  1. I see the amateur detectives are at it again. Even in a clear cut case of suicide there's always a farang on ThaiVisa that knows better than the police, emergency services, etc.

Aren't you people ashamed of yourselves? Do you have any idea how people Google their loved ones, when they lose them, to come here and find this conspiracy theorist crap? Give it a rest already. Unless you were present at the scene and witnessed something - you have nothing to add; get a life and stop playing with other people's already.

  2. I'm not sure how you end up giving someone 800 Baht because they have no change. 1,000 Baht maybe, 500 Baht maybe, even 400 Baht (all of which are possible combinations of Thai notes which no change would be forthcoming from). 800 Baht? That's umm 500 and 3 x 100s. You could have kept 300 Baht from that.

Same in USD. $10 = 350 Baht, $20 = 700 Baht. It would be impossible to pay 800 Baht unless you were trying to overpay.

Expecting a private taxi plus tuk-tuk for 350 Baht from the border to Siem Reap? That's also ridiculously naive.

  3. We will let you know when the city remodels itself to meet your walking requirements. We'll also let you know when landlords in Chiang Mai suddenly lose their sanity and decide to let apartments without requiring a deposit - though you might try AirBnB for that.

  4. ....I question whether a baby's head can smash a side-window...

That's because you can't do basic maths. You'd have no problem with the idea that I could throw a bowling bool through a car window would you? Even an 8lb one. Yet, the acceleration of that bowling bool (which is lighter than the baby) would be far lower than that of an infant thrown out of seat when the car goes from 70 mph to 0 mph in an instant.

Not everything is a conspiracy and it's ugly to suggest otherwise in the face of a tragedy like this. Stop pontificating from your armchair until you learn some simple physics and how to use a calculator.

    Useful formulae and theory:

    Force = mass x acceleration

    Pressure = force/area

Every action has an equal and opposite reaction,.

    Wow, a junior Einstein.

Forget all about your "formulae & theory & bowling bools". Automotive glass is designed to prevent breakage from body impact. Try punching or kicking a window as hard as you can .... it won't break. Special tools have been developed for the task. Some vehicles now come with said tool as standard equipment. It's the point of the tool, or a substitute, that breaks the glass on impact.

The tool is a cheap investment. Yes, I carry one in the door pocket of my car.

An 8 month old baby's head, skull, is still relatively soft. Skull can take up to a couple of years to harden. So, baby's skull way too soft to break glass.

SOTIRIOS was only questioning whether a baby's head could break the glass, he wasn't actually disputing the allegation. Have another read of your post, it's harsh at least & totally inaccurate at best.

I suggest you go & play with your bowling bool.

    Cheers..... Mal.

Garbage. You know why they make you wear seatbelts? Because when people hit windscreens - they go through them. Did you get your education in a 7-11 sale?

This site has some incredibly sick people. Announce a tragedy and immediately dispute a reasonable version of events. You could join SOTIROS back in school - a double typo notwithstanding is better than being a shameful loser with an unending downer on Thailand and anything you hear.

  6. The reason for the infrequency of "Sales" in Western markets is consumer protection law. Retailers are required to prove that they (for a set period of time) once sold the item for more money than they are asking for now. No such law exists in developing Asian markets; so "Sales" are on all the time. Of course, they don't usually represent good value for money. Discounting and clearing shelves to make room for new stock seems to be near unheard of in Asia. It seems that many places would rather throw away stuff than take a little less money for it. But then that wasn't atypical in the West during my youth so I guess they'll catch up eventually.

  7. It depends on which way the wind is blowing as to whether you can rent a scooter in Siem Reap; sometimes it's OK and sometimes it's strictly enforced that you cannot. The best place to ask where to rent one from is an expat bar such as Charlie's or Picasso's - you'll also get the information you need to decide whether it's worth the hassle.

The police only hassle you for breaking the law on Cambodia's roads. Fines are, however, pitiful and they last all day (so if you get a $5 fine for not wearing a helmet; you get a free pass until midnight to keep doing so) most other fines are much less. Traffic coppers are generally friendly and not looking to ruin your day; they will even let you drive off and visit an ATM to pay the fine (by yourself - but do go back and pay; it's a bad idea to upset police anywhere in the developing world).

  8. If I'd been sure it was an MP (of any other nationality than Thai) they'd have received a discourteous finger in return for their demands. Of course American military don't have authority on civilian activities in public spaces in Chiang Mai. They do, however, profit from the highly illegal egg-price-fixing-mafia. So maybe he was just following you to find out your source of cheap eggs so they can make sure you pay market rate in future?

  9. The murder rate by country is easy to establish. Thailand is not a particularly murderous nation. More murders per 100,000 occur in the United States, Fiji, Cuba, North Korea and many other nations. Thailand finds its murder rate lagging behind that of 110 other countries on earth.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_intentional_homicide_rate

This whole "Buddhists" don't kill is pure red herring. Christianity is a religion of peace? Sure, and that explains how the Christian United States invaded Iraq and Afghanistan and slaughtered 100's of thousands (you don't see Thailand doing something like that). But atheism is peaceful right? Well more than half of the people in the UK don't believe in a god and you can see how that worked for the Iraqi and Afghan people too.

