office" I would assume that their procedures are correct, and all the other offices are making things up as they go along.

  17. If yo live in a "hotel" the "hotel" is obliged by law to notify immigration of your presence.

    Nothing "new" smile.png

Those on extensions of stay have always been required to evidence where they are staying.

Enforcement of the law clearly causes "concern" for some !

Those on extensions of stay have always been required to evidence where they are staying.

That is just not correct. I have NEVER had to give PROOF of residence before for retirement extension.

    Well good for you !

Now get used to providing "PROOF" of where you stay ! smile.png

Well on Friday last week I did not have to provide any proof for my retirement extension. Had rental lease/utility bills but officer was not interested. She typed my passport number into the computer, asked if I was still living at ****** address but no proof required.

  18. ^ Prior to the opening of the Suez Canal most ships bound from Britain to Australia would pass through those waters, so there probably are hundreds of wrecks in that region. However, most of those wrecks will be about 150 years old & will be considerably degraded!

Plus all the ships heading for the "Dutch East Indies" that used the trade winds to head west after rounding South Africa before turning north towards modern day Indonesia. Many of them misjudged their location and when to turn north and were wrecked on the West Aus coast, such as the Batavia. No doubt many more were lost in storms mid ocean.

  19. Finally a truly common sense proposal. Dearly hope is succeeds even marginally. Past Governments and present should have been subsidizing helmets for the benefit of the population, instead of rice schemes, or rubber farm getting free money.

Yes, give out free helmets and make it plain that anybody not wearing them WILL get fined. No doubt the govt would get half the cost back before Thais actually realised they were serious though.

  20. Jeez, talk about exaggeration. I was on Phi Phi at the time, it was about 5 or 6 small wooden buildings that burnt down, and it was nowhere near the Viewpoint path either. But it was "lucky" that it happened where it did ...no fire hydrants in the centre of town, only a few low pressure taps.

  21. <script type='text/javascript'>window.mod_pagespeed_start = Number(new Date());</script>

Does the 800k need to be in the bank or can you have it in your Thai cooperative saving bank at work.. Credit union?

You will need to explain that as I have never heard of a legal "Credit Union" existing within Thailand.

Perhaps you could name these "Credit Unions" ?

Well for a start there is the Khlong Chan Credit Union, but as that is the one involved in the Wat Dhammakaya scandal you probably would not want to have your money with them. But yes, there are credit unions in Thailand, not really aimed at farang customers though.

  22. I recently flew to Mandalay, then ferry to Bagan, then flew to yangon and back to BKK. most dangerous part of flying would have been the risk of putting my foot right thru the rusty floor of the airport bus at Mandalay ...you could see thru the steps !

Mandalay is a good base for some local tours, but the town is pretty noisy and dirty. Bagan is incredible, I did a balloon flight over the temples which was great.

Don't get a bus or train for long trips, they are slow and uncomfortable.