When you attribute murder to being a Thai trait - you are being racist. It's really that simple; no matter what rubbish you hide it behind. It's a human trait. 3.9 people in every 100,000 are murdered in Thailand each year. 4.9 people in the United States are murdered each year. They both lag somewhat behind Honduras's amazing figure of 84 per 100,000.

  10. Life, I'm wondering if any of the posters here have been to Vientiane in the last 2-3 years. They no longer give the slightest monkey's about taking a Lao girl to your room. Nearly every hotel and guesthouse is "girl friendly". The Chinese came to town with megabucks and all the morality was chucked out the window. Don't spend so much as a second worrying about it.

  11. The easiest way to fix a Mac is the following steps:

    1. Place Mac in a black plastic bin liner

    2. Add 2 bricks gently to the contents of the bin liner then securely tie the bin liner shut

    3. Take bin liner to canal and chuck the thing in the canal

    4. Then go and buy a PC

  12. Are some of the members of this hallowed forum proposing that they should starve to death because they are unemployable?

I was under the impression any temple in Thailand will feed anyone that asks and give them a place to sleep.

    Am I wrong?

Is that not the way the temples here work?

I am not sure which bit of "mental health problems" you don't understand but many of those with mental health issues can't turn up in the same place every day and many more don't understand what they're meant to do. Attempts to justify the mistreatment of people are in very poor taste.

  13. One can't see if one doesn't want to see!

    or

if they have buried their head in the sand looking for distractions more pleasant!

At least in Cambodia, the Buddhist monks shared their morning's collections with the poor people.

I don't see that happening here.

I do see a lot of overweight monks of all ages though!

Being fat is no longer a sign of wealth or prosperity; take a walk through any poor neighborhood in the US or the UK - you'll find nothing but fat people. It's a sign of lousy diet built on cheap, crappy, high fat, high sugar but low nutrition content food.

Who asked you to judge the Buddhist monks of this country? They area fundamental part of life here and there are definitely many temples and monasteries around the country doing great work with the poor (and in a low key manner so that the beneficiaries may retain face).

  14. I think the OP is having an eggsistential crisis. He should omelette go before it scrambles or fries his brain. Look at the sunny-side~up to you.

From my eggsperience these things can be benidicting.

Yes, I understand what you are saying.

I don't plan to become obsessed with eggs, any time soon.

However, I did think that the percentage price rise was very high.

Thank goodness I was able to confirm that my egg lady is just charging the growing rate...

I am still not sure what has caused the sudden price hike...

And I don't care about the amount.

I just want to pay a fair price, whatever that might be.

I do enjoy shopping for eggs in the traditional market, because they provide so much detailed size information. I have never seen that before in Philly.

Remember, Rocky Balboa ate tons of raw eggs, before he visited the Philadelphia Art Museum.

However, he was never particularly interested in the size of each egg.

    So, Thailand is better.

I don't plan to become obsessed with eggs, any time soon.

Huh? you dont see that 15 posts and photos on eggs alone sure does indicate obsession?

    You said in earlier post;

The largest size was selling for 43 Bt, until the beginning of May,and was stable over a 10 month h period.

Now, the same size at the same store sells for 45Bt. That is over a 20 percent price rise

Curious as to how do you figure out over a 20% increase here?

Yes, that is a very good question.

I think I may be trying to juggle two many different egg prices in my head, without taking notes.

    One thing is certain.

On April 25th, my egg lady was selling eggs for 4Bt.

Now, the same eggs at her shop cost 5 Bt.

So, that seems to be a 25 percent price rise.

However, in the case of the small market which I photographed...

The size 0 eggs cost 4.3 Bt per piece on April 25th.

Now these same eggs cost 4.5 Bt per piece.

So, as you say, that is only a 4.7 percent price increase.

I guess my mathematical oversight in my previous post was just due to wishful thinking, and that I hoped I could continue to be in in a good mood while buying eggs from my egg lady.

Now, since you point out this discrepancy, I guess I will not be able to shop with her.

Instead, I will just walk the 3 kilometers to the place I used to buy eggs, and then walk back.

Eggs are quite heavy if you buy one tray, 30 eggs.

I don't know how much they weigh, but a lot if you must carry them in a plastic bag for a 3 kilometer return trip.

I'm going to be honest; I wouldn't walk 6 km to save 30 Baht. I wouldn't walk 6 km to save my life if I'm honest but I do find your bizarre posts very entertaining. Please continue to regale us with your adventures; you add a certain charisma to this board that it all too often lacks.

  15. Well said Chiengmaijoe; it's also worth noting that those with mental health issues cannot be diagnosed by counting their limbs. There's no safety net for those folks to fall back on and in many cases mental health issues are far more problematic to the people who would normally care for (or even employ) someone than physical disabilities are.

Give if you want to give, don't give if you don't but don't sneer at those in need and don't sneer at those who choose to help.
